View Full Version : What did you do at the range lately?
As a spin-off of this thread, https://www.ar-15.co/threads/87717-What-did-you-do-in-the-reloading-room-today I thought a "What did you do at the range today" might be cool. After all this is a site about firearms and we are shooters right?
I went to the range with a Revolver and a Bolt Gun, a Smith and Wesson 929 and an Accuracy International PSR. I shot a little bit of revo, maybe 150-200 rounds and then headed over to the rifle range.
I just got a new Bartlien 8 twist barrel in 6CM for it. I got lucky as my old pet load worked just fine. Then I yanked the barrel and swapped it over to 300 Win Mag (4-5 minutes tops to change calibers) for some load development. The first load I tried, 70.0 gns of H-1000 under a Berger 230 gn Hybrid put 5 rounds just under 3/8 at 100 yards. And Tim says this load development stuff is hard... Recoil was a lot less than I had thought it would be. Now to load up 20 more to see how they do at distance. Hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday. Might shoot the 300 this Sunday in Raton.
Took my three daughters 8-15 and one's friend to the pawnee. Shot 1ar, one 10/22, one 308 bolt, one 20 guage, a glock, and a 22 pistol. Shot paper and steel and everyone was safe and had fun.
Started off the day fishing with the two younger girls. It was a good day.

IDPA yesterday, no range time today but my granddaughters helped me sort some cans of 38spl/9mm brass after we got back from the school playground.
Placed first in my class and division at a local IDPA match. As a surprise after the match, I was able to chrono a few of my reloads. My 180 gr .40s are averaging around 870 fps, which is plenty for IDPA, and a hair under Major power factor for USPA. From what I understand anyway.

Ran an ass-load of test loads through my 7-300 WSM, and figured out that I can go a LOT hotter than what I had thought at first, the rifle currently weighs in at only 9 1/2 lbs so my shoulder is sore as shit now. It's grouping most everything real well, but I'm definitely showing more speed from Retumbo, H1000, and RL25, vs the faster burning powders.
Then ran a couple test loads through my AR looking for a decent Long range load for it, and have it narrowed down to a couple could be winners, final testing on those next weekend.
Then confirmed the performance I'm looking for out of my new barrel burning load for my 260. A 123 gr Lapua moving out the business end at 3155 fps with an SD of 4.3, should do nicely. I'll double check them out at distance on the next range trip just to make sure, but so far at 300 yds they're still right at 1/2 moa.

I've got a can with separate baggies of different ammo. I think I gave the 10mm to DFBrews because he asked first. I guess you can be next on the list.

Ran 20 rounds of 45 ACP over the Chrono just to check the velocity, was hitting everything low at PPGC Steel Match last Friday. Had an avg of 832 fps using 230 gr LRN (Bayou Bullets) over 5.5 gr Unique & WSP; some room to grow there I believe. Not much experience with Cast Bullets.

Well played. Almost got coffee out the nose.
I packed up to head off and did a double check of ammo. Only had 23 rounds of .260 which is what I was planning to shoot so cancelled.
Ran the Glock 19 (gen 1 no less, still running like a champ xxxxxxxx rounds later). Did the F.A.S.T. drill and a few others from http://pistol-training.com/drills.
Fired 50 rounds out of an S&W 649 I had, just slow fire. Still learning how to run a revolver.
Saturday I went and gathered a WHOLE metric F ton of data on a couple of rifles (long long guns, SBRs, etc.). MV suppressed and un-suppressed, POI shifts suppressed and un-suppressed, 100/300/500 drops. Reset zero's across multiple rifles to be suppressed. Confirmed across multiple shooters that a certain 10.5" BCM upper w/ a 1/7 SS does NOT like 55g XM193. Confirmed that another rifle needs a SSA-E quite badly.
I shoot a few rounds a Whistling Pines Sat, boy did they ever have a good turnout.

I ran the range at Boy Scout camp last Monday night and all day Tuesday, assisted with instruction on Thurs & Fri. We got 40 of 62 Scouts to pass their qualifications for the merit badge including 2 that you would never have thought would pass, probably have 2 or 3 that would have passed if they'd bothered to come up Thursday night or Friday morning.
The one I feel best about had groups all over the place Tuesday so that night we were getting his position stable, trying to get him to follow through, etc. Asked him what his sight picture was like and he said he couldn't see the target. It turned out he had a blind spot in his left eye AND his eyesight in the left was 20/50 or so.
He wanted a scope -- no can do for the merit badge BUT I got the rifle instructor to bring his reading glasses Thursday and had the boy put them on. Groups were still kind of loose but tight enough to score -- surprise, surprise, it's a wonder what you can do when you can actually see the target rather than guess where it's at ...
Lost my dope book, probably fell out somewhere along the way. Bought something nicer that wasn't a crappy 25cent spiral flip book thing. Guess I get to start over. Maybe this is a good time to reconfig some of the guns anyway.

