Prequel; So two weeks or so ago severe allergies hit me hard from the mowing of the open space right outside my home. 3-4 days later (2 Sundays ago) had to go to the Health clinic at Walgreen's cause of an unproductive cough. Told I had Bronchitis brought on by severe allergies. Steroids, special cough medicine, and inhaler.

This week been feeling much better, not coughing much at all , but ribs and muscles used to breath, cough, sneeze, etc are super sore!

Fast forward to last night.

Laying down to sleep, had to cough but sneezed at the same time................. This feeling I can only describe as a "snapping/popping" in my right side rib cage with the most INTENSE pain I have ever felt in my life, I am no wimp to pain, chronic lower back pain most of my life, but this was OFF the chart!!!

After rolling off the bed onto the floor, screaming in agony, my poor wife, jumping out of bed freaking out, started crying, demanded I go the emergency room.

She drove me at 1am this morning to ER.

2 hours later after some exams, X-Rays, a shot in the ass and some other oral pain killers the ER doctor said I didn't puncture a lung or broke a rib (he explained this has happened before to others) but I pulled a lot of muscles in my rib cage and around my diaphragm. Possibly fracture of a rib cant see that but treating me like a rib fracture, nothing they can do other than time to heal and pain management.

Anyone ever have this happen to them?

Rib injuries suck, and take a long time to heal. Good luck with your recovery.

I assumed it was a collapsed lung when you described the pain. I should be a doctor. [Coffee]

But seriously, I have had bruised ribs before. A guy shot a double leg on me, but then had his arm come up my back. I landed on his arm, and it probably took six weeks before the soreness and tenderness went away. Rib injuries SUCK.

Had 10 broken ribs in January..... Got so much drug in my system I was in a semi comatose state for a month.... yep, ribs hurt like nothing else. So now I can tell my wife that her giving birth to a child is NOTHING compared to the level of pain i experienced... And she agrees.

Doctor might prescribe 100cc of dirt, but since it's only one side and no broken rib, probably only 50cc of dirt.

Whether sarcasm or not that is best medicine just get back up and go. Been walking around standing. Cant sit still anyway, wife keeps nagging me to go to bed but explain sitting or laying down actually hurts more than standing up. Only reason didnt go to work today is not a lot of sleep, wish I could figure out how to sleep standing up???

Ow ow ow, :(

I dont know watching a woman give natural birth might be a slight notch above rib injuries. Only because birth is a prolong intensity of time. Rib pain you can position, move and the severe pain part only lasts a minute before going down.

I am just in a surreal position to tell others why I am in such pain; "yeah, I started to cough and sneeze ..................... "

Story I will be able to tell to my kids, grands kids down the line.

Think about this: A woman will complain about the pain of giving birth, but then 2 years later she wants another one.... Sooo: not so bad after all! I (and most people I know), in the other hand, will never want to break a rib again! ever.

I dont know? wonder if your can pull a muscle around your ribs and you sphincter at the same time, dont think they use the same muscle areas? ......but imagining the pain on both ends is unbearable even to think about.

True, very true. Think your on to something there, so have they (women) been using this excuse of pain with child birth only to garner our sympathy?

Ha ha ha OW! that hurt, stop making me laugh Bert.

Which reminds me after signing into ER, going to visit the nurse for immediate assessment with Triage, she asked the typical questions; do you have allergies, take any daily prescription medications, had any surgeries, use any illicit drugs and the weird one, you and partner doing anything for Birth control. My answers were; seasonal, how this all started, NO, NO, coffee count? and birth control; Yeah, I already have a 5 and 7 year old spawns of hell, best birth control there is, me and mommy never get time alone.

The nurse chuckled pretty good and said; "I know what you mean.........."

The thing I don't get about the whole "Childbirth is top notch pain" or pain being compared to childbirth. My logic is that women usually (not always) have more than one kid. So they are willing to go through it all again. Would any of you go through a broken rib or 10 again willingly? I think not. "We should have another kid dear!", "Don't you want another kid?", and my favorite, "I stopped taking my Birth Control 2 weeks ago." True story!

Yes! It happened to me a few years ago. I developed a cough after having the flu and after a couple of rough days I was in so much pain and could hardly breath my wife took me to the ER. Shots and IV and a sedative to relax me. I had strained and torn some muscles and it was another week before I could breath without pain. The pain was intense and unlike anything I ever experienced before or since. The only thing worse I have experienced is when I had a bout of Shingles two years ago.

