View Full Version : My employer is pissing me off.
I carry a cell phone just like everyone else, and I use it as my only phone. I work for an IT company and I'm required to be on-call after hours once a month. No direct contact with any of our customers as they have to call our NOC (Network Operations Center) If the NOC can not resolve the problem they call the on-call Engineer.
Here's the problem... not mine, my companies.
My voice mail for "my" phone is this.
"Hi, I'm not available at this time to answer my phone. Please leave your name, number and time you called and I will get back to you as soon as I can. If you would like to hear this message again in English, press 1. If you would like to learn English press 2. Thanks and have a great day."
Some how my voice mail message got back to the higher ups in my company who sent me an email asking me to change my voice mail as it's not appropriate.[Rant1]
This is my personal phone and NO customer will ever have my number and will never have the chance to listen to that voice mail.
What do you guys think? Should I change it? Should I tell my company to provide me a phone and I'll put what ever voice mail they want on it?
I think it's complete bull shit, but then again I do not want to lose my job in this market.

As a right to work state they can ask you to change something.
Do you have to... no
If the phone is not paid for in any way by the company... they can not make you change it.
You can loose your job...just like you can change your outgoing message.
If you want to twist, yet still comply...Go to the other extreme...
Make the outgoing message in french, russian, german, greek, hebrew...whatever.
Best yet if you have any anchestors that used a different language.
That way if they ask you to change it again you can claim ethnic racism.
Sorry, I like to push manager's buttons sometimes and see if their blood pressure rises and they turn red.... then I wait for their head to explode... but it never does.
Feel free to not take my advice.
Osprey... you just gave me an idea. My family is Scottish [Coffee]
I still have a number of relatives that live in Scotland. Their accent is so strong you can understand a damn thing they say unless you have been around it a lot. Now that could make a good voice mail message. [Beer]

I changed my generic message to spanish for a time and pissed everyone off. I wouldn't change it. I would ask for a work phone!
Depends on what you think. times are tough, finding a job etc. there are a lot of people out there who would enjoy having a job.
I personally think you should leave it, or make it worse because I don't think a company should tell me what to do, but on the other hand I like having a job and for something so small i wouldn't worry about it.
but your argument is pretty good. do others get a company phone? If so, bring it up and tell them your personal phone is just that and if they want you to have a work phone they can pay for it.
Of course you could just go all out and say what you really want to say on your voicemail. If you lose your job, don't worry, I will keep you afloat buying your ammo off you![Beer][Coffee]
Personal phone being used for work?
If they have an expectation that you are available via a cell phone, they should be paying for a cell phone. And the message on that phone should be professional and adhere to whatever standards they want.

I had a similar experience with my employer where I had a post on my myspace page. Our HR director had found it and decided it was inappropriate, given that I was a field supervisor at the time. Now mind you, personal opinion / content in no way directed at my employer or the agencies we work with, and it wasn't anything to even do with EMS. Yeah, I got made an example for the rest of the company to see and was demoted, given a final written warning and told to train my replacement supervisor or else get fired. I took the punishment. . . funny thing was that my replacement. . . yeah, she quit 2 wks later and went to another ambulance service. [ROFL1]
Ignore the email. If its really a problem for them, they'll come talk to you in person.
If they do, tell them (in a polite, appropriate way) that it's your phone, you pay the bill, and you'll set the voicemail greeting to anything you choose.
If they want you to be on call for work, and they want your voicemail greeting to conform to a script, then they should provide you with a phone.
Or just change your greeting to the "number you have dialed has been disconnected" recording.
Either way, if you get canned some bricks thru their windows should even things out.

+1.. they want to dictate your voicemail.. they should pay for it! Good luck to you. On the flip side, it sucks that the guys who have strong principal usually don't get ahead because we refuse to kiss asses!
Keep a log of these stuffs too - just in case things got out of hand. I know someone who was constantly harrassed for his personal blog and 'laid off' by a fortune 500 locally in Denver. Now he is living of 8k/month settlement for the next decade or so. :) His daily log which sometimes posted on his blog won his settlement.

