View Full Version : Powder sources?

Does anyone have a powder source they'd care to share? I've been searching for pistol powder for a few weeks now, and coming up completely dry. Looks like pistol powder might be the last shortage going. I can find 22lr ammo easier than this.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check them out. I just called The Reloading Zone up in Wheat ridge, they just got in some large size containers (lady on the phone said either 8 or 10 pounder) of 700x. I'm new to reloading, and don't really want 8 pounds to start with. I've also seen that 700x can be a little challenging to volume measure.

I don't mind paying a little more, will still be saving money over buying ammo, and I'll finally get to put all my new reloading equipment to use.

Calling around to all the shops I can find to find pistol powder reminds me of trying to find 9mm ammo last year.

It's getting better, but ya, still a PITA.

might be easier if you tell where you've looked so it's not suggested.

So far I've checked with Green Mountain Gun, and The Reloading Zone. Also stopped by Cabellas south store yesterday. I'm guessing they get it randomly and probably doesn't last long. I'll give Dads a call monday, since it doesn't look like they are open on the weekend.

My bullets won't be delivered until Tuesday, so wouldn't be able to do anything with it until then anyway. I just get impatient, with my reloading setup sitting there ready to go.

If your looking for a lb to try I do like Dad's because they have a good selection. Once you find what you want then wait and watch at powder valley and buy in bulk. In the last 10 years powder has gone from $80 to $140 for 8lbs. Kept in a cool place it is good for a long time.

I'll be loading 115 gr 9mm and 230 gr 45acp for now.

Here's the list of powders that I've been searching for (based on several reloading manuals and data sheets)

Accurate No. 5
Accurate No. 7
Alliant Bullseye
Alliant Unique
Hodgdon HS-6
IMR 700X
IMR 4756
IMR 7625
Winchester 231
Power Pistol

I'm open for any other powder suggestions as well. I've heard the 700x can be a little tricky using a volume measure like the Lee auto disk setup I've got. Thats stopping me from buying the 8 pounder of it from ReloadingZone.

Yep. Buy it cheap and stack it deep. I load AA7 for everything from 9mak to 45acp. Not the most popular but I like it.

PVI isn't taking backorders...at least not from us commoners [Coffee]

From their home page:

We are currently processing orders within 3 days of order placement.

You will receive an invoice when your order is processed
and receive tracking information when the order ships.

BACKORDERS: (Effective 01/29/13 at 8 AM ET)
Due to the overwhelming number of orders and the extreme supply shortages we are temporarily discontinuing our policy of accepting backorders. Orders that are placed for items listed as "Out of Stock" on the website will be immediately cancelled. All customers who have backorders in our system currently will not be affected and these orders will be processed as soon as the items become available. I picked up a pound of AA No5 at Reloading Zone, but paid way too much at $38. Saw it for only $28 at Sportsman's. If Dad's isn't as over priced as Reloading Zone, I'll go there as they are way closer. I see them all the time but have never been in there.

Little gun store down here called Bam Bam Firearms had quite a bit of powder. I bought 4 pounds of Auto Comp and 2 of H335 about a month ago. Give them a call and see what they have in stock. 719-406-1038

Was able to get 1 pound of accurate 5. From what I read, it's a very good powder, meters well, and is pretty clean burning. I'll be loading up my first few rounds tonight.

I love hp38 for 115 grain 9mm and title group for 147 9mm, and I'm always chasing the zero recoil with title group.

HP38 is on my list, haven't seen any of it so far, but will definitely grab it up if I ever see it.

Just about out of my 1 pound of AA5, liked it a lot, metered very well, and shot very clean for me. I didn't bench rest it, but I did shoot my handload rounds better than factory ammo. I think I loaded them a little lighter than factory, which I guess would help that. It's kind of cool seeing factory ammo for "decent" prices online, and thinking "no, I can handload for half that price".

I'm almost out of my pound of WSF, I use it for 9mm low recoil, steel smacking rounds. I've still got about 200 Extreme Bullets 147gr RN plated to go, so looking for some more WSF. I've got a LOT of 700X, (16lbs or so). I use it for shotshells, actually, but see that can be used for some handgun loads.
I'm in Ft. Collins, but am driving around the Front Range all week long. Any takers?

July 8th, stopped by Sportsman's in Loveland, Cheyenne, and RMSS today, almost no powder at all. 50BMG, must be great to be looking for that, it's everywhere!!! (Also, stopped by Sportsman's in Thornton late last week, no powder to speak of there either.)

Saw a butt-load of .22lr at Sportsman's in Cheyenne. Limited quantities per purchase, but 500 round boxes. Blazer .22lr 500rnd boxes, 28.99 or so for stuff I just paid 16.00 per box last week with a special supplier, so didn't get any. Appparently Tuesday is the day for .22 there. Don't know what the powder day is. It might be the same. The big-box stores have a "day", the smaller gunshops get stuff whenever it comes in.
Still looking for some replacement for the WSF I'm almost out of, but I just put up 500rnds of it, and have enough for the 100 or so bullets I have still, so not an emergency. BUT, y'all know how "plenty" becomes an emergency these days.
I still have some 700X or W231 to trade for WSF in Ft. Collins.

I have yet to see any pistol powders in a store. I see it pop up occasionally online but many times it seems like you can only order 1 or 2, so the shipping/hazmat charge makes it crazy expensive.

Will be finishing up my bottle of titegroup soon, will definitely be looking for more of it. Have 4 pounds of CFE pistol that I got online that I haven't opened yet.

I just scored on H-322 and Reloader 22 this morning. Picked up three pounds of each and they hand plenty more. They also had trail boss, CFE and scores of other powders. The down side is they are in Minot North Dakota.

Haha I'm in Minot myself right now and I'm pretty sure I was in the same shop looking for Retumbo today. They had an impressive amount of powders on hand, just no retumbo......

Oh well I have enough to do what I need to do right now and can keep looking for more of it while that rifle is off getting its new stock.

If you ever get up to Cheyenne, check Sportsman's there, they usually have more than anywhere close to home. Got 8lbs of TAC there yesterday and they had a good stock of others. Just didn't pay attention because I've got pistol covered and was looking for 5.56 stuff.
