El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa is embroiled in accusations of sex with subordinates, abusive treatment of employees and dismantling oversight of the office budget that could stain his 12-year career and sink future prospects for one of the most powerful local Republicans.
Looks like they have emails and texts to back this up. What a shame.

"I think often about touching kissing and licking every inch of your amazing body," said a message dated 1:48 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009, from Maketa's phone number that is typical of the exchanges with Cardarelle.
I am sure he was just messing around, and it was out of context! [guillotine]

I guess it does.
A lot of people respected the Sheriff and if all this is true it's a darn shame because he had potential to be an influential force for conservatives. Can't be a powerful voice for conservatives with baggage like this...

Looks like the Democrat Opposition Research found enough dirt to keep him from running for another office (which I really don't think he was planning on doing anyway).
If you're going to put yourself in the public eye you really should keep it in your pants.
Don't play well with the powers behind the throne, you may just suddenly find your sent box filled with some new e-mails and texts.

Sorry...but, IF this is true, it looks like a mess of Maketa's own making. When there's that much evidence out there I don't think the opposition really has to do anything. Sending pictures like that to a work computer? Seriously...who doesn't know how stupid that is?
Besides...IF this is true, he's not someone I'd want holding the office of Sheriff or higher office in state government, conservative/republican or not. I don't care who revealed the information.
It's one thing to hear sour grapes from one or two people. But there appears to be a large group of people who are all saying basically the same thing about him.
It looks pretty bad.

I see quite a few "ifs" in Bailey's commentary.
Anyway, the Indy did a piece in 2010 that stated these very same things.
If these allegations are true; I will be disappointed, but not surprised.

Meh, another Maketa hit piece by Phillips. Phillips has been after Maketa ever since Maketa started fighting back against the Democrat-led gun control laws and showed he knew what he was doing in addressing emergencies like the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires while Hickenlooper just drooled in front of photo ops. I'd be sorry to hear of this if it proves out but I just don't trust Phillips and the Gazette has been Post-lite for a while now.
Only for Democrats.
It's a resume enhancer for them.

I didn't "shit" on anybody. Why don't you at least try to understand the sentiment I was attempting to get across by capitalizing and bolding "IF"?
Yes...3 women deny it. Most of them probably wouldn't want the information made public IF it was true so naturally they're going to deny it. Do you think someone made up an email with a picture of him without a shirt on and sent it to one of the women? Seriously?
I'll still withhold final judgment until more info comes out. But sometimes, people "have it out" for others because their allegations are true.
Regardless, with the amount of information in that article it still casts some doubt on Maketa's integrity. And that's very disappointing considering what a strong, conservative, outspoken 2A advocate he's been for all of us.

I understand your sentiment quite well.
Saw somewhere that he just had his next in line nominate him for a prestigious award. Don't know all the details, but seems staff was gathered with nominations from their depts. and we're told it would be Maketa. Decided then & there that if true, I had no respect for the man. If these latest allegations are true, it would just confirm the earlier allegations from his staff.

There seems to be a lot of evidence against the sheriff, which I think would keep the reporting to nothing but the facts, but wow, the media is getting VERY petty and personal about all this.
KDVR has an article that the very first thing they point out is that the sheriff is a prominent repub. Then it goes on to say how honest and accomplished the Gazette's reporter is. And how the sheriff always talked to the media in the past but now he won't. Etc, etc, etc. The article reads exactly like a political hit piece commercial during election season.
El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa, one of the state’s most powerful and outspoken Republicans...
The sweeping Gazette story about the commanders’ complaint was written by Dave Phillipps, who won journalism’s top honor, the Pulitzer Prize .
Meanwhile, Maketa has publicly characterized Phillipps as “a media representative” who “lacks journalistic ethics, … clearly has demonstrated an agenda and regularly falsifies or omits facts.” .
Given the preponderance of evidence — some of it photographic and confirmed by independent analysts — in this latest complaint filed by three of Maketa’s commanders, it may be more difficult for Maketa to characterize it as “dishonest.” .
Maketa is well-known for his willingness to get in front of a camera, and has done so with FOX31 Denver recently in support of gun rights......... However, in regard to the most-recent complaint, which was reportedly filed on May 12, Maketa told FOX31 Denver through a spokesperson that he had retained legal counsel and would have no comment. .
Read it all here. This is no longer simple reporting but is obviously a political hit piece.
http://kdvr.com/2014/05/23/el-paso-county-sheriff-maketa-accused-of-affairs-intimidation-budget-improprieties/
EDIT: And how did this reporter get hundreds of text messages? As far as I can tell there hasn't yet been a formal investigation by any legal body...and the girls are denying it so it's likely they didn't share them...so how did the reporter get his hands on them? And the emails for that matter? If a legal investigation didn't uncover them and the sheriff/girls didn't leak them...how?

Calling for his resignation just because he's been accused of something is a douche move too if you ask me (full disclosure, I believe the probability that the accusations are true to be greater than 50% ... however ALL the accusations and their correlating evidence are coming from 3 guys he disciplined ... and we're not looking at whether they are acting in good faith or just disgruntled).

