Wife has a few boxes of college textbooks about 10 years old in the basement and it's time for them to go. Hate to throw them in the trash, they're in great shape, used once.
Anyone know a book store that accepts this kind of stuff? I've never donated books before.

Donate to reading and education programs, or even to Good Will or Salvation Army. Never dispose of or destroy books. There is always knowledge or entertainment within them.

I doubt a bookstore is going to want out of date textbooks. Can always put them up for free on craigslist

Some textbooks never go out of date. Physics 101 and calculus 101 haven't changed in centuries, whereas some medical textbooks have changed significantly in less than a decade. A 10 year old software programming textbook may as well get donated to a museum.

Libraries don't take books- if they do, they have to destroy them. I'd post them on Craiglist or if you have a local FB group in your neighborhood, there may be someone wiling to take them off your hands.

What sorts of subjects do they cover? I may be interested.

That's what I did with all my paperbacks last year.

Thrift stores or Friends of the Library groups may have a book sale that they collect for. Example: Aurora's Friends of the Library store is located at NW corner of Peoria and Iliff.

My wife knows of several libraries that take them. They have periodic book sales to raise money and sell the used books.

TheGray & Irving: Mostly general business mgt I believe. I'll take an inventory tonight and I'll report back here before I do anything.
Gman: If your better half could get me a list of those librarys that accept book donations for resale that would be great.

I just gave about 5 years of National Geographic to a library in Longmont.

A firm of lawyers, Equal Justice, is to write to Obama and the ambassadors of more than 200 countries in which “Top Gear” airs to ask them to consider the evidence, and then decide if the series should continue to be broadcast in their countries, the Guardian has reported.

You guys are right- I forgot about library book sales!
I know libraries won't accept books to go on the shelves, and some libraries have no room to store donated books. It's best to call and confirm first.

sometimes the public library won't admit to accepting them, so you gotta "baby in a basket" ditch them at their doorstep.

If you are still debating what to do, my Fiancee could probably take them as extra reference material. She's capped out at work until she goes for a degree and was planning accounting and/or biz mgmt.

Why not use them as a backstop to an impromptu firing range in your basement!?!?! [Beer]

Or, a tad more seriously, put them inside your walls for sound dampening and over-penetration mitigation purposes. ;) books are actually pretty good bullet stoppers.

NOT TRUE!!! At least not in my on-time experience!
Years ago, the boy was 7 and I bought him a Crickett .22 rifle, mounted a little scope on it for him, it was bad-ass and frankly I was more excited about it than I think he was. I had to zero that baby in the finished basement. Couldn't wait to take it to the range. Stacked a bunch of phone books and a target in front and fired. One and done, all the way through the phone books and into the wall. it was concrete behind the sheetrock but I was amazed it penetrated the phone books and it was LOUD in the basement too.
Seriously, I hear books are good in that regard, but it may take far more to stoup a round than you realize.

What kind of sissy phonebooks were you using?? I took a box that was approximately 8"x8"x16" and stuffed it with phonebooks and cardboard. The first 3 inches was phonebooks, the rest was just a bunch of layers of cardboard. I shot it with a 10/22 from 25 ft away 10 times and none of the 40gr .22LR bullets made it more than 10 inches. Maybe cardboard is more bullet resistant than we give it credit for? [Dunno]

Either way, if the books still have relevant knowledge or wisdom in them, shooting them is the last thing you should do.

I got rid of majority of acct/fnce books, but I do have lots of intro econ, if you are interested.
I still have all these old series books from 15yrs ago... :(

If I get a chance to get a free harrison's , I will post it up. Hope you are not talking about Merck books. lol

This was before half.com was popular with selling text books.
I buy a torn up used txt book for $70ish, and it was it's last year for that edition. Hate when they update the same textbook to refresh used text book market.

Just saw this. Thanks for the offer, but my major was Economics. I never did take an accounting class though.

It's been a while, but I sold back any still useable textbooks via Abebooks.com. Then there are the book recycling bins some schools use as a fundraiser. And finally, I've dropped more than a few boxes of magazines off at the local recycling center.
