So I am more than likely going to purchase a 1972 vehicle. My question is, will I have to have it tested at the air care place? I will be purchasing a collector car tag. Between trying the 'cipher the adams county and Colorado websites I'm totally confused. Thanks for the help, I will call adams county tomorrow I'm just trying to get piece of mind tonight.
Thanks.

Pretty sure it requires the 2-speed idle test.

Yes, Make sure you have a new gas cap. That one gets a 40% fail rate, up here.

Damn it. It won't pass with the current engine set up. Too big of a cam, etc...
Register it in a non emission county?

Find a shop with a gas analyzer. Sometimes they can do things like adjust timing and such that will get it to pass.

Of you bought it in Colorado, it is on the seller for it to pass emissions. I can't quote the CRS, but it is posted in the emissions places.

Correct. I mentioned that to HCWT. The flip side is he can try 5X before applying for an exemption.

Did you have it tested and it failed?
What did it fail for?
I had a 1971 Small block chevy pass and it had a big cam and glass packs.

-10 brodix Aluminum heads 63cc
Holly 750
Headers
Flowmaster series 40 mufflers

A friend would make sure it passes.
Unless something has changed when I registered my 66 Impala with collector plates in 2011. I did not have to do emissions and I am in a emissions county. 35 years and old should be exempt. But I not 100% sure, just based on my personal experience
Btw - Scott did you get my PM about HVAC work?

Last collector car I registered I had to pass emissions for the initial registration but not after that.
I have a friend that works at emissions. I'll try to remember to ask him tomorrow. Is there a specific question I should ask, like about a model year being exempt or something?

From DMV.Org
NOTE: While collector vehicles were previously exempt from emissions testing in the areas required, a law was passed into affect in August 2013 that now requires emissions inspections for vehicles registered as collector items. Please review the Collector Plate Regulations Change for more information.
Hate to think what the next change in the law will bring.

Spoke with someone at Adams county dmv this morning. As long as I get a 5 year collector tag then I am exempt from emissions testing.
I have three vehicles with collector tags on them. Passing emissions on a pre-75 vehicle is rather easy if it is tuned correctly (lean and/or over advanced = high NOx or rich and/or bad ignition = high hydrocarbons). Your limits are really high, but if you fail on one, adjust and retest. I had to pass the sniffer test on my first registration, but never again. I am surprised Adams doesn't require testing on the first registration. However, the law did change, which eliminated the 25 year rule to pre '75. The renewals are every five years, and the cost is substantially less because the Ritter tax isn't applied to each year. If you are concerned or if you find out that the test is required, register it with a friend or family member in a non-emissions area and transfer it back to your county later.
No emissions required if you buy the collector plates right off the bat. Don't do a temp or anything. Just go in with the title and get the collector plates and you'll never do any emissions. I just did this last month. However, all plates except the green/whites are now mailed to you. So they'll give you a temp tag while you wait for them to show up in the mail.
They told me it was to reduce inventory at EVERY location but I also think it's to prevent false addresses being used.
There is a lot of contradicting info in this thread. Basically, the DMV screwed classic car people with the recent changes. I've gotten three different interpretations from three different DMV clerks.
The following is my understanding of the new rules. Feel free to correct.
1976 is now the magic number, not 20 years old. If you have/get collector plates and let them lapse you are then stuck getting emissions testing every other year. I haven't heard of bypassing temp tag to avoid testing. Sounds interesting. When I registered my '76 truck, in Boulder Co. prior to 8/13, I had to pass emissions once and never again.
<Theoretically> Registering the vehicle (at a friend's house) in a non emissions county and then update the information at a later date. This would avoid emissions all together. </Theoretically>

I have registered 2 classics in the past 12 months. Neither one saw the emissions station. I bought the car, took the title to the DMV, bought classic plates and I was done. The second one (last month) was when I found out they no longer stock anything but green/whites and they gave me a temp tag to get by until the plates showed up. At least that's how it is in Douglas Co. :shrugs:
^Good to know for the future.
I was under the impression you had to pass emissions before you could register and plate the vehicle.

I think the DMV people don't even know what us supposed to happen. I was told they had to pass one time and one time only as long as you kept the plates current. I bought 5 year plates.
