View Full Version : Can someone measure their front sight for me?
Trying to find out how tall the factory front sight is on a full size S&W M&P 9mm.
I recently picked up a nice used one with some sort of aftermarket front sight. Took it to the range today and it shoots about six inches low.
Looking for for a measurement off a factory sight from the top of the slide to the top of the front sight post. The one I have measures 0.180".
I'm just about willing to bet the original sight was somewhere under 0.150" tall. Just want to verify.
Thanks in advance.

fine cut hand file.

Eh. It has a fiber optic thingy in it. Pretty high up on the post. Not really an option. I'll just replace it. Just want to figure out what height I should get before I order one.

What sight picture do you hold Ray? Center or 6 o'clock?
While I prefer a six o'clock type hold, I have been getting pretty used to most newer handguns using the front sight dot as the POI.
At seven to fifteen yards I was having to completely cover the body of a standard IDPA target (basically had a six o'clock hold on the head) for a good center hit. The fiber optic dot was pretty much right beneath the head and the shots were impacting about four or five inches below that.
From what I can determine from all of the garbage out there on the internet, the front sight on the standard, full size models should be .160" tall and the longer barreled models use a .180" front sight. Mine measures .180". I'm thinking one that is .020" shorter just might do the trick.
Dawson has a nice front sight height calculator on their page: http://www.dawsonprecision.com/CategoryProductList.jsp?cat=SIGHTS+FRONT

Thanks. I'll check it out. [Awesom]
I would imagine buying a new set of front and rear sights for your specific model should get it on target. For me, it would take the guess work out of it. My 2 cents.

Ray if I remember correctly the sights on the pro are different height than the standard m&p. Maybe someone moved a pro front sight and left the stock rear? Or vice versa
Thanks. Looked a little closer with my aging eyes and it appears the front and rear are both Warren Tactical sights. Not sure if the wrong set was put on this thing or what. All I know is I need a shorter front sight to make me happy.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Decided on a whim to order a front sight that is the same as the factory height. Only .020" shorter than the one that is on it now but I'll give it a shot and see what it does. If it doesn't bring my POI up enough for me I will probably do the math and order one precisely the size I need from Dawson Precision.
Thanks for the help guys. Even you, Jim. [Coffee]
