So, trying to decide on some sort of firearm project to entertain me. Not really wanting to do another AR build. Kicking around some ideas. Here's what I have so far. If any of you have any cool ideas I'd love to hear them. It might inspire me.

1. Bolt action rifle build in 300 Blackout. I like the caliber due to it's low recoil and it seems like it has quite a bit of accuracy potential. Would be the bee's knees to throw a can on it someday down the road.

2. AK kit build. Mostly because I've never done one and thought it would be neat to try. Main drawback here is it seems the price of parts kits has gone up to the point where this may not be cost feasible.

3. 6.5 Grendel build. I like the potential of this caliber in the AR platform for a target type rifle. But, I don't really want to do another AR so probably won't go this route.

Any my other cool ideas? I prefer to do as much of the work myself as I can but I do "know somebody" if I need stuff done that is beyond my comfort level.

I've been kicking around the idea of a bolt gun in .300 blackout. Loaded subsonic I'd imagine it would be stupidly quiet.

I really like the idea of the 6.5 Grendel. There was also a thread about a 6mm AR cartridge here also that seemed interesting. I like the odd calibers and owning something not many people have. I reload so ammo is mostly not a problem, but I'd like to use the standard 30rd mags so that limits things.

Not sure if you saw this:

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2012/04/18/savage-scraps-300-aac-blk-rifles/

Savage claims that they could not get the accuracy they wanted from 300BLK subsonics so they scrapped their project to bring out a 300BLK rifle. They hinted that they could get good accuracy from the 300BLK supersonic loads, but not the subs.

Take it for what it is worth, if you are going to shoot supersonic that could be a cool project. But for me, I'd rather shoot a 308 if I'm planning to shoot 30cal over the speed of sound.

Sound expensive. I'm more of a beer and Cheetos kind of a guy.

If you don't have one, a precision .22 bolt gun is good fun. Mine are my favorite rifles to shoot. You can learn all the LR stuff in 200 yards. Not having to load for it is a plus. Match ammo is generally available.

My little Savage is quite a hammer. I have $700 total in it including scope and bipod.

Thanks guys. Just for the record, I'm not really a rimfire guy. Tried it but it's just not my thing.

There's a joke in there somewhere.

Did that about twenty five years ago. Not really what I'm looking for right now.

Kind of leaning towards the 300 bolt action. Not sure what standards Savage had in mind when they claimed they couldn't get acceptable accuracy out of their prototypes but I don't see any reason a person couldn't get sub MOA groups out of one. Finding a barrel blank with a 1/7 or. 1:8 twist might be the tricky part. Seems most of the 30 cal blanks are 1:14, 1:12, or 1:10. I am guessing a faster twist will be better for stabilizing the heavier bullets. Especially since their velocities are so low in that caliber.

I like the bolt gun idea, though I've thrown around the idea of an ak build lately.

Sound expensive. I'm more of a beer and Cheetos kind of a guy.It can be, but I think something like a 243 shooting at 2800-300fps would be a lot more fun and useful than a 300BLK bolt gun. Ballistics on 300BLK are not great even from a bolt rifle, but a 308/243/260 is a great round out to 800-1000y. Good scopes are not cheap, but there are some good options that won't break the bank.

I have to agree. The 300BLK starts losing its legs exponentially at about 500yds from my experience. I just got back from Whittington last month and met John Donner. Great guy. He helped me setup my 50Cal and then invited me over to his house. I walk into his office and there are more medals in there from all around the world than a museum. Most of them 1st or 2nd place, none of them just for showing up. He showed me his guns, words can not describe it. The reason I bring this up is that he is hitting at the 1K line inside a paper plate, he still has the targets. He helped me pick the 6mm BR Norma as a longterm goal to be able to shoot.

BTW: He was doing this both with normal scopes but also with iron sights.

If I do a 300 Blackout it will only be for a 100 yard rifle. Mostly to shoot groups on paper. I really wouldn't have any intention of trying to shoot at longer distances. If I wanted something for shooting way out I would probably build a 260.

[QUOTE=ray1970;1626129]So, trying to decide on some sort of firearm project to entertain me.
I have a mini Mauser in 223 that would make a good 300BLK and I have a 30 cal barrel with a 1 in 8 twist for up to 250 Gr bullets.
Any one interested?

I just need a lath and some time.