Took the Daughter out to Baker Draw this morning and let her shoot her new Ruger SR-22 until the wind got bad and started blowing dust in our eyes. She went through a 225 round can and once she started to get the hang of the trigger pull her groups dropped dramatically. Once her groups closed up from 10" to 3" off hand I zeroed it for her and she closed it up to 2" from a rest at 20'. She still needs to practice trigger pull and I will work with her on some dry fire practice. She wants to go again next weekend and shoot her Ruger again and then get back behind my Bushy. It was a good time, she took instruction well and was good with her range safety discipline.

Haven't been in months ... I can't really afford to replace any ammo I use and I'm still not convinced that it's safe to shoot up ammo as its availability could go away at any time (and we could end up in a situation where we NEED ammo at any time ... the world's a scary place).
Thing is I just inherited an 8-1/3" 686 Target that desperately needs to be shot, so I may have to risk some .357mag.
Load development all day Saturday. I'm fortunate to have a pal with property who shoots. I load a round, walk out the door and shoot over the chrono, and go load another one. It would have taken days to do what I did if I'd had to drive between home and the range every time.
Shot Friday, went through two boxes of WMT .22 on steel targets at 200yrds, it was rather worthwhile....until the lightning got started.

Haven't been shooting since the farm closed down.. :( need to find a new place, thought about going up to Pawnee, I've got a good spot up there out in the middle of no-where but it takes a good 2 hours + from Boulder..
Got out this morning for some more handgun practice. Last time out I did really well with my CZ 75. This time I wasn't as good for whatever reason. Did much better with the XDM. Now, if only I could quit riding the slide release lever so the slide would lock back when the magazine runs empty. Stupid thumb.

Shot my test rounds for titegroup today. For my 9mm 115gr plated bullets, load 4.0, 4.2, and 4.4 grains. All fired great in 2 different guns. On the 45acp, 230gr plated, loaded from 4.4 to 4.8 grains and again all fired great. I'll probably use the middle load for each set. I recovered about half of the cases for the test rounds, no signs of any pressure issues.
Now off to sort and clean some brass and start loading up some more rounds for the weekend.

While it wasn't today, on fathers day my daughter and I went out and shot out to 1 mile. The range finder said 1,761 yards. I sent 5 rounds down range with 5 different wind calls. Never saw anything, no trace no splash no nothing (don't have a spotting scope)!! We decided to pack up and go get ice cream. When we went to go pick up the target, I had 1 impact on the right collar bone! Judging by what I held and what the wind was doing between the target and I, I believe it was the 4th shot that connected! Good times for sure!!!
Was yesterday but a whole bunch of 260 at small steel and irons at large.
Not at the range, but on the Twin Cone trail. Fired about 200 rounds through the 10/22 which has a new slide fire stock I got for my birthday. Took a few tries to figure it out, but after that it was fun.
On 7-4-14
After swapping around a few optics and not getting a reliable zero due to wind the last time out, Zero'd the SBR Aimpoint PRO setup, my Noveske N4 suppressed and the Sig716P suppressed.
Apparently, I lost the zoom post knob on my new SSA optic on the Sig last time out. :-(

the vertical stringing is due to the thinner barrel profile.
Went out to Pawnee Sportsman's Center to collect the two 10" steel plates I left out there after the Colo. Freedom Shoot. Also picked up my shooting mat, it wasn't where I left it, wind had taken it to a nice landing area amongst the prickly-pear cactus.
Shot up some 147gr 9mm on some steel, and discovered that the Fiocchi 124gr stuff that previously had been fine in the PPQ was having occasional failure-to-feed. Home-brewed 147gr was fine. Did some double-tap tests with the ARs, not convinced that the LANTAC comp is the real deal, so ordered a Fortis RED today. I've shot one of them, and it was pretty much straight back push. It's all about tweaking, ya know!
Got out there and discovered that with all the accouterments I brought, I forgot AR mags! Lots of stripper clips full of 5.56...fortunately JJ had a mag I could load up and use.