You don't get a kid out of broken ribs. If you broke a rib and acquired $500,000, the first thing you would buy would be a pen so you could sign up to do it all over again.

Sucks to hear that, glad my allergies aren't THAT BAD...
On the same note I am dealing with a rib injury too thanks to my 180LB brother slamming me to the ground and sticking his shoulder in my ribs/diaphram for good measure when we were messing around.

My ribs hurt like a mother!
Just today I sneezed, felt over, hit my head on my desk and then to the floor while grabbing my ribs - LITTLE BIT OF DRAMATIZATION

My co-workers came running in thinking something had happened. Nope just an old man getting older.

OLD AGE IS NOT FOR WUSSIES or something like that.

Get well

Yeah found out that somehow the muscles used to breath are also tied into pooping or farting which causes pain as well. I am screwed and cursed to suffer some pain for awhile unless I can stop; sneezing, coughing, hiccuping, farting, bending over in general, and pooping.

UPDATE STARLOG 6-21-14:

Recap; Wednesday morning ER doctor had said that he didn't see any broke ribs, but cant see fractures easily so treated me as having A rib fracture. So ER doctor of course recommended to follow up with Primary Care within 2 days of the emergency visit.

Last night (Friday evening) after supper I had another popping sensation / extreme pain that sent me curling over into a ball.

Luckily I had an appointment this morning with my PCP. Doctor had X rays done again and this time shows very clearly TWO broke ribs, GOD DAMMIT, TWO!

Explains the increase in pain and popping sound I hear now when I shift positions. Doctor suspected that since ER visit just the right stresses and it finally broke.

Upped my dosage of narcotics, added pain patches and muscle relaxers. 4-6 weeks.

FARK!!!!! Just knock me out already!!!!! [Beer]

I've broken/cracked ribs, had shingles, and endured kidney stones. Without exception, every woman that I know that has had kidney stones has said that it's worse than childbirth. I believe them. All of them wanted another child, none of them wanted another kidney stone. I rest my case.

Shingles does suck to an amazing degree, though.

Why would you spend the night at ER if you or others weren't sick?

IIRC he actually had ribs seperate from his spine, or something like that. He went down pretty hard and it sounded incredibly painful.

Broken ribs suck. I just cracked one once and it was miserable.

2 ribs and you are complaining? Try 10.... And be careful with the meds (oxy or whatever they are giving you), they will mess you up more than the actual injury. I cut them after 30 days, went to Alieve only, yes it hurts like hell, but at least I was functioning and it was safe for me to be around firearms again...

wait til you have an impacted gall bladder, and 1-2 of the stones shift /move out of there.

Or wait till your friend @28 came down with lymphoma, then his immune system gave out .

Or be laying in a hospital bed with a broken arm, pissing and moaning , when they wheel in your room mate. Who had the misfortune of being rear ended on his mc, which wasn't as bad as the trident sissy bar proceeding to tear his spinal cord in to multiple pieces.

No matter how bad you think it is, there is someone suffering more than you.

No matter how much pain i am in, i always remember those who never woke up.

FWIW: while on pain killers avoid replying to some stupid flag burners post, it takes 2-3 days to figure out what it was you were arguing about, hypothetically.

First off I think my meaning of this thread has been lost, it sounds like I may be whining and self pity. I know there are many worse thing that could happen and two broken ribs are minor compared to some. I was not looking for a pity party but thanks for the well wishes.

I started this thread because A) tell my tale to see if others have ever had broken ribs because of "coughing" I am still flabbergasted this happened because of that which I have learned I am not the only freak that this has happened to. :)

B) Just shooting the shit and a platform for me to vent and get it off my chest so to speak. Pun intended.............

I have more things to think about on my mind, like trying to quit smoking........................... so if I vent off radically just keep that in mind. [Coffee]

There was a couple threads I replied to and then realized they were brought back from the dead '13 and then disappeared. At least I think they did, not sure now???

The drugs are making things manageable at the moment, but half the time I feel totally out of it, no concentration at all or at times nothing but anxiety and feeling restless. Sucks cause I went straight back to work and didn't take time off. The cocktail of drugs the doc has me on i wont be on for long. ruthabagah stated it above, the oxycodone messes you up. I have another follow up on the 2nd so two weeks at best. The thing I find that really works is these "pain" patches. Overnight I don't take my Oxy just use these patched and don't feel too bad in the morning. Apparently they were used primarily for those who have shingles.

There's no biological imperative to break your ribs. The drive to have children is really strong in some women, and they have to decide if the pain is worth the result.
