DIY timney on a rem 700

Ok I tried to find something on this but couldn't. If there is, sorry ahead of time. Everyone has feelings nowadays. So I don't feel like sending my .300 win mag back to Remington and just went ahead and ordered a Timney for it. I'd like to do it myself and feel very capable of doing it. Being a great gun community was just wondering if there are any pointers or heads up needed with this job. Looks rather simple but figured I would ask. Thanks ahead of time.

It is a fairly simple install but pay attention to a few things. Drive the pins out from the left to the right, there is a stake mark on the left side of the reciever for each pin to keep it from walking out. Drive them the wrong way and you will have to restake them. Put the safety on "Safe" and remove the rear pin first and the bolt catch and spring(watch the spring, it will jump out on you).
Re installation is basically the reverse, front pin first and don't drive it in too far or the bolt catch will drag on it. Tapered end of the pins go in first. You may need to adjust the bolt catch release tail where it contacts the bolt catch, a little can go a long way here, it doesn't take much.
Check safety function when complete.

Timney includes some good directions. Follow them. And be extra careful when driving out the bolt stop pin, it is very easy to drive out all the way and then its a PITA to get that pin back installed. Ask me how I know... :rollseyes:

Is there more than one kind?

Just kidding. Lots of us precision guys only use red. On everything, literally every bolt screw and thread on my rifle. We just adjust how much we put on different bolts.

I think most would tell you blue, which is probably fine... But like I said, I only use red.

That said... If you have the flat head screw driver action screws... Either replace them with torx first, or don't use red. The flat head screw driver won't break red free easily.

What "Bolts" are you referencing?
The trigger is held in place by pins.
If you are referencing the action screws, do not Loctite them. The rifle can be "tuned" to a degree by varying the torque slightly.
Besides, go ahead and break an action screw off in the action. You ain't gonna be happy.

Sorry for my poor language of screws vs bolts. Yes I was speaking of the "action screws". I'm glad you chimed in because that was my next step. And yes breaking any type of screw, bolt, nut, etc is very frustrating! Thanks again. Nice simple job and now time to go live. Yippee!