My father in law is in town visiting for the fourth and my daughters birthday. Took my daughter shooting for the first time with her new cricket 22 she got for her birthday. Father in law dumped a 75rd drum through my Hungarian amd smile from ear to ear. Was a good weekend.
Caught a Steel Challenge match in Pueblo yesterday afternoon. Several forum members were also there. Shot my Smith 929 revo. Always a good time.
Gonna grab my 243 and shoot it out past 1700 yards today. Also going to take my M-16 just because I can. Wont be shooting it out to 1700 yards though.
Shot with Hoser and Zach O today. The close target was at 600 yards, the long at 1,760 (1 mile). The mirage was very heavy out long, and there was plenty of wind. I was holding 17 feet of wind at one point and something like 70 feet of elevation.
We ended up with three hits on the mile target, but the mirage was so heavy it was impossible to tell exactly when they occurred. We each had a couple shots with no splash in the dirt, so I think we're dividing them up one each.
The M-16 was the perfect end to a fun day.
Yesterday afternoon - weather was beautiful after a short rain storm.
300-400ish rds of 22lr through a new CMMG upper (http://www.cmmginc.com/product_p/22b8f26.htm) on a full auto lower. Still needs work, but it was firing at least strings of 20 at a time by the end of the session. Needed cleaning and re-lube and a heavier buffer to really get going. Since the bolt carrier was moving out of place quite a bit, I think this thing (http://taccom3g.com/22INSERT_PRESSURE_PLUG.html) may also help reliability. But dang was it fun.
Re-sighted in the irons on my scar 17.
Tried to spend a little time with an AK conversion I'm doing but I ran out of light. Getting the FA fire control parts into an AK receiver is a PITA when you can't see well.
Found a nice pile of brass somebody forgot to pick up at the range - free goodies!

Zeroed one of my Kimber 82Gs at 100 m with the Konus 6-24x50mm scope and did left-right iron sight zero on a couple new (to me) guns, an M&P 10 and a Daniels Defense .300 BLK upper mounted to my Double D lower. Forgot my spotting scope so was satisfied with just putting the target at 50 m and getting groups in the vertical borders of the 10-ring.

Introduced the Girlfriend to steel match on Friday with the SR22. On Saturday, I went to the range with 6 other guys from my church and shot about 20 different guns. Made a huge pile of brass and had a blast. Going to test some loads this week in my 6mmx45 (6mm-223), 300BLK, and .308WIN on Thursday. Then I am doing the Lake George 3-gun on Saturday. Shooting 4 times in 8 days is still not enough. ;)
Installed some new BUIS on my rifle and re-zeroed it at 25 yards. All I can say is Daniel Defense makes an accurate rifle as I was banging the steel at 200 yds with no problem.

Went to the little range off Deckers road near buffalo creek. Was me, my wife, son, daughter in law and daughter in laws brother. They hadn't gotten to shoot in a while, so they really enjoyed it.
My son seemed determined to keep shooting until we had shot every round I brought with us. Went thru 300 rounds of 9mm, about 200 rounds of 45, and 300 rounds of 22. I've got a couple steel spinner targets, they are labelled for 22, but they held up fine to the 9 and 45 as well at 10-15 yards. Flies where out in force, the biting kind. Had decent cloud cover for most of the time, so temps were nice.
Must have been busy there over the weekend, because there was a ton of trash everywhere. We packed out 2 large yard-sized trashbags full of other peoples trash, and could have filled a bunch more. Won't be long before they close the area down to shooting if the idiots keep on trashing the place.
Now I get to sort brass, and clean every gun I own.

Spent some time at the Olympic Training Center again Tuesday night with my Remington 40X rimfire. Shot about 75 rounds or so.
A good friend was shooting his 40X with a new Lilja barrel. His accuracy went way up with a much higher X-Count than with the OEM barrel.
The nice thing was we had the whole range to ourselves. All the resident athletes were done for the day leaving us knuckledraggers to train.
Hopefully soon my rear sight will be in and I can start some coat and sling shooting with my Anschutz 2018.

