Have you seen the commercials from that law firm doing a class action suit against a mesh manufacturing company ?
You may want to research that first.

I'd really press your doctor for as much info as possible with the pro's & con's, the major what-if's, the recovery scenarios for the different treatment methods, as well as the overall cost estimates. Sorry you have to have this done, I've a few friends who have had hernia surgeries, and while I can't remember the specifics, I know it wasn't fun for them or simple. Good luck.

That's the old stuff apparently
I tried to talk to the surgen but he was super nonchalant like it was no big deal

If that is his attitude, find another surgeon. He should be open to as many stupid questions as you want to ask, if not run!

The doctor or surgeon should tell you everything that is going on, and at the end of his talk, you should not have any questions - meaning he has answered everything you could question.
I honestly didn't realize I could switch surgeons should I talk to my gp who gave the referral??

had two, on two different occasions a few years apart.....its been upwards of 30 years or so, so I don't remember specifics and they've likely gotten better at it, but I seem to recall being down for a few days, maybe a week....

Yeah we aren't to Nationalized Health care yet and Death panels.
I would say that you should be scrutinizing the guy that is going to cut you open... just saying... It is a little more important than buying a used car.
My dad had a double repaired with mesh. He recovered very quickly. The hard part is remembering not to exert yourself because you feel better pretty quickly even though you've still got some mending to do.

In 2004 I donated a kidney to a friend. This was done via through my belly button area. In about 2009 I developed a incisional herina. Eventually by 2010 my intestines burst through the opening. Prior to the burst I was sick because my intestines were clogged. My wife would describe it as grey look. I aged quite a bit etc. I finally went to the doctor and I got a hernia repair. It hurt worse than the kidney donation too be honest. I got the mesh and 52 pins holding it together. I was in the hospital for 4 days. The reason for my stay was because of pain. I was also over medicated for pain and stopped breathing of all things. When I got out I dealt with fevers for about three weeks. Thankfully 4 years later I have no problems, however the mesh is always detected by TSA when I travel and I am patted down. All I can say is hang in there. Dont rush your healing time.
I'd be looking for a different surgeon.
Had a dbl inguinal hernia surgery, then a few years later a single inguinal hernia surgery ... all with the mesh.
Hurts the first day or two pretty swell...after that u are sore for a few more days.
Walk each day...and have some one with you for when u tire out to help ya home/couch, frozen peas or corn are a must for a lil bit. Dont laugh, it hurts.
Take it easy for 2 or 3 weeks...you're not quite as healed as u think.
No issues with the mesh after almost 10yrs...

Never had one; but I had over 6 reconstructive surgeries on my leg after falling over 60'. Every doctor working on me got a dozen questions; and they all took the time to discuss it; no matter how many questions I had.
i would have to agree with uncle Dave on this.
I had it a few years back. Was down for a few days. Was pretty hard to stand strait up and walk around. Your gonna want your meds and figure about a week before you really can do much.

I had a surgery where the mesh helped to put things back in their proper place. I had to go back and have it changed. I was a 20-something 'Joe' that didn't give a crap the way that I do now.
These are two of his reviews it freaked me out
March 2008 Simple gall bladder removal - missed a bile duct (he chose NOT to do intraoperative choleangiogram). I went septic, into a 30 day coma and almost died several times. Other surgeons had to go back in a couple more times. Took a year to sort-of-recover from the ordeal. Ended my career as a floor nurse, tried working a desk job, am now applying for Social Security Disability. He's a nice enough man, but his surgery radically changed my life, my finances and my future for the worse
Accidently perforated bowel. Did not repair. He admitted that he messed up & that he did not know how to make me well. I would have died if I had not changed doctors. I was in Critical Care for 2 months & rehab 1 week, 8 surgeries, still open wounds on stomach 2 years later & permanently disabled, plus the financial hardship.

I had the umbilical hernia surgery a couple of years ago. I was up and moving about six hours after the surgery (took a nap) They had anesthetic taped to me to help with the pain initially, but I removed it after 24 hours. By the next day, I was able to move around without too much trouble and only using Tylenol to manage the pain.
Key for me was I kept moving around, which kept things from tightening up. When I did sit down, I sat in our kitchen table chairs, which are a little higher than the couch. Biggest challenge was getting off the toilet given its height.

How long until you were back to 100%?

I was back to work in two days but took another month before I started working out again. After about a week, I started stretching the abdomen area but nothing crazy. Simple things like windmills, twists, standing back arches. Sitting up straight is another key. I felt like the mesh naturally wanted to contract, so I had to remember to stay erect as much as possible and no slouching.
Every once in a while I was reminded that the mesh was in there with what felt like a slight burning sensation, particularly when I twisted quickly. This lasted for about six months after the surgery. I could do situps and run all day without a problem, but twist funny and there it was. More of a nuisance than anything else.
Other down side is your outie turns back to an innie and lint get stuck in there.

