View Full Version : May sound dumb, but have a serious question.
Okay, say you buy a Rossi Ranch Hand. How much longer can you make the butt stock before you run into a SBR situation? I have looked over all the regs I can find on NFA firearms and have not seen this addressed. Just curious.....and BTW, I didn't buy a Rossi Ranch Hand, just used that for an example. Thanks in advance.

It's sold and registered as a pistol. It is designed to be shot without shouldering the stock. If you decide to shoot it incorrectly, that does not make it a rifle.
A pistol is clarified as designed to be fired one handed.
I'd bet that you could put a stock on it as long as you wanted; but if you shape it to fit your shoulder, or install a recoil plate/pad you are making a SBR. For clarification just write your lovely BATF agent. They would be happy to send you a written clarification to eliminate all possibilities of breaking the law.
I know there are some pistols made with 18" barrels, so barrel length does not signify "pistol".. it is just the one handed design part.

Put a sig arm brace on it.

If your intent is to make a stock, and the ATF can show this intent, you could be looking a 10 years in the butt hurt hotel. Is this a risk you are willing to take?

If you want it as a sbr, do the paperwork and fee and wait!

Seriously.. Don't play with this. Do the paperwork, pay the ransom and wait the time out. It gets here quick and then you are able to actually enjoy your gun instead of worrying about it.
What they said and welcome from Lakewood.
I don't have one, and never intend to get one. This was a strictly a question like, when does a pebble become a rock. It would make a very interesting SBR, but again, was just curious as to how long the "pistol grip" portion, if you will, could be. I found the answer about as long as you want as long as you don't shape to fit your shoulder very interesting. Anyway, thanks for the answers so far. You guys have a great forum here!