The new barrel is a hammer. I still threw out 4 or 5 nines, but they were crazy huge misses down in the low 9's. Clearly I was screwing something up. When I did it right, I'd guess group size decreased by 1/4 or 1/3 from the original barrel, which shot pretty dang well for a 58 year old tube. I went from an average of probably 10.2 or 10.3 to a 10.6 or so. It's pretty cool to have a .22 so good that you know that a miss is you and not the gun or ammo.
As an aside, it's just amazing to me how subtle a change in your position can put you in the 9's. I had a couple 9.3's that were immediately preceded by a string of 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8's. Five or ten perfect shots followed by one out of group, and I didn't detect anything different in my set up. I'm looking forward to going back next week and trying to nail down the changes that cause misses. My guess today from some careful observation at the end of the string is that it's related to head pressure and the rear bag getting compressed.

Since I got it, it has been finicky, real tight tolerances. I have had a few issues here and there but it is shooting well again.
Care to elaborate on which tolerances were tight? What issues did you have? Which ones have been solved? How did they get solved?
sorry to rapid-fire the questions, but I'm very interested in how the LMT works for others.

Went to Frontier Sportsman's and fired some rounds through my new BCM SS410 upper. It's a pretty sweet shooter!
Factory ammo was giving me an average group of .81" at 100yds. I loaded some 75gr Hornady HPBTs and my best group with those was .542" with 22.0gr of H335.

For anyone interested, FSC had a new sign up on the trailer saying that the Hanover Range 200 and 300yd ranges are closed M-F until further notice to facilitate construction of the 1000yd range. Could it be? Are they finally really building the 1k range??! :D
Practiced some more with a couple of handguns. Sent 200 rounds downrange. Did quite well by my standards. Really focusing on trigger control and trying to stay more focused on the front sight. Now, if I could just do that when the timer sounds and everyone is watching.
All three of my targets pretty much looked the same. Hard to tell from all of the pasters how well I did so I took a shot of the back side too.

Took my daughter out again and after about 20 rounds at 10 yards she felt she needed a bit more challenge so she went and moved the target back to just about 20 yards and she was still able to hit the ten ring. She gets better every time she shoots. She hung a target in her room and does dry fire practice two or three times a week. Last night after I went to bed I could here the hammer falling for about 30 minutes.
I spent some time with my 686 and SKS, been a while since I took the 686 out for a round and she still impresses me, best handgun I have ever owned, never sell her.
She isn't dry firing that rimfire handgun, is she?

Yes, and thanks for asking. There is a spent shell in the chamber but since it is a Ruger, I doubt that she would be able to hurt it anyway.

Shot some 45-70 test loads. The good load was 49 grains of H4895 405 grain lead RNFP starline brass and CCI LR primers. 1in group, going average 1670 out of a 18" marlin guide gun. Funny thing was I had two bad primers out of 30 shots.
Yesterday I took my savage 308 and 30-06 out to do some load tests. Turns out the 308 likes the FGMM, and M118LR clone loads the best.
And with the '06, tested some Hornady 150SST bullets out to 500 yds. Really liked that load using h4895. Shoots 3/4 MOA from a stock model 111.

Spent some quality time at the Olympic Training Center last night with a friend.
It had been a few weeks since I spent any time there.
With the World Championship going on right now in Spain I figured we would have the range to ourselves. But there was a few resident athletes that didnt make the World Team there training. Always good to spend a little time talking to them. Getting to that level and staying there is pretty cool for sure.
In the end I put 59 of 60 shots inside of the 10 ring (which is 1cm) at 50 meters. Pretty happy all in all. Tried to blame everything but myself for the 9.8, but is/was me being lazy/stupid.

I went 8 for 10 in the 4x6" COM box at 25yards with the other 2 within 2 inches of it. Not too shabby with trijicon high viz sights on a g19. It's built for speed. Not "target" shooting...

It is free floating, but it was wedged between the scope and the forearm tube on an XLR chassis. I was all over till I took it out. It was wedged fairly tight, well, tight enough to completely ruin my day!

Viper PST is how it happens, they are somewhat known to be sensitive to torque on the rings, ring alignment, and other things like that. Then consider that if the scope was zeroed before putting the caps on, then putting it on slightly torquing on the scope, throws it off. (don't know if zeroing was done before the caps or not)
Great scopes for the money, and I'm not trying to bag on them (I own 2 of them) but this issue is known and Vortex will tell you that certain ring companies that tell you to torque the snot out of their rings will/can cause issues.

