Here is the official thread!

Pawnee Sportsman's Center is going to be hosting a monthly long range match. Here is the information on it copied directly from their Facebook link:https://www.facebook.com/events/626422257448973/

"Join us for a NEW - inaugural MONTHLY Long Range Shooting Event. Now being held on the 2nd Saturday of every month!

This is NOT a Benchrest Competition!
Shooting positions will include prone, seated, supported, and unorthodox.

A gathering of like minded Colorado shooting enthusiasts and something you just don't want to miss.

"Join" This event here on our Facebook page and then INVITE your friends! SHARE it as well.

A fun skill building & networking event with an informal competitive spirit and just a great excuse to gather with friends and shoot some steel targets.
......

We are bringing Northeastern Colorado together thru this monthly Long Range Shooting Event.
Good Fun is Mandatory!

Shoot one to two different stages, when everyone is finished you probably can even run them again – your choice. The courses of fire will involve the Pawnee Sportsmen's Center 1,000yd Steel Target Range AND some Natural Terrain. There are always bragging rights and many opportunities to learn more about the sport and improve your gear, ammo, rifle.

This event is considered an Outlaw Long Range Event even though we follow pretty closely all standard competitive shooting safety rules. What makes it really super cool is that a stage(s) of any given match uses the Natural Terrain of Pawnee Sportsmen's Center (1,800 acres and one of Colorado's largest range facilities) in the courses of fire. This Long Range Event is meant to be fun for all levels of shooters – beginners are encouraged and always welcome.

SUMMER Check-in: 9am - 9:30am
Cost: $40

Location:
Pawnee Sportsmen’s Center
40914 County Rd 71
Briggsdale, CO. 80611

We need help to identify volunteers and resources. It’s an all volunteer sport. We need help with Range Officers/Timers, “props”, and other target & stage assets.

Cost: $40

Round count: 40-60
Stage are in development and will be evolving as time goes on.

I am not running the match Victory Defense Consulting is, but I will answer any questions that I can that anyone has!

One to two stages and the cost is $40.00? I have to ask, what do these stages entail? How many shots and positions on each stage?

Not trying to crap on your thread, just want to know what I am getting for my $40.00 entry fee.

If it isn't too late - lets chat at the Cup next week. I'll make copies of some of the better match booklets.

Nothing crazy - I am not advocating standing on your head or hanging upside down but there is alot more to shooting LR, ie positional, barricades, natural terrain and speed.

What should people expect on distances/target sizes? For example, if I'm comfortable on 2 MOA targets at 600y with heavy .223 am I going to be in over my head?

banks74

Nope, you won't be in over your head at all! Definitely give it a try!

Had the opportunity to this and it was entertaining and I had fun learning. Being that is the first time shooting past 500 yards I think I did better then I expected. The first stage started on steel at 400 yards and went out to 1000 yards and I was using my .308 bolt gun. I hit a couple which made me smile. Second stage was some steel at unknown distances from 180yds to I think 240yds and this plate flipper tree thing that I could not hit to save my life. I changed guns at this point and was now on my 5.56 AR with a 1x4 scope. Again I managed to hit a couple and smile. The last stage was way too much for my AR and I stopped after a bunch of misses. This stage went from about 300yds all the way out to about 800yds and it spanned a pretty good area of the open fields out there at Pawnee. In all I have fun and learned. As I do more of these events I hope to pick up the routine and improve my skills. Thanks to all who got this cool event setup.

I'm hesitant in posting information about the match... Well because I don't want it to become too popular. But I have to say it was quite enjoyable and nice to have up north here. The mix of range + open terrain was super nice. Unfortunately my shooting partner and I were not able to stay for the second field stage but what we shot was well worth the time and effort. The wind was a usual 15-20 mph Pawnee day and I was the lone .223 shooter. BUT, what I liked the most was that on the 1000 yard range it was shooters choice for what target you engaged at each distance. Targets in varying sizes from 20" square to 8" triangles were available at each distance starting at 400 yards, going back each 100 yards except for at the 800 yard point where they had not constructed the target stands yet. Each shooter got 4 rounds at each distance. You could engage any target twice and then you had to move to another target. Only hits count and the size of the target determined the score for the hit. You had to call your shots first and the next shooter was spotting with the prior shooter score keeping. The availability of the 20" targets kept me in the game through the 700 yard mark with the .223 and then for 900 and 1000 it was hail marry time in the wind. A legend of the range was provided with the target placement, size and points outlined.

My only complaint was the lack of berms behind the targets to spot impacts like there are at CRC. While this make the match more challenging, I'm there to learn and if I have no idea where my round is impacting due to the heavy grass behind the targets and no berm, it's hard to make adjustments and learn as you go. While this would be expected on field stages, it's nice on a range environment to be able to learn as much as you can about the effects of the wind.

The field area available as part of the Pawnee Sportsman's Center is an excellent addition to the match and really highlights the weaknesses you may have in your skill set or training... Such as my complete inability to make contact with the 4" dueling treat plates from an odd position on a wobbly wall at 243 yards. Something clearly missing in my training time.

I'm very thankful for the folks at Pawnee Sportsman's Center for offing this well needed match location and to JJ from Victory Defense Consulting (http://victorydefense.com) for putting on the match. JJ was very open to input and provided a relaxed atmosphere to shoot in. More information about this match as well as other matches that Victory Defense Consulting is putting on at the Pawnee Sportsman's Center can be found at their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/VictoryDefenseConsulting?ref=br_tf). We will for sure be back next match and hopefully it's not too crowded! I only shot a few photos from the range stage.

Thank You for the suggestions, details of the match and so far the compliments of the match!
While it isn't MY range I am happy to carry the suggestions to the powers that be and see if we can't get some of them implemented. As the match grows and the fun continues I think we will be able to get some of them addressed for you all.

Shot this match yesterday and this is a fun one. I hope more start showing up, we only had three shooting it. It's pretty changing because of there not being any berms behind the targets. Knowing your distances is key and thanks to others for ranging the targets and spotting for me.

Having a proper dope chart is key too. Last month, the one I had stopped at 650y. This month, I forgot to change the muzzle velocity from the default 3000fps. Whoops! It's a good learning experience though, and that's what it's all about.

Have you started shooting this match in 2016? I shoot the Cheyenne Mtn. match regularly, but I'd like to mix thing up and shoot this match. Sounds like a lot of fun. Is there an email list I could get on in case of match cancellations, etc.?

Anybody know the round count for this match?

It is usually between 55-65. JJ mixes it up month to month and it kind of varies. He also allows extra shooting before/after.

No matches so far this year. Contacted Victory Defense and they said:

"It was moved to the last weekend of the month last year.... I have not decided if we will run it this year or not yet. It would probably remain on the last weekend of the month if we did. I have a 3 Gun event Sunday and then I will look at the potential of a long range event end of May and decide early next week. It will be announced on this page (Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/VictoryDefenseConsulting/) if I decide to do it."

If you want them to run the match I encourage you to contact them directly and let them know.
