Seems it is now OK to have a firearm in a USPS parking lot.*
Most CCW instructors I asked were unaware of this change.

and

*NOTE: I decided to add this footnote to Post #1, so onlookers could see that a correction is being made, rather than modify the original text.
The statement "Seems it is now OK to have a firearm in a USPS parking lot." is not accurate.
It applies only to the AVON, CO post office parking lot.
Please read through the thread for details.
DISCLAIMER:
Since the articles are from JUL13 and FEB14, I thought this would be posted (and maybe it is).
I spent some time searching to see if this would be a re-post,
but I did not come up with anything.
If it is, I apologize and ask that the Mods/Re-post Police please merge it.

I don't think there's been any change in this with the exception of the court case. The court says it's OK. As far as I know, CFRs and Federal Law haven't changed yet. Just because the senate committee signed off on it doesn't make it law.

Thanks for the clarification on that part.
Seems my statement " Seems it is now OK to have a firearm in a USPS parking lot.. " may be may have "jumped the gun" (pun intended) a bit.
Maybe something like "Seems it will might be (or is likely to be ) OK to have a firearm in a USPS parking lot." might be more accurate.
Thanks for encouraging me to dig further .
Here is the court transcript. http://smartgunlaws.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Bonidy-Docket-Version.pdf
After reading through it, it seems a few "details" were glossed over in the CNN article cited.
1) This particular parking lot is sort of a shared public lot/post office lot
2) Ruling only applies to THIS lot and THIS post office (AVON, CO)...not ALL post offices
3) The Senate article, while it SEEMED related, now seems to be a more independent effort to allow firearms at the PO
4) The CCW instructors I spoke with were right...I wasn't
So hopefully my followup here (encourage by BAILY GUNS) still provides some useful info about potential changes in carrying on USPO property.

Man...that is one biased article from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. They don't even pretend to be objective.

So firearms are NOT allowed in the parking lot of a PO, even if in a vehicle?

So firearms are NOT allowed in the parking lot of a PO, even if in a vehicle?
My question as well:
Can I place it in the glove box (ideally before parking), park the car and THEN enter the post office?
Or remain in the car while the wife drops the mail?
How about drive-by dropping it in the mailbox that is ON the parking lot?[facepalm]
I believe it is legal to have a firearm secured (and concealed) in a vehicle parked on a school parking lot.
Or on your person while picking up the kids PROVIDED you do not exit the vehicle.

Yea, "If this decision is allowed to stand, it would allow guns to be brought within a few feet of all sorts of government buildings, which could gravely endanger the safety of everyone who uses those buildings."
Just the mere presents of a gun is gravely endangering. [bulls]

If a law abiding citizen isn't a danger with a CCW until they get within a few feet of a government building, which has the power to suddenly make them crazy, perhaps it's the government building that is the problem. Let's eliminate those.
This (restricting firearms in the parking lot/mail drop lane) is one of the dumbest things ever.
I'm sure as hell not parking across the street to use the USPS facility.