Sounds like a good idea. The thing that gets me is this is my personal phone. They pay nothing towards the bill, even when I'm on-call.
I think I'll sit it out like Elhuero said and make them come talk to me.
Then when they do I'll speak in German. See how that works.
It's AMERICA Phuckers.... SPEAK ENGLISH or get the fuck out of my country! I fought for it. Ohh... and BTW. The Declaration and the Bill of Rights are in ENGLISH! [Beer]

I would tell them exactly where to stick their implied demand. It's your phone, you pay for it, and they have no basis for asking you to change anything. God, people just need to STFU and stop worrying about who might get offended by something.
personally, if I were in the management's shoes, I wouldn't even want a customer who would be upset by something so fucking stupid.

You should change it.
Not because your boss asked, but because its not even a little funny.
As far as legalities go, I'm no lawyer. Morally, though, no one owes you a job, and a boss has the right to set the terms of employment. This includes the right to unreasonable terms of employment. I know in Texas they can let you go with no reason given - but Co. is a "right to work" state (whatever that means, last I checked unemployment was not 0% here,) so the legalities here may vary. But an employer can certainly find a way to let you go if its just a little creative.
Personally, as well, I don't know what bothers people about others not speaking english. I don't even speak spanish (2nd gen american, dad was actually an illegal who got legal by marrying mom,) but, you know, land of the free and all that. In addition, people who refuse to learn english are so obviously shooting themselves in the foot that its kind of a self-defeating option. Having lived in both SoCal and all over Texas, its been a bit of pain, but again, its hardly something to get pissed about.
Now, the politics of a lot of immigrants bother me, but thats hardly an isolated issue. The politics of most high school graduates bother me just as much or more than the politics of most immigrants. At least (most) Mexicans can tell you exactly how the Era of Hope and Change will end, since they come from a place where they already tried that.

Pancho,
I fully respect your opinion, in fact I fought and bled for the right to speak your mind as has every member of my family here since the early 1700's.
That being said I would NEVER disrespect another Country or their heritage and history by speaking my native tongue when I want to make a living in that country.
Why should I be asked if I want some government documentation in English or Spanish? Do you know how much this Country spends in printing documentation in two languages when the "official" language in this country is English? I can understand printing multi-language documentation for certain things. Airport security, immigration, and those items which deal with other international business or governments.
NOT when I go take a drivers test, go to the doctors, or call my freaking phone company. When I talk to them about my phone bill and ask them to send me a paper copy of my bill and they ask me if I want it in English or Spanish pisses me off considering I was talking to them the whole fucking time in English.
I find it god damn disrespectful for ANYONE to come to the United States for employment or any other reason and out right refuse to learn our language and at the same time raise their countries flag in celebration.
If your country is so good... go back there and speak what ever the fuck you want.
Cheers [Beer]

Thanks for being polite, RRD. I suppose I just don't see it as disrespectful. America wasn't built on English; so I find it a lot more disrespectful when anyone (immigrant, legal or illegal, or native born) starts speaking fascism/socialism as if its a great new idea. That is way more offensive to me than someone talking in a different language.
Those guys should really ask a mexican how the era of hope and change will end, their country is a lot further along that road than we are now, though with Obama at the head we seem to be taking leaps and bounds to catch up.
Edit: I agree with you completely on the government docs thing being in English. But I also don't think its a problem if a private business wants to offer a courtesy to people who may not be familiar enough with written English to be comfortable getting bills, contracts, etc in it. Of course, if its forced (like it is with French in Canada) then its crap.

I've always wondered the same thing that Sixgun has asked. If what we have here in the United States is so much better than what these individuals have/had in Mexico, then why come here and refuse to adapt to the language, customs, environments of this nation? I don't understand the mentality of coming here just to convert area after area into the same thing that they left.
Yes, there are areas (predominantly along the East Coast) like your "Little Italy's" and "Chinatown's" that speak predominantly Italian, or Portugese, or Chinese, etc. These are small communities in specific area, not spread out all across the country like an infestation. Most all of the immigrants who came to the United States in the early 1900's or earlier learned to speak English and never spoke their native tongues outside of their homes. These people wanted to adapt to their new host nation. They also (almost all) also legally migrated to this country. As a whole, these individuals wanted to not take from this country, but give something back as a way of saying 'thank you" for the privledge of being here. These philosophies are not being brought here from the bulk of those coming to the U.S. from Mexico. I'm tired of the attitude of "If you don't like it tough! What are you going to do about it? Nothing; I'm here and you can't so a thing about it."
Once again, my $.02!

