View Full Version : No more colored pmags by the end of the year.
I'm sure some of you have heard this, but just thought I'd give you guys a heads up. I know we can't buy them here anyway...
Hmm. So maybe someday they will be worth a little more than I paid?

So all black and no tan/fde/green etc? (i have no idea how many colors they produce?)
Anyone know why? To lazy to google.....
Not sure why... I had read rumors online, and decided to confirm it with Drake, and sure enough it's true.

I would just guess that changing between the colors just slows production down too much. Now that they have established a good reputation their products are in pretty high demand. I imagine sticking to one color lets them crank out magazines at a higher volume to meet demand.
We all know that foliage green was never a big seller, but I'm surprised that the FDE is going to be gone.

im no magpul expert but... The magpul website says they are only getting rid of colored MOE mags. Which are the gen 2 mags only. So, they are only making old style mags in black Gen 3 mags will be made in Color, at least according to their official website.

I really like F Green, I think if any green should go it should be the Olive Drab, that color is pretty ugly. I hope the still make the ranger plates in different colors.
I'm quite fond of my designer murse.

<queer eye for the straight guy> Don't you know it's all about accessorizing? Plain black with coyote tan is just gauche. Neanderthal! </queer eye for the straight guy>

No way OD Green is the best get rid of black.
Different colors for different calibers.
If MAGPUL doesn't make them, someone else will.

Probably Hexmag's next step, if they really take off. They already have multi-colored followers and floor plate indicators.
As a complete aside, black plastic/polymer is considerably more durable long-term when it comes to UV issues. When I still had a place in Florida we would only use black dock buckets for boats & such as the white ones fell apart in short order (UV would penetrate the lighter color but not black which stopped at the surface). I don't know if this applies to pmags but in many other applications, UV tears apart lighter colors but black seems to last...

I liked the prototype clear Pmags. Too bad they couldn't get them to work.

Exactly.
You guys obviously don't get it.
Pmags were made using infused strands of Chris costas beard. If you don't know, his beard is black. With some grey hairs in it, although weaker, magpul was able to create different colors fitting the tactical spectrum. Unfortunately, those hairs are starting to weaken and only the strongest (black) hairs will further be infused into Pmags.

That is generally true with many polymers. Carbon black is the economical UV inhibitor and turns the natural color to black. There are other UV inhibitors and anti-oxidant additives we can add to molded polymers, but they cost a lot more and the blend techniques are more complex. On the IM polymer parts I make, a mild color typically costs about 30% more and to get it with the same strength, about 50% more. A light color can be as much as twice the cost for the same strength.
In order to maintain the same color over multiple batches requires greater QC controls which does not add any performance benefits, just aesthetics.
I was told by an employee of a LGS that the reason is because the colored mags were the most common to come back in for repair. Basically the colored mags are less durable.
Just repeating what I was told.
