I've personally met someone who served as a vietnam tunnel rat -he took most of a full ak mag to the stomach/abdomen/chest at close range and still somehow helped cleared the tunnel and made it to surgery and survived.....he's not someone of an imposing stature or overly intimidating, maybe a little crazy but I doubt he was on heavy drugs or anything.

I have absolutely no doubt that any person could take a few handgun rounds without stopping.

MSGT Benavidez has got to be one of the hardest men that ever walked the earth. I've got a biography about him that includes photocopies of his medical records.... they're unreal. The fact that he died of old age is a testament to the sheer force of will that man possessed.

I was going to post something along these lines in the purse fight about needing to kill people to know how to kill people (or whatever the hell everyone was arguing about in that thread about a cop winning a gunfight); We can kill people a couple of different ways. Punch holes in the plumbing or shut down the electrical.

Shutting down the electrical system is by far the most efficient method. It's also a pain in the ass to get right. Turns out the head moves.. a lot. Particularly at close range when the guy whose electrical system you're trying to switch off doesn't want to be cooperative.

The other option is to punch holes in the plumbing. We get the fluid coming out and the air going in and the system stops working. Unfortunately (especially if we're working under a time crunch) this doesn't necessarily happen fast. A man can be dead as a door nail but not know it. He can also make life miserable for you and anyone else until his body get's the message. Rule of thumb - If it's man-portable it shouldn't be relied on to stop the fight RFN. That's why we train failure to stop drills and non-standard response. You might have killed the dude, he just hasn't gotten the memo yet.

At the end of the day, the other guy gets a vote in any violent encounter. People under the influence of mind altering substances, true believers or simple hard cases might all die a little or a lot harder than the average bear.

Case in point; Sgt. Michael Hodshire was killed by an IED in Iraq in Oct of '05. When the device detonated he was struck in the head by shrapnel that went under his helmet, blew a hole in his skull and exposed grey matter. Mike got out of the truck, emptied his magazine in the direction of contact and dropped. Now he was dead as soon as that chunk of metal hit him, but either his body didn't know it or he just didn't freakin' care. Some dudes die hard.

Training, mindset, fitness, and conviction can all play a role. Don't train to fight some gangbanger with a Jennings. Train to fight your nightmare foe on their best day. Worst case scenario, go down swinging. That's really all any of us can ask.

A pair of Detroit thugs obviously had no idea who they were messing with when they targeted Paris Ainsworth, a 51-year-old grandma who carries a .45 caliber handgun. There’s a reason her siblings now jokingly refer to her as “Rambo.”


Ainsworth had just arrived home after working a grueling double shift on Saturday night when she noticed two men moving closer to her as she was preparing to exit her car. Sensing possible danger, she pulled out her .45 caliber handgun and put it in her pocket. She got her concealed carry permit about two years ago.

As it turned out, Ainsworth’s gut feeling about the men was correct.


One of the men reportedly told her, “Don’t pull it,” and then started shooting. Ainsworth was reportedly shot three times in the side and once in the hand. The woman then pulled her .45 and started blasting away at the violent thugs.


“I said, ‘You mother (expletive),’ and pulled out (my gun) and started shooting,” she told WDIV-TV.


Both of her attackers were later arrested after they checked in at Sinai-Grace Hospital to receive treatment for gunshot wounds. One of the men was reportedly shot in both of his legs.


Ainsworth, who was also attacked by an armed mugger roughly a decade ago, knows the too well the importance of being able to defend yourself. The grandmother of four owns two handguns and trains with them on a regular basis.


“If I wouldn’t have had my gun, I would be dead today,” she said, adding that the man who shot her “just had the devil in him.”

FWIW, I'm currently attending SOF-OEMS. In the lecture this morning the Doc said they have records of 47 instances of high velocity gun shot wounds directly to the heart that were witnessed by a third party. Of those, 17 of the victims didn't die instantly. The longest recorded instance, a Platoon Sgt in Vietnam, was hit something like 11 times and continued giving orders for six minutes.

Some men die harder than others.
