View Full Version : Educate me on selling stocks over the weekend

I know zero about stocks or anything about how the markets work. I have a little bit of stock from an ESPP program I opted into at an old company because they sold it to us at a good discount. I've been sitting on it for years, and it's never done much. At the moment, the price is about double what I paid for it, so I've decided just to dump it and maybe buy some cool new toys with the cash.

If I log into Etrade and trade all these shares on a weekend, while the markets are closed, what price do I get for them? Does the trade execute when the markets open, and is that price going to be different from what it closed at on Friday? Should I just wait until Monday and trade it while the markets are open if the price is still good?

The prices will open lower or higher depending on if there was any relevant news over the weekend on the stocks you plan on trading. Wait till Mondayor possabaly Tuesday to see what kind of stable price you can get. Remember markets (equities) open on EST so adjust accordingly.

With Etrade, you should be able to set stop-loss orders so that you can make sure you don't buy higher than you want.