I'm not running an XLR currently (going to be running a Carbon on my next build) I'm just familiar with Zach's rig. On my 2 PST's (both on AR's ) I'm running a Larue and a Burris PEPR. Biggest thing is not to go crazy on the torque (there's a select couple of very high end ring mfg's that recommend extremely high torque).
If you go by Kyles reccomendations on his webpage about ring selection, you should be able to avoid getting into this position as far as height goes. http://www.xlrindustries.com/Technical.html
Err to the high side by a bit, and then go with a good set of rings and a good 1 piece base and you'll have no problems. Nice thing about the XLR and other Chassis systems is the adjustable cheek piece, if you end up a little on the high side, it's not a big deal. I'd guess you'd be just fine with med or high rings on top of a NF or similar 20moa base.
If you haven't bought a base yet, bullets.com has a great deal running on NF bases for rem 700's and savages right now. $90 is a damn good price on them. I ordered one last night for my build in process. http://www.bullets.com/search?s=brand:nightforce

I'm bummed I couldn't get away today but yesterday was beautiful. I've had a bunch of project guns sitting in the basement all winter just waiting for a good day to take them out, so Friday was full-auto Friday for me. Had a blast shooting off several of my conversions. My new MP5SD clone has quickly jumped into my top 5 guns of all time to shoot, for just blasting away anyway. Almost no rise, and nicely quiet using just cheap WWB 9mm. Felt good to get out to the range after it's been so cold lately.
Took two of my girls to the range. Shot some pistol, then moved to the 308. The 16 year old daughter won Starbucks by beating me 😀. Very happy losing to her .74 inch five shot group at 100.

You're in luck, i have a camo one. I prefer black myself, less light reflection.
Went out for some much needed trigger time on a couple of handguns today. Weather was awesome. First time I have fired a live round since probably last August.
Fired a total of 400 rounds. Didn't start out so well. A lot of my shots were going about three inches left as I often tend to do. Decided to do a little experimenting. What I found was that if I slowed down, took my time, focused on the front sight, and squeezed the trigger everything was going left. If I totally ignored the sights, focused on and pointed at my target, and sped things up then all of my shots were tight and in the center where I was pointing. Isn't this the opposite of how things are supposed to go? Four hundred rounds gave me plenty of time to switch back and forth between "proper technique" and just pointing and burning rounds off. Never changed. The more I tried to do it right, I just kept shooting left. When I would just point and shoot everything was good.
I'm going to try my new technique (or lack thereof) next time there's an IDPA match and see what happens.
I'm going to try my new technique (or lack thereof) next time there's an IDPA match and see what happens.
I recently went through the exact same exercise. The next match there were a lot of point-shoot distance targets. I had never thought of targets like that before, but once I got into that mentality, I was really able to open up my speed and placed 3rd over all. There was still a significant gap between me and 1st and 2nd place though. It's amazing how much you can cut down your time when you aren't hunting for sights. I want to say that the point-shoot distance (for me) is anything out to 7 yards? I had to be shown that I could do that. I wouldn't have even thought to try that technique on my own.
*Pretty sure a few of the top spot shooters also were not there last match.

believe it or not, they go pretty slow out of a 16" barrel. 2415fps average speed, actually.... I think I can throw faster than that!
I went to a rifle match Saturday. I shot my new-ish AKA-Spook built 6 Grendel. With minimal load development I had what I thought was going to be a pretty solid load.
The first string was prone, the two small targets were a 3x5 and a 5 inch round plate at 300 yards. I had three misses. I added two clicks of elevation and went on to clean the rest of the match. I guess spending a lot of time shooting my air rifle kneeling and off sticks in my basement paid off. Having a crazy accurate gun does not hurt either...

Worked down (not up) some loads today trying to find the how little powder I could use and still get all my ARs to cycle.
Working with 55gr boolits and H335.
18.3 gr seemed to be just about the lowest I could go and still keep everything functioning. Below that, I had function issues and and the accuracy went out the window. With 18.3 gr I was still shooting just about 1 MOA. When I dropped to 17.9 gr, I only had 2/5 on the paper plate and I had to manually cycle the gun because the bolt wasn't going far enough back to catch the next round.
I tried to make it to the range last Sunday morning, but I had to turn around after driving two blocks from my house, when my car hit a sheet of black ice --- here in the North East --- and slid 50 feet without crashing into anything.
Last Saturday, I did some trigger time shooting my Mas 49/56 in 308 --- with my newly purchased titanium firing pin --- and had fun shooting my metallic cowbell target offhand at 50 yards with my .177 RWS Model 54 recoilless at 50 yards.

