View Full Version : How to beat your WoodPecker
I have a pretty new Tuff-Shed, just put it in last year. I look out my bedroom window one morning and I see what looks like a bullet hole in the top, above the door. WTH!!! When I go out to see what is going on and there is a nice little hole with a bunch of divets leading up to where a woodpecker tried to find... Just..... The ...right place. Hmmmm, what to do. I thought about it for awhile. If I just fix it he will come back and make new hole. Shoot'em.... I did just get a new suppressor.. but no, not worth the legal hassle and honestly I have no wish to kill something for doing what it is supposed to do that is not a direct threat to me or mine. That does not mean I think this should continue. I go into my shed and looking around notice my camping gear and a few fire logs... You know, the ones ready to light. I put one of these in front of the hole. He came back to find the hole closed up. As expected he went ahead to make a new hole. He even got pretty far in before I am sure this bad tasting wood made him think the whole shed tastes like shit!!! It's been weeks and no new holes. I thought this might help anybody else dealing with a similar problem.
And to think I just waste my time shooting them.

What is the mv spec on a male woodpecker?
Sent from my subconscious mind.

The beak of the woodpeckers grows continuously precisely because of the way in which it is used. The sharp beak is used like a chisel. The beak hits the tree with a speed of 6-7 m (20-23 ft) per second, equaling 20 km (12 mi) per hour. The stop is instant. The slowdown at the impact is 1,000 times

The brain of a woodpecker, that weighs a mere 2 to 4 grams, can stand the shock and the speed with which the blows of the head take place because of the large cranial surface (which distributes the shock evenly) and the stiff neck muscles which do not

I wouldn't admit that to anyone, they are protected in Colorado.

I was speaking theoretically of course.
[Awesom]
But, is it a big no-no to shoot them if they are destroying your property?

Since they fall under the non-game/migratory status, it is. You are supposed to get a federal permit, and get the DOW involved. Prove damage, etc.
Theoretically, of course.
Man, glad I never actually shot one.
Of what though?
Of something I would need brain bleach for. tis why it too so lng for me to drum up the courage.
And to think I just waste my time imagining shooting them.

I have spent thousands of $ over the past decade repairing damage to my cedar home because of those nasty little beasts. I have had some luck with decoy owls hung up around the house, but some of those birds have the gall to actually land on the fake owl and then peck the plastic!
I hate em!
