View Full Version : Removing small aperture from Magpul sight

I have a Magpul rear sight and I don't like the smaller of the two apertures. For the sake of keeping things simple, I'd like to disassemble it and remove the smaller one and just use the larger one. It looks pretty straight forward. Think I just drive out a small roll pin on the adjuster knob thingy and basically screw the apertures off the threaded part and just put the larger one back on when I go back together.

I was was just curious if anyone here had done such a thing in case you had any tips or pointers.

Thanks.

I've got the one with only the large aperture if you want to trade.

I didn't know they made one with just the large hole.

I would swap with you but you and I live in two totally different zip codes so I'll probably just modify mine.

Thanks for for the offer though. [Beer]

If you try it let me know Ray. When I bought my KSG I had an extra set of MBUS laying around, and thats what I have on it now. Not really meant for that use, but it works well. That said, the small rear doesn't really have any purpose on an 18" bullpup shotgun. I leave it out of the way all the time. Would be good with just removing it if it turns out to be straight forward.

Or if you want to hack them up together, let me know.

Why can't you just keep the small aperture flipped down?

It hangs up on stuff if it is always flipped down (e.g. flipped up when the sites are folded). Makes it harder to case/un-case, etc as that hangs on stuff.

Since I will never use the small aperture on my KSG, I'd just as well rather not have it there.

What J said. With it always flipped "down" it actually sticks out like a sore thumb. Especially with the sight folded down. I'd rather just remove it and not have to deal with it.

I've had A1 and A2 sights completely part and back together so I'm pretty sure the Magpul one isn't going to be any more difficult.

Okay. Sounds good. [Awesom] let us know how it goes!

Took the small aperture out this evening. Piece of cake. Not any different than swapping out an aperture on an A2 sight.

Was it as easy as you posted in the first post???

Nope. Easier. All I needed was a tiny roll pin punch and a tiny hammer to drive out the one roll pin. A circus monkey could do it.

Oh, and I did clamp it ever so gently in my bench vice with a piece of leather on each side to keep it still while I worked on it.

Ok, time to play help the idiot. I just went and handled my rear mbus. The aperture will flip towards the muzzle 90 degrees, then it stops, there isn't a second aperture that I can see. What am I doing wrong?

Not sure. Mine had two. A small one and a large one. If you just wanted to use the large one you had to flip the small one forwards towards the muzzle to get the small one out of the way.

Maybe yours is a first gen?

So when you flip it down you have no aperture?

correct. I did read a little more, maybe the little and big are stuck together since I haven't flipped the little down before. I bought them at sportsmans a couple of years ago, so they're not knockoffs. I'll try to separate them with a fingernail later.

The large aperture on mine doesn't flip down. (At least I don't think it does). It's made flat on the bottom so I don't think it was designed to fold down. The smaller one (that I removed) flips down forward so that the larger one can be used.

I'm not overly familiar with the Magpul sights. Always used Troy and Arms mostly if I used flip sights. Someone earlier mentioned his only had the one aperture. Maybe yours is one of those?

Ha. Never mind. That was you talking about the single aperture sight.

Would it have been easier to keep the sigh mounted, then remove pin? Sit on, or lay rifle flat, knock out pin, remove aperture, reinstall pin.

That's how nice rifles get scratched, Jim.

This picture might help you see the two apertures, the small flips up into the larger one, you need to use a fingernail to separate them and fold the small one forward.

Thanks for the better description and picture. I just wanted to use the larger one on mine. I didn't mind the smaller one flipped down out of the way with the sight up but it bothered me sticking up from the sight when it was folded in the down position. I like the fact that the sight pops up under spring tension for quick use but didn't want to have to take the time to peel the small aperture out of the way.

I just used a 1/4" drive Uni-Bit and hand reamed it out to the same diameter.