Also practiced some positional drills at the same ranges. New rig shoots like a dream! Even stretched out to 1030y and hit a bowling pin sized target 3 outta 5 times. Gotta love an all Colorado made rifle!
Took the family out to Ben Lomond. My wife is scary good with a Glock. Got my six year old son shooting his little Savage Rascal. He keeps getting better. Gotta pass it on.
Just a great day.
Watching a few guys last weekend shoot their 223 bolt guns made me get the itch to yank off the 300 Whisper barrel off my Bighorn action and screw on the 223 Ackley barrel.
I had not done much load development with it, pretty much just fireformed brass. 223 Ackley and 300 Whisper both feed flawless out of Accuracy International 223 mags.
I went to the range with a bunch of test loads. 24.5 - 26.5 gns of Varget under a 80 gn Sierra. I wanted to try Varget because I have a lot of it.
The 26.5 gn load easily put 5 shots inside 1/3 of an inch at 100 yards. It chronographed out at 3010 fps with a low ES.
Going to load up a small batch and see how they shoot at 400 yards.

How did it shoot?

Shot my first 20 10mm reloads thru my new KKM barrel. And 20 .380 reloads thru wife's sig and my Glock 42. All went well. Wife liked the lower recoil of the reloads. Not one single issue.

Hoser, this new match of yours is PERFECT for a 223 semi auto. Don't need much more for 300 yards.

Sighted in a rifle, tossed some boolits from 1k.

As soon as I get a solid load for my 223 Ackley, time to find a solid 1/2 - 3/4 MOA load for my 300 Whisper. A 220 Sierra or 230 Berger should hit that steel with some oomph.

Finally sighted in the RAR in 22 WMR. Outside some extraction issues, it's an impressive rifle. Also sighted in the JRC 9mm carbine. Had sighted in on steel , but wanted actual off bench results. Iron sights @ 50yds very nice. Those Korean 50rd drums blocked to 15 rds ran flawlessly. Looks like the spouses JRC is one of her new HD units.

It wasn't today, it was Friday after work, and it was taking my wife to RMSS to let her shoot various small pistols to decide what she wants. There were just three couples in the range, so I guess it was date night. I did find a cure to checking out the bodacious behind on the young lady two lanes over, and that was to be out with my wife and five handguns.
She shot the Glock 42, the Springfield XDS and my Shield, and I pumped a few rounds downrange in both CZs. She ended up buying her first gun of any kind on Sunday - the Ruger LC9s, as it felt better in hand than anything else she'd tried. Now to her her into a class and get her back into the range.

Going to test my two stamper again today. At 8500ft elevation I think I'm running into issues getting the 300BLK subs to cycle. It was so quiet last time but not cycling. I upped the charge a bit. We will see what happens.
I went to the Pueblo range yesterday afternoon before the monthly membership meeting.
I had to verify my 300 yard zero. With a 17 inch barrel and 55 Hornady 55 FMJs on top of a case full of Varget, I got this at 200 yards. Pretty happy considering I am was holding center of mass with a 4 power scope and a pink grip. Pretty solid windage and only screwed up elevation. Three of the five were touching with two going about .75-1.5 inches high. That is a 1/2 scale IPSC target, the head is 3x3 inches.

Nope. The lock is just different. The numbers don't line up the normal way in the middle like most all locks. However the electronic keypad is fixed and working fine after some dude forced his way in and broke it.

Yesterday went to a private range and gave a quick primer about shooting to a group of 10-13 yr olds. We shot suppressed ARs and bolt guns. After the safety portion we went right to shooting. Seeing as there were four of us 'instructors' there (I am not a certified long range instructor...), we got the kids banging on steel... That's when I found out the back-story..
These were all kids that are growing up 'father-less,' or otherwise no one to teach them about these things. In the afternoon, we took them on a guided quail hunt, then the range staff cooked them up and we all had a great time.

I sighted in my new Vortex 1x4 until the wind pissed me off. No wind at all until I sat down and put my finger on the trigger. Oh well... At least it wasn't cold and it held off from blowing hard until I got the job done.

yup, awesome!
Did some load development on my new rifle. Found 4 great loads. 2 with Sierra 142 SMKs and 2 with Berger 140 Hybrids (thanks XC700116). The best was the SMKs, 5 shot at .200". SD and ES was horrible! The best Berger group was .289" with an SD of 5 FPS and an ES of 8.
had a buddy (Bryan S.) with his new rifle and two new shooters go with. We were gathering data on factory 6.5 Creedmoor Hornady 140 A-Max. It shoots ok out to 750. After that the elevation was quite sporadic. But even with 10mph winds, gusting to 16 all 3 of them made hits at 1,000. The most impressive was the girl we brought. Really new to shooting, and no shit after a frustrating 500 yard hit (remember, new to shooting. Especially with a fixed 20x optic) she had a FIRST round hit at 750, and 1,000! Good day for sure!

