Lets say hypothetically if one had a rain barrel that was full then froze over the winter, cracked and fell over breaking the faucets off. What might you use to:

1. Seal the plastic

2. Use to attach the faucets again. Metal or plastic fittings? Both faucets look like outdoor brass hose hook ups.

I have some ideas but want to hear from those of you that have more punches in your man card I am all thumbs with stuff like this but love the learning process. Yea I know I should have drained some off but got caught off guard this year. Normally I drain several times per year to keep flushed and use a lot on plants on our patio throught the spring.

Youtube plastic welding. Get a harbor freight soldering gun and go to town.

Unless you have the missing chunk its pretty much totalled

You can build a new adapter from conduit parts. Buy the official one or buy a valve with one built in.

Rain barrels are illegal here blah blah blah

I *maybe* want to make one of these when I get my own home. I always liked the simple design of the hefty gray trash cans with lid & epoxy the fittings into place.

I have had good luck repairing plastics with shoe goo and mesh drywall tape.

+1 for JB Weld

Or Bondo would work

This would be a great idea if my 55 gallon drums of stored water (filled from city water) were ever to fall over. Great thread!

Post on a whitewater kayaking forum, as durable as those kayaks are, I've seen some of them crack and I suspect they have crossed this bridge once or twice...

If you do this you will get an answer like mine

Jb weld cures and will crack off when the barrel flexes

goop or e6000 or aquarium glue will work and you might get a second season out of it.

Bondo will fall off immediately

Just means your not using enough JB Weld.

I don't think the plastic kayak repair will work on this. Maybe a sheet of fiberglass and some resin from the inside.

a hole saw drill bit

some screen mesh

+

a couple $5.00 or less garden spigots

=

less than what it would end up costing to fix and then replace your existing rain catcher.

A guy I know (who lives in a place that you can have rain barrels. duhhh) bought some Rubbermaid Brute garbage cans and used a couple of these kits to daisy chain the barrels together at the bottom. http://www.amazon.com/EarthMinded-RBK-0001-DIY-Rain-Barrel/dp/B005CJFBJE

I have to wait for a picture of his system to post, but in order for it to look like some unobtrusive garbage cans he has on the side of his house, he got a green one for "yard waste", a blue one with a triangle arrow symbol for "recyclables", and a regular grey one for "trash". So that his yard doesn't look bad or anything.

Finally, they took so long to get here from... a state that allows rain barrels where my buddy lives.
