View Full Version : Do you have a safe queen?

You know that gun you never shoot, or plan to never shoot.
You know that one that just keeps increasing in value or was so expensive that you don't dare shoot it for fear it may get a scratch.
Almost all of mine were accidents.
Guns I purchased because I like unique things and the values have skyrocketed.

I have a few safe queens. Here's a couple.
An older saddle ring Winchester Model 94 trapper in 38 special/357 magnum. Had to put it away when I saw current value. It's in 95+% condition
Thompson Center Hawken Silver Elite. (yeah, that's right... I get offers every time I open my safe with someone present. Most don't even know what it is)
Original 10/22 International (you might need to look that one up too.)
Mini 14 with factory wood folding stock (think A-team)

What do y'all got stashed?

I have guns that I never really shoot, but only because I can't afford it and usually only shoot matches.

For the longest time I had a 1943 Colt 1911A1 still in the Kraft box and looked unissued/unfired. Paid a bundle for it from the guy who originally bought it for $17 back in the early 60s. One day, I took it out of the safe and fondled it as usual, only this time I loaded both mags, one of which was still in the brown wax paper. I loaded them with ammo from a box of WWII vintage Winchester ammo. I shot both mags through that gun and it was a great feeling and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then, I cleaned the gun, put it back in the box, and sold it on GunBroker for about 4.5 times what I paid.

Now I don't have a gun I won't shoot. I went through that "this is too nice/collectable to shoot" faze. Now, if I want to shoot something, regardless of how nice/old/collectable/rare it is, I shoot it. Maybe not a lot, but I'll shoot it.

Then again, I also don't care about holster wear on a nice carry gun.

I have an old WW2 era flare gun that never leaves the safe if that counts.

Several I've out away for collectors purposes. One for my son I had engraved when he was born that will be his first gun gift.

Most of mine seem to be safe queens thanks to a busy work schedule.

I do have one in particular that hasn't been fired in over fifteen years. It isn't worth anything but it has great sentimental value. It's just a single shot 410 shotgun. Just don't really have any need or desire to shoot it.

I also have a 7mag that hasn't been fired more than ten rounds and hasn't been out of the safe in over ten years. I just don't hunt any more and have no desire to plink with it.

I don't have the disposable income to buy such luxuries as collectible safe queen or ultra rare firearms. Wish I did..... Heck I haven't even replaced the losses from the "Great Floods" of 2013. Maybe someday when my Red-neck retirement plan pays out, I'll be able to afford such pretties.

No safe queens. I like to use the tools I own. Maybe if I had some serious cash I'd invest in some collectibles, but that ain't happening anytime soon.

My dad has one of these: http://ww2.rediscov.com/spring/VFPCGI.exe?IDCFile=/spring/DETAILS.IDC,SPECIFIC=13122,DATABASE=objects

He grew up hunting rabbits with it (for sport, not for food... There wasn't much left of a rabbit after shooting it with this cannon). We still go out and shoot it together every couple of years. Last fall he had a gunsmith inspect it for safety since it is so old and the guy was very impressed by its condition. Said it was probably worth 12-15k. We still plan on shooting it this year when I go back there.

I have a baby safe queen... I've only had it for 7 years and I shot it a bunch, but not recently. It's a Winchester 94 Centennial commemorative edition in .30-30. Pretty basic, maybe worth a little more than I paid for it, and it's honestly one of my favorite guns... I just usually don't take it out to the range with me. Maybe next trip I will. :)

^^^ this applies to me too. I have a Ruger 10/22 that shoot when I can. My father gave it to me and I value it more than all the rest of my other firearms, which I will pass on to my kid.

the results are going to be skewed. Im sure alot of you say that you dont have any safe queens. But, if you only have a handful of guns I could see that you would shoot them all. Maybe someday you will have way too many to shoot and or you will have some for investment, some to pass onto your heirs, etc.

That's pretty much where I'm at, only a handful. Don't get to shoot much, so when I do I try to shoot my carry as often as possible. With the exception of my AR, the rest all have sentimental value anyway (not that it would keep me from shooting them).

Yep, I have a C96 that will remain dormant for the same reason. Amazing tooling on these early auto pistols!4627346275

A saddle ring Winchester 97 made in 1916. Hasn't been fired since 1944, but hell, it might take a trip sometime. Then a 1873 in 32-20 that was given to my family in Oregon by an Indian fighter up there because he felt sorry for them. And a wooden barrel musket that appears to be an 1858 Springfield.

I shoot the hell out of everything else.

Not intentionally. I had a few that I bought and just never got around to shooting them. They weren't particularly rare or had sentimental value. Since I didnt use them, I sold them off. All the firearms I now own got used….

Only if it has never been shot, otherwise, I don't care how collectable it is I'll shoot it. I currently only have two, Winchester John Wayne 94 in 32-40 and Glock 25th Anniversary G17 that I won't shoot. My S&W 1877 Baby Russian 38 has not been shot by me but if I can find ammo for it I would try it out. It is important for me that all of mine are fully functioning even if I don't intend to carry them.

No safe queens...all were converted to pawns. I have a few I have not shot in a long time because I have something that replaced them, but none are really pristine.

The Browning Golden Clays is the closest. I shoot Sporting Clays maybe 2 or 3 times a year and that is all I use it for.

Only an old American side by side that was well used and abused as it came down to me through the family. When i have it put back on face it will go out hunting with me yearly. Although i do not preserve much of anything i own i do have to say thank you to the people that do. Without those people i wold not get to see so much that perks my interest.

I have some wall hangers, nothing real valuable, but the are interesting. Cross lock 1850s sxs 11 ga., 1830s muzzleloading sxs shotgun, and a few others that found homes in a safe or museum.

I have a few that are for hunting specifically, as well as a couple redundant ones just on hand as spares and for family members whenever they want to go shooting with me, but nothing that is collectable or remarkably valuable... the closest thing I guess I have to that would be my Kimber Ultra CDP II. It's in 95% condition and has at most a couple hundred rounds through it, but I decided I don't like to carry it for a number of reasons, but I love it nonetheless, so won't get rid of it unless times really got tough.