Went to Raton NM last Sunday for the monthly Sporting Rifle Match. 60 Steel targets spread out over a 2 mile hike. Close target is about 250 yards and the far target is almost 900 yards. Had a good match and got to hang out with some good friends and then dinner afterwards. After the match I shot my AKA-Spook built 6 Grendel out to 690 yards. The JBM and Sierra numbers were right on. It took one shot to find the wind and then a 12 inch round plate at 690 was easy.

53 actually. Good enough for first loser. Stu shot a 54 for the win. But, I cleaned the sticks with the sun right in my face. Seeing the targets was a mother.

Shot an IDPA Match today. Had a real good bunch of people on my squad. I always enjoy shooting my little 686.
Broke out my AR-15 and got a zero on it after swapping out scopes.
Ran my new Shield with my new holster (Sweetwater Saddlery) and Gold Dots through my regular drills to make sure it's good to go for carry. It is.
Went today, for the first time in months, since I didn't see my work schedule coinciding with any nice weather for the near future.
Put 200rds of .22 through the Sig to break in the conversion kit. CCI Standard velocity is just barely enough to cycle it. I'd experience one ftf per mag. Could be the 2nd round, the 8th, or the 10th, but there was a failure every mag except for one. Shot Remington Thunderbolt through it, which ran flawlessly, but also had the tendency to spit still burning powder out of the breech and onto my arms or face, which was uncomfortable.
Put 90 rounds through the AK, and a couple clips through the SKS. At some point during the first clip, I managed to eject a casing so that it landed in my front left pocket. I didn't notice it in there until I was taking my phone out of said pocket, it was already cool by then.

I had the MKII there also, because I know it WILL shoot. I wanted to make it a positive range trip.
Made it out to the range for the first time this year. Mostly wanted to shoot my new Glock 43.
The target situation is a bit bleak right now so bear with me. I used some well loved IPSC targets as backers.
Here were the first couple of mags through the 43. The first mag went left and a few went low and left. The second mag I took my time and focused more on what I was doing and those rounds went more in the center.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/15/1aed916fe5404642a97cf34bc661a7eb.jpg
Here were the next two magazines. One shot strayed a bit low and left and for some unexplained reason I threw one shot high near the hole in the top of the target.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/15/7ca7a90b51441fe3a39e9dfdd42c18f4.jpg
Put several more magazines through it with similar results. Thought maybe I was just having a rough day so put a couple of mags through my favorite Glock 19. Here was the first magazine.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/15/a71b5c147d00148bd1d90da5efc3a4e3.jpg

Definitely not my best day but the 19 was much easier to shoot well than the 43.
Put my first rounds through the Just Right Carbine today as well. Off hand at 25 yards. I was a bit shaky for whatever reason. Slightly low and just to the right. Wasn't really sighting it in or shooting for groups. Mostly wanted to see if it functioned.

Anyhow, a bad day shooting is still better than a good day at work, right?
Also, it took me forever to get to and from CRC today. 96th Avenue is washed out a couple of miles west of the range and you can't get there the way I normally go. The washout is about 18 feet deep and probably thirty feet accross. Had to double back, detour south to 36 and come in from the east side.
Good to know about the wash out. I don't even remember any other way to get out there. I'll have to leave early for next weeks match.
I did talk to a county worker at the washout. He said they were going to start working on it Monday. I suppose there's a chance it could be done before your next match.

I'm not planning on getting rid of the 43. Just need more practice to feel more confident with it. It seems like it's going to be really easy to carry.
Wish I even knew they posted the road closure on the website. Could have saved me some time.
Snuck out to the range with my 338 Lapua and 223 Ackley bolt gun to verify/true long range dope.
Checked zeros at 300 and 100 yards. Forgot I had changed stocks/scopes on my 223 so it was all dicked up.
After that I put 20 rounds of 338 on a 600 yard target. I forgot I was shooting a 300 gn bullet with an almost .900 bc. I needed a lot less wind that I am used to 115 gn 6mm bullets.
The energy that those 300s put into a chunk of steel is pretty cool compared to the little bullets I am used to shooting.
On the way out I burned a mag of factory ammo through my carry gun just to make sure it still worked and I can still clean a plate rack with it.