So your dad is part of the problem then.
Wal-mart denied them. They told them to learn english...even though they are catered too still with spanish speaking employees...
You aren't going to win any brownie points here. It is plain and simple, if they want to be here they need to learn english and the rest of us do not need to be inconvenienced with questions asking press 1 or 2 or having to drive through parts of the city and not understand the billboards or have special people hired at our places of work to cater to those who do not learn our language when they are in OUR FUCKING COUNTRY!!!!

back to the cell phone issue, claim it's broken and leave it at home for a few days while you work with the cell provider to get it replaced... if it's not documented somewhere that you're required to have a cell phone...
Worked for me when a company wasn't paying the going rate for mileage on personal car usage, left the car at home, rode the bus. sorry man, car is broken, got some wheels I can borrow? Ended up driving the owner of the company sports car around for a while... nice ride. then they finally got their act together and started paying more per mile. And turns out, they started providing a company/owner vehicle more often because of that.

Its because they stick to their roots and we took most of this land from them in the Mexican American war around 1848. They are still spread about here due to that...why they keep coming over I have no idea other than our money is worth way more than theirs, some come over seasonally, work for the summer etc..then go back and live off it and support their family the rest of the year.
why is there cinco de mayo....shouldn't happen here. why does the mexican flag get waved around on that day...why does it at time get hung above the american flag at schools (predominantly down south like socal) (yes just like the email we have all seen)
Why did the mexican flag get hung above the american flag in nevada and then a US veteran take it down and take it. (sure you have seen that one too)
they have no respect for us. they come here fuck us for the money, don't pay the taxes and send the money back.
Now I have to pay for uninsured motor vehicle insurance...guess the fuck why....you guessed it! the fucking illegals who don't carry insurance and the insurance companies were tired of paying for it, so they charge it to those who actually pay....WTF!!!!!

America wasn't built on English.
No? What historical studies have you read that identify anything else? I have studied this nations history extensively. While it's true that most of the original colonies spoke Spanish (Spain's version) and French, this changed very early on in the colonies.
All of this nations Founding Fathers spoke and wrote in English (albeit in the dialect of it's time).
All of this nations founding documents are in English. Case in Point:
The Mayflower Compact
The Declaration of Independence
The Constitution of the United States
The Constitution of Confederate States
The Federalist Papers
The Articles of Confederation
The Northwest Ordinance
The Missouri Compromise
The Monroe Doctorine
The Gettysburg Address
The Emancipation Proclamation
(I can provide dozens more if you're interested)
Help me to understand how "America was NOT build on English".

I have a deep feeling on this subject as I feel our Country is being taken away from us right under our noses. Between Obama and the liberals who find it necessary to give my rights, money, and freedom to those who do not know or respect this Country and what so many people have done to secure our Freedoms. Funny I used the word "secure" because that is not how I feel right now.
I have no problem with anyone coming to this Country who wants a better life. Not sure with the current administration that is possible.... [Tooth] But do so as those legally. I have a friend who is Korean and wanted to come to school here. The amount of work he had to go through just to get an education visa was a pain in the ass. Even more so when after being here 6 years he wanted to become a citizen. He did so with a lot of time, work, learning the language, history and the things that a lot of US citizens take for granted on a daily basis.
I didn't want this ti turn into a big fight or discussion on the right to speak a certain language, but that of being able to speak. In my case in which started this tread was that I felt like my company is telling me what i can and can not say on a device that I own.
I know this is a very touchy and deeply rooted subject but I think we should try and keep it civil and constructive [Beer].
Not trying to take away anyone's right to tell me to fuck off [ROFL1]

