View Full Version : Poor Pat Down Frisk Almost Get's Officers Killed.
This is my question to this scenario. I know they are investigating this, but this really perplexes me.

It's called a shitty pat down.
There could also be internal issues / politics that have some of the rank & file perturbed.
HOWEVER it's still a shitty pat down and almost cost an officer their life.
"HOWEVER it's still a shitty pat down".............................[word]

A long time ago, in a city far, far away, I was working at a motorcycle shop and these two kids come in. One is 13 and the other 14. They want to buy a Honda XR-75. the sales guy says sure, figuring they are just looking around and fantasizing or may come back with the parents so he shoots them a price. the kids say great and split. About an hour later they come back with cash. But not just any cash, bags of silver dollars. The sales guy tells the boss, the boss says write up a deal but take your time and he calls the cops. A cop shows up a little later and talks to the kids, they admit that the older kid talked the younger kid in to taking the coins from his father's collection. So, theft is now on the table so the cop handcuffs them, frisks them and because they are juveniles he calls for a officer to assist with juveniles. Soon the other officer arrives and they discuss the crime and the new cop starts to frisk them. The first cop says that already did a frisk and that they were clean. the second cop ignores him and continues and guess what? Yep, the older kid has a loaded .32 Beretta in his jacket pocket and as the cop removed it I could see that it was already cocked. He gave the first cop a dressing down right then and there about proper procedure and told him after he filed his report the first cop would be suspended pending and investigation in to he lack of PPP.
Cops have a hard enough job without needing to be worried that the other cop is a lazy ass that can't do his job the right way and puts every one else at risk. What an idiot.

This was the first thing that came to mind, though I would've thought the pay down would be thorough. Not cop bashing in the least bit, but if this is the case, the officer/officers should be reprimanded with extreme prejudice.

I've got a buddy in D4 ( he was on duty but not at the station at the time) and when this story broke the other day he posted the news link on FB ..
I posted " wow someone needs a pat down refresher course" he posted back " Unfortunately its happened to alot of us"
seems to me DPD needs to step up the game ...
Not to beat up the guy too bad but he could have gotten himself, other officers, or citizens hurt or killed by this fuck up. I'm sure he is kicking himself over it and will step up his pat downs to be safer next time.

This! I'm glad I had some great Troopers from CSP teach our arrest control in the academy. One even said "Don't give a shit what some guy calls me, I'm going to be thorough in my pat down. No one gets into my car unless I'm 100% sure they don't have any weapons." And that's advice I plan on using every single day, because I'm going home at the end of my watch. I know cops who have been called names that would make a USMC veteran blush, but they do their jobs the right way so they can go home at night. I feel no sympathy for the officer who put this guy in the back of his car.

Not only do officers conduct half-assed pat-downs, they often don't check their cars after removing a suspect. I found a gun, knives, drugs and all sorts of misc crap in patrol cars when searching the back seat area prior to a shift.
I think OP was being sarcastic that an obviously prohibited person HAD A GUN.
If OP is truly perplexed how he STILL HAD THE GUN, other posts have addressed that.

Hey, what the hell? We passed the background check bill. How'd he get his hands on a gun? I thought the Dems fixed all of this.

You mean to tell me gun control laws don't make us safer? Get out of here! That's ludicrous!

This. You can say whatever you want about me, but words can't hurt you as bad as bullets can.

EVERY cop at one time or another has done a poor search. I have. More than once unfortunately. Not to make any excuses, but it usually has been when we had a chaotic scene, multiple arrests, or riot situations.

I believe is a thorough pat down. They showed us some simple ways to hits some big weapons if it is done wrong. I remember telling one of my guys "that guy better feel like you owe him dinner after the search"

My thing isn't the fact that their search sucked, it's the fact that it sucked after the things he said. And I understand that you miss things. Kids these days where their whole wardrobe. But if you make threats against my life and are resisting, well then I'm gonna search the shit out of you.

You search enough people you're going to miss some things on occasion, you just hope it's not a full size pistol...

Yeah I thought about quoting the thread title before my comment to make that clear but got lazy.....but I was referring to the original topic. At one point after he was gut shot and going to the ER he apparently yelled that he "had meth in his ass" or something to that effect, maybe the gun was tucked up in there too. I probably wouldn't check someone's crack if I was frisking them.