Finally made it down to CMSC to do a ladder test for some new 77gr SMK loads, but it was way to windy. Ended up plinking on the steel for 300 rounds instead.

Hit lots of steel with the 223 and 338. Hit a lot of dirt and a little steel with the 416.
Went through a handful or two of Motrin along the way.

anyway, I wouldnt have picked a gun that weighs almost 2 pounds loaded as her first gun, and I wouldnt have picked a taurus, but the nice salesman told her it was a good gun and a good deal.
It shot fine for the few rounds we put through it.
I had no part in her purchasing the gun. I wasnt there. Had I been, I would probably be 86ed from there.
In case you were wondering. the gun is $253 plus free shipping at Buds, $289 at Cabelas.

Finished my load development and shot steel at 400, 500, 600, 700 and 1000 to document new data. MV is 2,585 and Shooter is spot on with real world hits. Steel was freshly painted and I was the only one there. Used .1 gr above and below my final load (44.5 Varget, 175 SMK, 2.005, 2.810- 2.2235) to confirm location on steel center line for correct elevation mils.
Also made some subsonic rounds (TiteGroup 8gr, CCI#200 and the same specs as my normal rounds), with the suppressor it was back yard approved. Hit the 400 yard steel at 16.8 mil drop. Who would have thought it would reach out that far consistently.

What's working for you? I might have what you need on hand.
Shot a match with a bunch of friends yesterday. I shot my Smith 929. Pretty happy with how everything went. Only one hick-up with my aiming ability yesterday on the classifier where I nicked a no shoot going too fast.
Afterwards I put about 20 rounds through my 416 Rigby. I had to get it sighted in after a scope change, Leupold 1-5 to a S&B 1-4 Short Dot. After getting it dialed, in I smacked a 12 inch plate at 300 yards a few times. I was/am amazed how accurate that thumper is. Pretty happy with the load (350 gn Barnes TTSX) and should be ready for elk season. And if I bump into a stray bull Elephant or Cape Buffalo, I will be ok.
Took my aka-spook built 6 Grendel to the range yesterday morning.
My goal was to test how Varget and Berger 105s would work at 600 yards.
18x36 plate. 5 shots in about 2 inches. For a bolt gun I would be happy. Out of a gas gun, I am beyond happy.

Pic is of MIL.
Nice shooting, but odd distance to targets.

What do you mean odd distance? I just drive out targets and stop whenever I feel like it. Change can be good.

I bought some new targets! 1/4" round stickers (475 for about $1.50). I was only shooting at 100 yards, but these little guys were fun to shoot.

Shot the bowling pin match at Centennial (friend is a member there). Did well enough, but didn't win.
Shot the combat pistol league at the Front Range Gun Club with my sons. My target is in the middle.

Had a fun night shooting the IDPA match at Centennial Gun Club. 3 stages, most on the simpler side, I think mainly to minimize the setup/tear-down time, but they were fun. Will definitely be hitting the next couple, should keep me happy until the weather allows the clear creek IDPA matches to start back up. For anyone else interested, they run the first sunday each month at 6pm, new shooter briefing starts at 5:15 pm.

Shot my AR-10 build in 6.5 Creedmore. I'm pretty excited to take it out further than 200 yards in the near future.
Headed on out to Pawnee Grasslands, was a lil chilly but nothing extreme.

Good looking rifle, let us know how it shoots as you stretch it out.

Took my little girl out with a Walther P22 TALO edition that Santa left for her (thanks Noah)! She did great! Shot 250 rounds. In 16° and snowing. She didn't want to leave.62958

Nice Zach!!
How did she do racking the slide by herself zach?
Thanks Micha.
Travis, she can do if no problem. The only thing she is having trouble with is taking the saftey off. I guess I'd rather it be that way than putting it on. Otherwise, the trigger is a little stiff for her to pull. Other than that, she did great! And she loved it!

P22 slide is super easy to cycle. P22 is, IMO, the best gun out there for new shooters.
Good job passing it on to your daughter, Zach! Liberty is never more than 1 generation away from extinction.
Very cool zack , I'm sure the trigger will smooth out with 5000 rounds through it soon

Down in the springs! Good to meet you, though I didn't really introduce myself.
Thanks HB and Travis. What a fun day!
