I have a 2002 Wrangler with 210k miles that is making some noises in the brakes/drivetrain that I would like to get figured out before I get stranded halfway between here and Steamboat where I travel for work a bit.

Thanks!

mechanics, or techs;) ? is it happening when you apply the brakes ? which side, front / rear, hard to tell?

In my professional opinion I would look under the car and fix what is making the noise.

Have to hang on the bottom while someone else is driving like Keanu in Speed to see what is going on..

It seems to happen when I brake hard and come to a complete stop. When I start rolling again there is a bit of a rubbing/grinding noise that I thought was coming from the back. I originally thought the rear drums were worn and maybe the brakes were rubbing/hanging so I redid the brakes and replaced the drums.. still makes same noise. I also occasionally get a cracking/snapping/grinding sound for a second or two from I think the front left. No noises during regular driving.

The real question should be........How much am I willing to invest in fixing this hard breaking noise issue on a vehicle worth $4000 or less?

You can easily spend $400 - $500 in parts (Not including labor) in swapping rotors, pads, calipers, and wheel bearings to try and resolve this issue. Is it worth it? Only you know the answer to that.

Does it make the same noises in 4wd? If I had to guess (not hearing it), I'd be inclined to look at the u-joints in the front axle, also check the u-joints in the rear driveshaft. Obviously, inspect the front rotors and pads.

Sounds like time for new brakes.

I don't know any mechanics in Boulder but highly recommend 1st Street Garage in Nederland.

Diagnosing over the internet is futile. My wife complains about her car making "strange" noises when it's just the AC compressor cycling.

Thats awesome. My wife could be dragging a metal trash can down the road wedged under her vehicle and probably wouldn't notice.

Does it have limited slip diffs? when was the last time the oil was changed ? and was the proper additive added ?

Huge shout out for JMBD2112, he works over at Xtreme Auto Repair in Parker. Those guys fixed my 1993 Pontiac Grand Am and did absolutely phenomenal work. I couldn't of been more pleased. They were more than fair with me on cost and kept me in the loop the whole time on the repairs.

vise grips & hacksaw, with both 10 & 14t bi-metal blades. If you're TEAR 1 you should have a Map gas setup too.

Did you readjust the rear shoes after you redid the rear brakes? Or did you slide the drums on and slap on the tires? Check your parking brake, and see if it is engaging Around 5 to 7 clicks.

Did youa

By how many miles you are at, it might be time to start saving up for shocks, and suspension bushings also.

Sigh.

Get jack stands. Put vehicle up in air. Check for play in wheels. Pull wheels off. Check brakes for metal to metal or anything else wrong. Crawl under and check drive line for any play or issues.

Grinding or metal to metal noise is going to leave signs. Squeeling not so much.
