View Full Version : PSA if you happen to be "VAS-ly different"

Mother's Day seems like a good time to mention this and I like you guys so I hope it helps. It's part PSA and part vent.... We (th3w01f and I) found out a few weeks ago that we are having another baby (#3 to be precise) [panic]
Not a huge surprise on the surface, we all know how these things happen. The interesting and surprising part is that vasectomies are supposed to be +99% effective. Apparently you guys are supposed to get rechecked Every Year afterwards to ensure your junk doesn't grow back together!
The funny part is that we had just talked about if we'd made the right decision about this nearly 6 months ago and I suppose the choice was made for us. But seriously! 7 years after the big snip and I thought I had some major issue with my health. Scared the hell outta me.
I realize that this is nearly unheard of unless you've looked so that's why I felt compelled to mention it. I have heard too many stories about this scenario breaking up marriages.
In the end we are very excited about the little guy and look forward to the addition to our family. I count myself extremely fortunate to be married to my best friend and that we trust each other. I'm also thankful that this didn't happen 10 years from now.

thanks for freaking me out. I'll be sleeping on the couch tonight and my wife will be wondering "what did I do to make him mad."
I'll be calling for a doc visit first thing in the morning for another 'test.'

Um, sounds like it wasn't done properly. Stainless steel clamps along with a cut and cauterize the cut ends. All three methods were performed by my doc.
The vasa deferentia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasa_deferentia) are cut (sometimes a piece removed), separated and then at least one side is sealed by ligating (suturing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suturing)), cauterizing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cauterizing) (electrocauterization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrocauterization)), or clamping

Got snipped in October of 1992. If My wife gets preggers again it'll be a miracle - she quit having sex with me years ago. (Oh, I mean she's post menopause.)
Now, my harem of mistresses, well, that's another issue altogether.

LOL menopause is a great BC method, I'm sure.
As as for it being done improperly, well it was very thoroughly and properly done... http://www.vasectomy-information.com/moreinfo/recanalisation.htm
It is, in fact, possible for the tubes to spontaneously regrow.

I've been thinking of getting the "big snip" soon. So you guys who had it...I've heard horror stories about sitting on the couch for a week with a bag of frozen peas on your junk due to pain, etc. And I've hear stories that it was a breeze. Maybe it "just depends"?
I'm just heading up to the low cost vet clinic and getting them completely cut off. Ain't gonna risk it!
Im just kidding, although some weighted replacements would be really safe!

[ROFL1] This and your sig don't really jive, but I guess cutting and breaking are rather different.

My dad told me that some guys were like limping around and whimpering. He played tennis the next day.

So I guess I'll have some frozen peas handy just in case. :)

Congrats on the addition!
Good to know- although that must have been one heck of a surprise. Congratulations, you two! :)

Relax Thomas, it's not the Menopause.
It's just you.....[Coffee]
Congrats on the future addition!
For those considering the snip, I drove to and from, played name that tune with the Dr. while he did the snip. Since I watched my wife's C-section, he asked my wife to come watch the snip. The only negative during the procedure is the smell. I've never been fond of the smell of burned flesh [gohome]
Just make sure your wife is 100% on board with the procedure. The Dr. told me afterwards; "What this man hath put asunder, only God can put back together."
Loaded or not, treat it like it is and always keep it pointed in a safe direction.
Be safe.

Yeah I guess if I go get the snip some day I'll have to change that. Maybe something like: all I used to have was My balls and my word, now I just hope you'll believe me after my snip.
I've been thinking of getting the "big snip" soon.
Getting a vasectomy was without a doubt the best purchase I've ever made.

Please no pics in the recent purchase thread.

Only thing recent about it was having some neighbors with kids over for dinner recently and being reminded how ecstatically happy I am I did that years ago.

Got it done years ago.
One of me is plenty...
No issues afterwards, no peas needed, no surprises...
But a friend of my wife got the surprise bun from her supposedly snipped husband...
The pain of the snip was worse than my appendectomy, and I had a rupture and a sliced artery during surgery. Worse than my torn quad too. The Doctor told me my pain would be worse than normal...the guy should know...due to the configuration of my vas deferens. He takes out a section and then seals the ends.
My wife liked the chill pill he gave me to take right before. :)
Would do it again no question, but the pain levels can be different.

recovery was a breeze, some discomfort the rest of your life
I have this really cool symptom of my body where as my right side does not really respond to local anesthetics, my vas was not different nor was the removal of my wisdom teeth.

You guys crack me up. Thanks for all of the congrats. It's a worthwhile procedure for +99% of the guys out there. I can't put myself into a man's shoes but I imagine it's not as bad as the alternative...
Thanks for all the kind words; it was a surprise and we did all the post procedure follow-up. This time when I went in they asked if I had taken advantage of their yearly free re-check... to which I replied no. :) Well I did a test this time and the response from the person who didn't know the whole story was that I must have brought the sample in too soon and to use other protection for at least a month and have it re-tested. I told her it had been 8 years and she was like 'Ohhh'. They did offer to re-do it at no charge.
Funning thing is that about 6 months ago we were discussing having it reversed but decided that was too much trouble.... be careful what you ask for. ;-)
BTW, the procedure was easy, but they refused to give me a 50% off discount.