Had Bilateral done with mesh about 12 yrs ago....??
No big deal. Off work for about 4 days. Back full time after that but was a bit limited cause they went though the abs. Was painting cars then in a auto body shop. Pretty active job. Back to "normal" in about 2 weeks.

Had one repaired last year, no mesh, no big deal, but doc was emphatic about no lifting of anything more than 10-15 lbs for at least three weeks. Easy to forget after about 4 days. And like others have said, find a surgeon willing to talk to you and answer all your questions.

I had an inguinal hernia about 6 years ago with the mesh, laparoscopic. About two hours after the surgery, I drove myself home and went to bed. It felt as though someone had stuck a stick in my guts and twisted it around a few times. The next day I didn't want to move too much. After a week, I was back to work, but watching my lifting closely. The Dr. informed me I would feel the scar tissue tearing for the next year or so, which in turn would make more scar tissue. I still had tearing three years later. To this day, I can still feel tearing, but it is only when I try and do something stupid.

This is about as routine as a surgery gets. As long as you or a close relative has not had issues with anesthesia there isn't much to worry about
As far as surgeons go, I would much rather have one that is a total dick and is a phenomenal surgeon than one that is super nice but gets nervous during a surgery. This isn't a family practice doc that is supposed to make you feel good about yourself.
I say this from having worked in doctors offices for 8 ish years.

Thanks guys much less nervous about the surgary
I had the exact same surgery a few years ago. Piece of cake. Out-patient. In the hospital for 5 or 6 hours I think and most of that was recovery from anesthesia. A little pain for about a day but I only took one pain pill and tossed the rest. He'll probably put you on extremely light duty for a while though. 6-8 weeks for me I think where I wasn't supposed to lift anything of significant weight. So if you actually work for a living ;) you'll need to investigate your short and long term disability or FMLA. The light duty is for the muscle to weave trough the mesh.
Biggest bonus is that you'll have a half circle scar under your belly button that is just 2 lipstick marks from being a smiley face.

one of my buddies just had surgery today for a double hernia
Goin under the knife in 2 hours see y'all on the other side
Prayers going out that God guides the hands of the surgeon and that all goes well!
I just had shoulder surgery yesterday - bad SLAP tear and a bone spur. I guess the recovery isn't so bad when you're enduring a lot of pain before you go in. I've got months of rehab ahead, but I can still work on the computer, which is what I do for a living. Hopefully you'll bounce back quickly and will not be impacted by what you do for a living. Just make sure you follow their guidance so you don't end up undoing the repair.
My surgeon might have been interpreted to be 'nonchalant', but it's more a reflection of the confidence he has in his skill and experience. In my eyes I'm thinking this is a big event...including general anesthesia. In his eyes, this was truly not a challenge. 45 minutes and DONE! They day after the surgery, I think he was right. [Coffee]
Thoughts and prayers, Brother. Here's hoping for a speedy and complete recovery. BTW-hernia surgery is another situation where getting stoned and watching 3 Stooges DVDs may NOT be the best idea...

YO COFI YOU ALRIGHT? ?
What's the 411? He should be out of recovery, in to a room,Or home, if it's outpatient
. Unless his "hernia" surgery, was done down Trinidad way.
might be in a motel room covered in ice missing a kidney....never know

Good call. I hope he drew on himself so they don't accidentally give him the wrong surgery.
He probably never thought his drawing skills would be so important. ;)
If he's like me, he probably contacted family to let them know he's OK, maybe his boss, and figured he'd take the rest of the day off.
I'm all good!
ok so I went in last thing I remember was telling the nurse "I'm feeling the medicine"
then i woke up....lol
little sore now but I'm able to walk around a little I'm wasted on painkillers so let's see how I feel when they wear off
Glad to hear you're doing OK! You'll man-up and handle it, I'm sure.
My anesthesiologist didn't even count me down. I got adjusted square on the table and was then waking up in recovery. Lights off---Lights on. Time flies when you're having surgery, eh?[ROFL1]

Ease in to it breathing like you do supporting your spouse, during labor. Then SCREAM AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE as that Major League Approved baseball sized excrement tears you up like a fish in prison. Allegedly .
Stool softener isn't a wood or leather treatment [Beer]
Still has to be easier than that 1st time dropping the kids off at the pool right after a hemorrhoidectomy.