Would have to agree; and the fact it is an election year! Good way to try, and discredit the side that has been in control for over the last 20 years. From the Sheriff before Anderson to Maketa, and now back to Anderson. Some people are not happy about that, and want the Sheriff's office.

It doesn't look good for Makita. But evidence needs to be LEGALLY collected, and not POLITICALLY motivated.
I hate that I can't get line breaks. If it's not clear, I'm saying if this actually is Text Messages, you've got an almost 100% chance that they were not legally obtained, and someone might have installed some shit on his phone unless we are talking about S.O. owned phone. My best guess is that they are instant messages on a computer (nothing to do with a phone).
And this is my point. The fact that the MEDIA got ANY messages, computer or phone, BEFORE a legal investigation is highly suspicious. Am I wrong when I think the media has zero legal access to SO computers? Or SO phones? Today the media published portions of what they describe as personal emails. How in the hell are they getting this stuff? True or not, I seriously question the legality of how all the messages were obtained.
Did a Sheriff office employee take them from the Sheriff's computer or phone? Was it one of the complainants? They accuse him of inappropriate discipline. This is all conjecture of course, but if it was one of them that is leaking all these documents, and I can't think of anyone else with more of a motive than them....then unauthorized access of your boss's computer is certainly grounds for disciplinary action.
I believe public officials should be held accountable. And I believe employees, public or private, have a right to bring allegations against their employees for wrong doing. However, due process needs to be king. If these documents were obtained illegally than those people responsible need to be charged. The people of El Paso County certainly have the right to know if their elected officials are up to no good. But all the people with a beef against the Sheriff should have filed the complaint and let the legal process discover the documents.
Colorado wiretapping laws allow a conversation to be recorded as long as one (1) person in the conversation is aware it is being recorded.
Unlike many other states, not all parties to a conversation need to know it's being recorded.
There's also nothing illegal about sharing recordings someone made legally. I'm guessing that goes for computer conversations as well.

If it is the girls who released the documents, this might certainly apply. But so far all three are denying it as well so I have a hard time believing it was them.

If it's on a work computer (and in this case a public employee's computer) there are many people within the organization who could easily access the info as the info would be stored on the organization's servers. And, there is little expectation of privacy on a public employee's computer. He/they/everyone should know that.

Everyone does know that so that makes me wonder if it was his work computer or not. But the emails could be from anywhere. However the picture the media keeps showing of him obviously came from his phone. Maybe he emailed it to the girl and maybe he did so with his work email, in which case it would end up on the server anyway. But they say it's a text and that makes the most sense to me. At this point, i'm willing to bet the members of this forum have done more research and investigation into the matter than any media outlet or "authority" figure, but it doesn't matter, it's newsworthy, and a chance to ruin a Republican Sheriff's career.
Disclaimer: IF the accusations are true, Mr. Maketa made his bed, as much as it bothers me. I really looked up to him as a Sheriff and politician. If you can't trust him, who can you trust?

Reread the article:
In addition to the complaints, The Gazette obtained more than 500 emails and text messages dating to 2008 between Maketa and Cardarelle and Huntz.
The messages show Maketa had sexually explicit conversations with Cardarelle, calling her his "soul mate."
The messages show Maketa gave Huntz advice on how she could avoid punishment for misconduct at work.
"I think often about touching kissing and licking every inch of your amazing body," said a message dated 1:48 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009, from Maketa's phone number that is typical of the exchanges with Cardarelle.
An independent digital forensics expert confirmed that the messages obtained by The Gazette originated from Cardarelle's email account on county computer servers.
Read more at http://gazette.com/accusations-cloud-sheriff-terry-maketas-future-commanders-complaint-alleges-affairs-budget-improprieties/article/1520446#CUbUrrLJYJ7sklRm.99
The Republican candidate, who is expected to replace Maketa, is Fountain Police Deputy Chief Bill Elder, who has vowed to do a forensic audit of the office budget.
Maketa may feel forced to keep the women in their current jobs, said Moore, who was shown the emails. He noted the emails and texts between Cardarelle and Maketa's accounts, obtained by The Gazette, had been stored in a folder on Cardarelle's work computer.
I'm all for giving Maketa an opportunity to explain himself. But at a minimum this casts serious doubts about his integrity, judgment and leadership abilities.
Long time ago I ran those mail servers, the SO uses county email and at the time we kept only 30 days backup to reduce the FOIA search scopes. We did not purge from boxes nor did we limit pat files so a user could keep everything for ever if they wanted and it would be discoverable. I don't think any employment contracts would play in except to speak of acceptable use. Systems do not below to shr office.

He seemed like such an awesome sheriff to those of us that elected him. Sad ending to what appeared to be a great career.
And also sad to see San Agustin swept up in this mess. He was involved heavily in some of the Columbine HS "failure analysis" and was sent to Boulder along with Lou Smit when the Boulder police asked for help with the JonBenet Ramsey case.
(They both walked away form the case when they realized the the Boulder police had already settled upon the father as the murderer and weren't going to change their minds despite a ton of evidence to the contrary. Now THERE are some police that should be locked up.)
