Just got this from an email chain. I've heard chatter in the past few months about the suspicious nature of some of the recent forest fires. Apparently the online mag that the Boston boys used for their device also featured an article on starting forest fires as terrorism. Add in the power plant attacks and now we have this.
"ATTENTION ALL FIELD GOING EMPLOYEES:
As most of you have heard, there was an incident on the Jemez Ranger District involving an explosive device that appears to have been deliberately placed at the base of an information sign. The device was constructed with a mason jar. It was placed on the ground with no camouflaging material to conceal it from view. When tapped with the boot of the individual, the device detonated. Thankfully, the individual’s injuries were minor. At present, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm, and Explosives has taken the lead on the investigation. No additional devices have been found on the Forest.
Due to this incident, many employees have expressed some concern about their safety while working in the field. So what can you do to protect yourself?
First, stay vigilant and increase your “situational awareness.” Look up, down, and all around. If something appears “out of place” or “not quite right” (i.e. a suspicious looking object), do not disturb it! Move away from the area and immediately contact law enforcement.
Second, work in pairs if possible so that a second person is right there in the event of an accident.
Finally, always have appropriate communication devices readily available and be sure to adhere to our Forest’s Check-Out and Check-In Program.

Good thing secure borders keep terrorist out.
Anything "bad" does not make it terrorism. Terrorism has the specific goal of changing how a large population acts. The towers were a text book example of real terrorism. America has become afraid of its own shadow because of those attacks. They affect our daily lives... as a whole. Labeling EVERYTHING "Terrorism" leaves us less prepared to deal with real terrorism.

I would have probably shot it...

Yup, the ol' gubbermint is doing a bang-up job of keeping us safe. Nuttin' to see here, go back to your TV and fast pseudo food.
Sounds like someone was testing a pressure switch.
Those of you crying terrorism realize that this is almost guaranteed to be some lone whackjob US citizen, right?
What terrorists are going to waste their resources and risk being discovered by placing a couple moonshine bombs on forest trails?

More specifically, I'd lean much more toward one of these teenage wanna/gonna be mass killers doing some pre-event testing, which is pretty much a pattern with every one of them that's used explosives. Or some home grown wackjob that's a wanna be jihadist. But I'd honestly be shocked if this was from anyone of middle-eastern persuasion, because of exactly what Ridge mentioned, they normally know exactly how to get the job done so they don't waste time testing, especially in what one would assume is the taget country.
You guys are getting it ;)

You and the pup missed the sarcasm, of my post. I guess if there's no smiley icon, it gets taken seriously.

Curious, how would you Mr. Homeland Security Czar Mr. Hound prepare and "deal" with real terrorism? Which unfortunately, like calling someone a Racist, has been abused beyond imagination.

Sarcasm doesn't transmit well over printed text.

They have been saying that terrorists are going to use forest fires for years.

Nice that you immediately go on the attack while in the same post agree with what I said. It is OK that we might agree on something. Maybe it would have been better if you had just kept your original post laughing at what I stated instead of deleting it? I guess now I know why you did it.

"they" are labeling everything "terrorist" so "they" have a reason to enact more illegal restrictions on American freedoms and rights....

Precisely. They have a collective orgasm every time they can pin something on "domestic terrorism".

It's not an attack, but a legit question. How would you, or anyone here address / deal with Terrorism? Perhaps i'll start a new discussion regarding this subject. After lunch. Everyone keep their eyes open and keyboards warm ;)
ETA: tight schedule. will start a terrorism topic ( specifically Islamist)this afternoon.

In my opinion, its the intended outcome that determines if it is terrorism, regardless of the source. If its the dumbass kid planting shine bombs in the forest, or an organized group based here or outside the states, if the intention is to cause damage, a higher state of alertness, or a draining of resources, it is Terrorism. I do agree that far to many things are labeled as terrorism these days. However, in this specific case, we see one device (officially) and have an official warning of the possible of multiple devices. (Scuttlebutt is another was found and is being examined for evidence) The device that exploded fits the profile of a similar suggested item from an online terrorist magazine that anyone with WIFI can access. I'm not saying this event is the work of Jihadis, Chinese, Koreans, Militia, Lone Wolf, Hippie Enviros, or Umpaloompas. What I can say with confidence is that someone did this and they are a dick.
What I intended for this post is to inform the collective that so far one person ( a forest service employee) was injured by a device found in the woods and the warning has gone out that we should be on the lookout for similar items. I figured that maybe people on this forum were like me in that they spend time outdoors enjoying nature, and like me, were the type to kick over abandoned mason jars of unknown source and liquids if encountered.
My mentioning of the fires and power station attacks may have been a little misleading. My intention there was to point out that there has been a rash of dick moves lately that have gone largely unnoticed by the mainstream press. Meaning multiple station attacks and suspicious fires. Again I don't know whether there is one group, multiple groups, or copycat lone assholes starved for attention. Once again, my only certainty is that any party or parties involved in causing these situations..... are dicks.
