View Full Version : The lengths we'll go to protect someone from themselves
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/06/28/326410475/golden-gate-bridge-board-approves-funding-for-suicide-barrier
The Golden Gate Bridge's board of directors approved $76 million in funding to install a net system that would prevent people from committing suicide by jumping off the bridge.
...
the money will come from a combination of bridge tolls and federal and state coffers.
...
since the bridge opened in 1937, at least 1,600 people have jumped to their deaths. A record 46 committed suicide last year.
Congratulations you and I are paying for nets to save people who jump off the golden gate bridge at a cost of 1.6M for each that died last year or 48K for anyone who has ever died. No discussion of ongoing maintenance costs or how much it'll cost to fish each person out of the nets.
Personally I think they should put a diving board at the center of the bridge. (and of course a lawyer note about how using this may be hazardous to your health) Do these people really think that because they cannot jump off that bridge a suicidal person will just say "Oh well, there goes that plan. Might as well go on living." No they are going to find another bridge.
What stops the people from jumping off the nets?

If they are that far gone (mentally) let em jump. That's better than taking a swan dive off a highway bridge and crashing through someone's windshield. It's the shitz for someone to give up their life in an effort to save someone determined to take their own life.
I see a new sport. Bridge jumping. I want the T'shirt concession.
That's not right. Why deprive the fish?

Gotta be Cash only, or have an ATM machine on site.
Hey buddy, want me to hold that ipad for you ? And here's your changes, good luck.
They should be happy they are jumping off the bridge, one less death by suicide gun shot. Everybody wins!!!

It's because a survey of survivors showed that over 80% of them regretted it immediately after jumping over the rail.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I hope people just start hanging themselves from the bridge now.
Wonder how many more people will jump now for fun. Since the nets will be there to save them.

So once again the .gov has created a sense of entitlement among jumpers. Like usual there's no out of pocket on their end to cover expenses, typical.
Since the vote for a secession failed in CO. Looks like it's time to stake a claim in NE CO. Cause that shit is rolling down hill fast.
I don't get it. Have all the other problems been solved? My other question is the price, doesn't that sound a bit overpriced?

If it saves one life, isn't it worth it.

Excellent.
This net is a stupid idea, sharks gotta eat too.
BTW - a friend of mine committed suicide when I was 18. He never asked for help, never brought his issues to light, just took a 44 Mag Ruger Blackhawk and shot himself through the head. A couple days later I find out he was stressed over money and other stuff. I would have helped him out but he didn't ask. What he did was stupid and selfish, he made his choice and it destroyed his parents. Life is tough sometimes and suicide is an easy way out, what a waste.
How about a chain link fence along each side the entire length then barbed wire along the top. If they can't get over the edge they can't jump. Probably too cheap, can't line anybody pockets doing that.
I think they just want to stop jumpers so they will use guns to off themselves and bump the stats up to get rid of evil guns. It is San Francisco after all.

Fist jumper who survives but gets injured will sue. "Shoulda had a better net there that wouldn't have hurt me....."
Well, apparently it will take three years to get it installed. As such, anyone that has been procrastinating had better schedule things accordingly!
Here's a few that instead of just talking, actually got up and did:

Therein lies the real reason for this boondoggle. Protect the image of San Francisco under the guise of saving lives.
I could be wrong, and haven't put much thought into it, but I feel like this is kind of like mass shootings. The more people hear/see/know about jumping off the bridge, the more they are likely to do so themselves.
It does seem that the insane rule California.

And it will go WAY over budget and no one will go to jail for the graft.
They put a chain link fence up in late 90 early 2000 to stop people from jumping. They should just start charging them an arm and a leg and people might think twice or do something else???

I was against the net until reading this:
"A tearful Dana Barks of Napa, who lost his son, Donovan, to suicide on the bridge in 2008, said after the vote that he was almost speechless. 'A lot of people have done so much incredible work to get this accomplished,' he said."He rose from his knees and shared a tearful embrace with Sue Story of Rocklin, whose son Jacob jumped off the bridge in 2010.
" 'We did it!' Story said. 'It's no longer the Bridge of Death anymore.' "
Now I'm all for it based on that entirely emotional argument void of all logic.
I say go a step further and either lower the bridge of death or just remove it altogether. We have to end the senseless violence of the Bridge of Death.

For God's sake, don't tell the potential jumpers there are other bridges to jump from. We'll have to put nets around everything over 10 feet high.

And then someone will miss the net or fall anyway and their family/estate will sue. Typical.
So, the bridge took poor little Donovan's life?
Sorry for the man's lose but no one and nothing is to blame but the kid.
An average of 21 people a year have jumped since '37. Guess I don't see how a net is cost effective or a deterrent. Someone will make a bundle on it though.
The absence of logic is astounding. "oh wait, there is a net, I guess I won't kill myself today because jumping off this bridge is my lifelong dream and there is just no other way that works for me, guess I am stuck with living" ...stupid F****** people!
