View Full Version : can someone get me started with target turrets?

I'm a bonehead newb with target turrets, & MOA's, etc. Up until now I hunt with a 300 yard zero, so I just usually aim low or hold over if necessary. However I just bought a used 3.5-10 x 40 Vari-X III with target turrets. This will be mounted on a 20" 5.56/223 AR. This is for informal shooting-coyote hunting.

No paperwork with the scope and surprisingly I'm not finding alot of info on the interwebz. I know how to zero and how to zero out the knobs but my confusion starts with dialing in for distances and I have stupid questions such as do you pick a load and punch it into a ballistics calculator to get a rough starting point on ballistics and then confirm?

I'll zero at 100 yards (correct?).

If some kind soul wouldn't mind emailing me directly to answer questions so I'm not advertising my ignorance to the whole world, that would be great. Or you could point me to a web tutorial, that would work too.

I'm just getting started here, haven't even mounted the scope yet.

1 MOA = 1" at 100 yards, 1MOA = 2" at 200 yards and so on...... What are the the turrets rated per click ? 1/4 MOA per click or 1/8 MOA per click ? Adjust elevation accordingly after zeroing at the range you want, and zeroing out the turrets.

Yes you are on the right track. You first need load data and ballistics on your round then you can dial from there. Or if you know, say, you are zeroed at 100 and your bullet drops x inches at x yardage then you can dial from there.

Do a google search for, like, how do turret scopes work or something and you will get some good ideas.

You out will need ballistics on your ammo and some more info on your scope to move forward though

Been working with another forum member, my scope is 1/4 clicks. I think I get it now. Drop divided by distance = come up, not just drop at a specific distance = come up, that's where I was confused. Yeah I'm kind of a math dumbass.
I like the JBM ballistics site and will start there, try and make a simple card for some cheap 55gr .223 and burn some up and see if I'm even close and understand the concept.

1 MOA is not 1 inch. MOA= Minute of Angle. If it was an inch scope it would have something like 1/4 IPHY ( inch per hundred yards).

1 MOA equals 1.047 inches at 100 yards.

if you have a smart phone, Shooter or Strelok apps can help you with the ballistic card.

Sure, and you would need to be shooting at over 1000 yards for that .047 to equal a 1/2 inch difference in POI.......[Tooth]

Not even quite a half inch at 1000 yds.

You show me the rifle and ammo combo that can keep that 1/20th MOA and then I'll care about that 0.047. Let alone a shooter that can.

Purchase the book applied balistics. Good info in it and comes with balistic software