OMFG!! ROTFLMAO!!!!!! Dying over here....
I agree, my great grandparents were 100% Italian as well, and they came over here, legally, got shitty TAX PAYING jobs, building our nation's infrastructure, even went so far as to change their last name from Notariani, to Notter, in an effort to be AMERICANS.
My Grandmother has told me stories about her mother slapping the taste out of her mouth for speaking Italian in public, as it was considered Un-American, to speak anything but English outside the home.
They came here for a better life, a chance at freedom, and to escape the Black Hand, which we now know today as the Mafia. They wouldn't have traded America for Italy or Sicily for ANYTHING.
Don't misconstrue what I'm saying, I'm not anti immigrant, I'm anti ILLEGAL immigrant. If you go through the process of coming here under a visa, and go through the naturalization process (which BTW, is hell more stringent that what they teach in schools. I know some philipinos that know more about American history that most people), then you have my 110% support. You will be my friend. However, you jump my border illegally, I beleive we have every right to shoot on sight.

Help me to understand how "America was NOT build on English".
It was built on Chinese! Them built those railroads to expediate the englishization of the rest of the country! [Tooth]
You guys are paranoid. People that are unwilling to learn English do not have enough power to make all the changes the voices in your heads are telling you are happening. I believe our national language should be English. If you don't speak it get someone to translate government documents for you. I do not want to spend tax dollars on Spanish or any other language. I am not bothered when people speak other languages. If they don't speak English I will not be able to help them. That being said I will be very happy if my kids speak Spanish or any other language in addition to English. I wish I spoke more than one language.
On the cellphone subject I think your employer is being stupid. Stupid or not if my employees did something I did not want them to and it was not discriminatory I would fire them just because I can. I can always find another employee. In this market employees are easy to find. I don't personally believe what they are doing is wright but this is an at will state. You have the right to end the employment relationship at anytime and so do they without cause on either side.
back to the cell phone issue, claim it's broken and leave it at home for a few days while you work with the cell provider to get it replaced... if it's not documented somewhere that you're required to have a cell phone...
Sounds like a pretty good idea. I'm not really in fear of losing my job as they really can't afford to lose a single person.
Since we have somewhat migrated to the subject of immigration, I will say this. I don not blame those who will do what ever it takes to come here and try and start a better life. Look back at our own families history and you will find they did just that.
Who do I blame? The companies that hire those undocumented laborers. If they did not follow this illegal practice and were allowed to get away with it this would be a mute point.

However, you jump my border illegally, I beleive we have every right to shoot on sight.
precisely. I would like to see border jumping as a terrorist act and considered an invasion.

If you watch the video from this thread:
http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13076
it'll make you feel twice as strongly about your last statement. (The speaker talks about Islamic patriots [not supposed to call 'em terrorists] crossing the U.S. border via Mexico).
You have the right to end the employment relationship at anytime and so do they without cause on either side.
but the people who get elected take these people into consideration. especially obama because he knows he can get their votes if he promises them something...and don't tell me their votes dont count...that mother fucker is part of ACORN and you know they vote people more than once, people who are dead and they sure as shit let illegals come in and throw down a dem. vote.
lets say you ran a business such as landscaping or construction.
If I, the government imposed a $25,000 fine on you for employing any illegal immigrant, would you do it. Basically what this whole thread comes down to is Spanish speaking illegal immigrants who are unwilling to learn our language and fuck the country over. each and every single tax paying citizen and legal immigrant who pays taxes get fucked...especially the latter.

Enforcement is the key. I have a couple buddies in the ICE enforcement who are frustrated on the fact that with all of those illegal worker being arrested, there is almost ZERO prosecution on the employers side.
We focus on drug dealers and smuggle routes in the war on drugs.. yet, when it comes to illegal immigration, we turn a blind eye on the employers, smugglers, organized job agents, etc.
Now I have to pay for uninsured motor vehicle insurance...guess the fuck why....you guessed it! the fucking illegals who don't carry insurance and the insurance companies were tired of paying for it, so they charge it to those who actually pay....WTF!!!!!
You need to calm down. You're saying all kinds of stupid shit now.

I'll wear my INS hat!
It actually works when you go to renew your drivers license. dress in black cargo pants, a black T-shirt and a INS hat. see how fast you get to the front of the line.

They seem to be indifferent to the Border Patrol hats though.
