View Full Version : 9mm, some very basic questions (not covered in the other 9mm thread...)

I did read through the other thread, just wanted to make that clear. ;) My situation is this: I want to build another AR but I already have one in 5.56, am interested in another caliber. Had thought about 7.62 x 39 because ammo is cheap, but all the stuff I read about problematic magazines made me shy away from that - I don't want to spend several hundred bucks on something that doesn't work. So now I'm thinking 9mm since I have a couple of Glocks (17 and 23 w/9mm conversion barrel.) So my questions are on the 9mm AR platform itself. First of all, does the 9mm AR use the direct gas impingement of the 5.56 version or is it straight blowback? Reason I ask is that I know other 9mm carbines are straight blowback with an unlocked bolt. Also on the other 9mm thread I was looking at pictures of the bolt and it doesn't look like that bolt rotates, but maybe I'm not looking at it right? Next question, other than a 9mm upper, what else is needed? I know there's a magazine block to take the smaller mag but is there a separate magazine release or does it use the same one as the 5.56 version? Final question, are there any "CO Legal" < 15 rd magazines that will work in these? Thanks in advance.

After I did all my research about 9mm uppers, I ended up with a .22LR upper AND a .300 BO upper. Just a thought.

NO on 15 rd 9mm AR mags. There's a smith in CT who does, or was doing mag, well adaptions to allow use of G mags. I went the sten mag / olympic upper way. At the time sten mags were $5 per.

Lone Wolf R&D manufacturers AR lowers that use Glock magazines. Double Diamond shows them on their webb site but has them as "unavailable" I believe the Lone Wolf lower uses the Colt style 9mm upper. I don't believe that anyone is making a gas operated upper, they are all blowback.

Olympic Arms is also listing a complete Glock mag carbine on theirs site-
http://www.olyarms.com/shop/rifles/ar-15-pistol-caliber-models/k9-gl.html

It looks like both of the above will take 15 round Glock mags.

Straight blowback and doesn't rotate. Another option is a magwell and converted UZI mags.

If you wanted to go with a larger caliber, Bazooka Bros. makes pistol caliber Gas impingement ARs in the following calibers.

45 ACP, 45 Super, 460 Rowlands, 10 mm, 7.62x25 and 45win. Mag.
And they sell complete upper, complete lowers or stripped lowers for the same calibers.

The most common 9mm upper systems, Colt pattern or Olympic pattern, are blowback, with no gas system at all.

There are direct impingement 9mm uppers, but they can be a bit ammo picky and problematic, given how little gas the 9mm cartridge generates. The 45 and 40 DI versions are much more reliable and less ammo-dependent.

No matter the upper you choose, in order to use Glock mags, you'll need a mag block or a dedicated Glock mag lower. The mag blocks are no longer made or generally commercially available so far as I know, so getting one involves finding one used or commissioning custom work.

I have a Double Diamond Lower that takes Colt Mags, paired with a Rock River 9mm Upper. I went with the dedicated 9 upper only because it does not have the hole drilled for the gas tube. Its not a huge deal, but keeps the blowback from throwing out into the handguard / barrel. Just a preference thing.

As stated above, using Glock mags is going to require a dedicated glock lower. Double Diamond makes a great one, But I think their lead times are crazy now. Also, glock mags will also require you to 'fit' your bolt to the mags. The feed lips on a glock mag are higher than they are on a colt mag, and require you to take some material off your bolt to avoid excessive wear.

If you're interested in taking a look at one and ideas, I can meet you up at Bowers sometime, since it says you are located in Englewood.

For anybody that is in love with the DDLES lower..... DO NOT ORDER ONE FROM THEIR WEBSITE!!

Personally owned(here, ar15, sturm...) is your ONLY source. Riflegear.com had some, but DDLES is out of the game.

The company is defunct and the owner is being indicted.

More info here..... http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_15/600709_DDLES_Update___Spoke_to_Jon.html

if you have an opportunity to get one, DO IT!... The fit and finish is great, and it looks pretty cool. Mine has been 100% from day one. But be very careful who you get it from.

A 9mm AR has been on my wishlist for awhile. I wanted a DDLES lower but after reading stories on how far they are back up, I decided to wait. One day I will put one together.

ThunderSquirrel, that thing is tits!

That is really disappointing. My experience with them was fantastic. They were very knowledgeable, always answered the phone, responded to emails, and my lower was shipped within weeks of the order. Granted, that was years ago, my serial number is under 100...

Quality wise, the lower is great, and still running like a champ after all the abuse I've given it.

Maybe this is a good place for this. I am working on developing a lower to replace the DDLES. Same principal, just a little nicer looking if you ask me. I am going to start talking to some local machine shops to see if they have any interest in producing them along with their current lineup. So if you own a shop, posses an FFL and are interested feel free to PM me.

I am still in the prototyping phase for now, and it will be quite a while before I can go much further. It is a ton of work to take an idea, design it, prototype it, test it, find a problem, solve the problem, implement design changes build another prototype and repeat.

I still have some kinks to work out, but here are some screen shots of REV 3.

Why not offer an 80% version ? Once the magwell is cut, everything else is standard AR 80% jig work.

I really wish the DD was still available or someone could reproduce it. I Really like the dedicated (smaller) magazine area. All the lowers with the full size AR 556 mag wells look like an after thought. That pic that ThunderSquirrel posted makes me drool.

+1. I know dickfer about 9mm ARs, but my first thought was if you are going to produce a lower, might as well mock up an 80% jig and produce those as well.

Damn you've had that plan since I let you fondle mine for a few years. Although I can't really talk I still haven't shot mine. Should have a piece of paper anyday now that will give me permission to though.

I totally dig your lower, except the full size magwell. That is one of the major things that go me turned onto the DDLES lower was the smaller size built to fit the smaller 9mm round.

I'll post up pics of mine once I have a little piece of paper that says I can put the pieces together. Also waiting on another little piece of paper that'll let me turn down the volume on it, but that one is still probably 5-6 months out.

Does anyone have experience with Olympic Arms AR-15 in 9mm that uses glock mags? Every once in awhile I see them pop up for $900+/- but cannot find enough info to see if they are worth it or not. I just can't decide if it would be more beneficial to build a 9mm AR use a traditional mag block or buy a factory 9mm AR.

I need a moment to myself after seeing that. Beautiful.

I REALLY wish the DDLES was still available. Every other AR 9 just doesn't look right when compared to that.

Yea I'm totally OCD and the giant mag well with tiny mag sticking out of it has always drove me nuts. I'm glad I got this when I did.
