A&E doctors are calling for a ban on long pointed kitchen knives to reduce deaths from stabbing.
A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase - and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings.
They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon.
The research is published in the British Medical Journal.
The researchers said there was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.
They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen.
None of the chefs felt such knives were essential, since the point of a short blade was just as useful when a sharp end was needed.
The researchers said a short pointed knife may cause a substantial superficial wound if used in an assault - but is unlikely to penetrate to inner organs.

This has been going on for the better part of a decade over there.
I remember reading a story a while back about the boy scouts over there not being allowed to have swiss army knives.

Guess they'll have to resort to slashing now... or maybe just make a shiv out of a piece of metal?
Good Lord. The pussification intensifies. Some day someone will attack somebody with a tent stake, and the cry will go out.....

They should just chain everyone's wrists to their waists with enough room to reach for a keyboard at a desk. Maybe a net from forearm to forearm to prevent strangling someone

the nanny, she is strong in the old country.
there was a show several years ago when Jamie Oliver, an English chef, was trying to get Americans to eat healthier and focused on the Charleston, WV, school board. They weren't allowed to have table knives in schools there for fear that someone may be hurt.

When pointed sticks are outlawed, only outlaws will have pointed sticks.
Srsly, you can kill someone with a toothbrush or part of a razor blade, as is proved many times at least weekly in prisons everywhere in America and the rest of the world. There's no such thing as true safety, only so many crave the illusion they irrationally don't care how that illusion is foist off on them.

I find it absolutely amazing that some of the best rifles in the world are made there, what a shit show.
Ya, saw this last time I was over there
I find it absolutely amazing that some of the best rifles in the world are made there, what a shit show.
The price tag on the rifles in question tend keep them out of the hands of all but the aristocracy, hence why it's ok to allow said manufacturers to continue.

Shotguns too.
Wonder what they'd think of my high capacity assault swords and daggers....

This was exactly my argument against a coworker Wednesday regarding guns when he felt that we need to have all mental health data available in background checks for gun purchases. The conversation started over the Isla Vista killings.
He felt that a 15 day waiting period for long guns & 30 day for handguns was reasonable - to ensure all mental health data on a potential gun buyer was evaluated. After I pointed out the violation of privacy rights, he said that such a violation wasn't important when public safety was the goal. He stated that when safety was the goal, freedoms should take a back seat. I used the argument above to inform him that safety (in any form) is just an illusion.
I let him know that with just the things in my pockets (no knife), I could still kill him before anyone could stop me even if we were surrounded by a 15 foot circle of cops. It didn't change his opinion at all. This guy is retired Navy. You'd think that somewhere along the line he would have gotten smart over the perception of safety/security versus true safety/security.
Moronic imbeciles would happily give up every ounce of freedom to live in a world where the perception of safety rules.

Should take him to any of the many local prisons and let him hang out with the residents for a few hours ... they have almost zero freedom preciously with the goal of enhanced safety and he'd likely be lucky to make it out unscathed.
Yes, I get the argument that my prison analogy is flawed because "those people" are different than the general populace ... and they are, but all prison does is create an environment where there are less innocent/honest/naive people to victimize and yet they're perfectly capable of victimizing their fellow hardened criminals, often at a greater rate than on the outside.

No they are not they are just the ones that got caught so far... they were in the general populace before they got caught. Not like they went from birth to the prison system they were on the streets at some point...
And the one's in prison are the dumb ones.... there are much more evil ones still running around. THAT is the scary thought.

Thank you Diana Moon Glampers.
Just realized this article is dated 9 years ago.
Bunch of toffee arsed wankers. Airstrip One has gone from a nation of strength and steel to an island of buftie boys and Muslims who can't own guns, knives, or get ham on their samiches at Subway. Pathetic.
Uncharacteristically vague for you...Are you for or against the proposed ban? [ROFL1]
