Hey mike! Just wanted to clarify. The first two matches will be coming up here shortly?
Same rules as the shotgun challenge?

Not as soon as I would like. 3rd Sat in Oct and Nov are the best I could do with the club schedule. Same USPSA rules as the big match.

Can someone post up the divisions and classes? I'm interested in coming to shoot this series and I want to make sure I'm set up correctly. Also, so that I have an excuse for the wife as to why I need to buy another gun!

We have Open, Auto and Pump. We will be running USPSA multigun rules. You can check there for more details. Also there is a very detailed equipment description and a link to the USPSA rules on the Pikes Peak Gun Club web sight.

I won't speak to round count but I did see this a few weeks ago and thought it might help you out:

If you don't have the funds to help the economy out right now you can throw a bandoleer over your shoulder or just have a shotgun shell bag attached to your belt...whatever gets you out to the range!

Round count for the local matches will be 90-100 shells.

You can duct tape a shell box to your belt as long as you don't get too excitable.

Announcement! We made an adjustment in the schedule at the club and were able to free up another Sat for the Pikes Peak Shotgun Series. We will now be starting the series on Sept 20th. Only 4 weeks away. That puts the schedule at 9/20, 10/18 and 11/15 of 2014. I am very excited to host these practical shotgun matches and they should be a lot to fun.
A huge thank you to Pikes Peak Gun Club for working with us to have these matches and a huge thank you to Rocky Mountain Targets for helping us out with steel. Remember... 5 stages, targeting 90-100 shells. See everyone soon.
Dang, I just remembered I have a deer tag and I'll be hunting on the 20th. Just goes to show I'm more of a shooter than a hunter, can't even remember what tags I have.
What's the start time? I don't get off till 0700 coming from Johnstown area. Thanks.

what would be the appropriate amount of slugs for each match?
CO-Exprs
09-07-2014, 11:56
Well, I don't want to break anyone's bank, burning expensive slugs. Since the development of this match is still very fluid, things might change in the future, but for now, I am targeting between 5 and 10 slug targets. We will stay away from anything particularly difficult for these first few matches, but you should know where your slugs hit at 50yds. I am drawing up the stages now and will have them posted for review before the match.

For those who are local, the Pikes Peak Shotgun Series kicks off on Sat 9/20 at Pikes Peak Gun Club in Colorado Springs.
5 stages of run-n-gun shotgun'n fun. Roughly 100 target match with a few slugs. No buckshot.
Thank you to Pikes Peak Gun Club for purchasing enough steel targets to make the monthly matches possible. Thank you to Rocky Mountain Targets for loaning us what we don't have.
Set up starts at 7:00 with the shooters briefing at 9:00. I'd like to see a solid 30-40 people show up for the match so we can show the club that the investment in steel was solid.
Cost is $20. Any one there before 8:00, helping set up the stages will get a voucher for half off.
We will be running USPSA rules with Auto, Open and Pump divisions. We are imposing an ammo rule of 2.75", lead only ammo... as labelled on the box. I'm not gonna measure your shells, but you should be able to show me the box the ammo came out of, should it come into question. Time plus scoring. And just to be clear, we will be using points... not total time.

what's an easy way to do chamber flags with shotguns? A really long zip tie shoved into the bolt, and a few inches sticking out the ejection port? would that work?

Got a couple of these in goody bag at a recent match. They work well.

A dead BIC pen with a neon cable tie on it.

No.
It has to actually be something that keeps the bolt out of battery a good amount, like an inch or more, or is readily identifiable as a manufactured chamber safety flag. An "empty" hull, technically would be a DQable offense. Cardboard strips, plastic strips cords and ties...not only won't work for the intended purpose, sometimes the plastic "make-dos" melt into the chamber...a whole other problem.
Mike said he was going to order some of the cheap ones, and I have a bunch, so bring a few dollars extra. I think between Mike and I, we will have enough to outfit several squads of scattergunners, so don't freak if you don't have one, and don't use something that will damage your shotgun or otherwise be insufficient for the task. Bring your SG in a case, and when we are ready to start shooting, Mike will make sure everyone has something suitable.

Mark is correct. I've ordered up some cheap chamber flags from Brownells, just in case anyone needs one. $5ea. They are supposed to be here this week... so I've got my fingers crossed.

I was just reading the rules... yet again and came across a rule in the USPSA 2013 rule set, I had missed previously.
2.1.2.1 Handguns with shoulder stocks and/or fore grips of any kind are prohibited. Rifles and Shotguns
must be fitted with a stock, enabling it to be fired from the shoulder.
Since this match has the potential to attract a very wide range of participants from different shooting interests, I thought it worth pointing out that all shotguns in this match are required to have a shoulder stock.

This is a new match for me and for Pikes Peak Gun Club. It should be mentioned that the club management is very touchy about speeding. Please mind the posted speed limits while driving at the club. Because this is a new match I am expecting feedback on what went well and what didn't go well at the match. I need the feedback to improve the match in the future. So don't hold back.
The gate will be open at 7:00 for anyone who would like to help set up. Set up helpers, there in the berms, setting up by 8:00am will receive a discount for the match. If you plan to help set up, drive straight down to the berms. If you are not planning to help set up, then stop off at the clubhouse to sign in. The clubhouse will be open at 8:00 for check in, where you can also pay your entry fee. Because we are using the club house cash register, we can accept major credit cards. The club house is also well stocked with shotgun shells of various flavors. The club house will not have slugs for sale, so don't forget to bring some. 10 slugs should be all you will need. I will have a few Freedom Munitions slugs in my car, just in case someone comes without, but I don't have very many, so don't consider me a reliable source.
Also, I only have a few timers. They will of course be available, but if you have a timer, throw it in your bag, just in case we need it. Round count for this first match is 91 bird shot targets and 5 slug (3 paper, 2 gongs).
Craig Calkins will be conducting our new shooters briefing. If you have not shot USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge or 3 Gun before you should get there early to attend the new shooters briefing. Craig is a veteran competitor and is especially gifted with the shotgun. You will be in good hands, and the information he provides may save you from a DQ.
I will have a few Freedom Munitions slugs in my car, just in case someone comes without, but I don't have very many, so don't consider me a reliable source.
So if we bring a Lee Loader, some hulls and powder we can pull the slugs out of your car and reload them at the range?

Hey Gang,
The next local match is only a couple of weeks away. I wanted to send out this reminder to mark 10/18 on your calender to come out and have some run-n-gun, shotgunnin fun.
Couple of updates include:
1. By popular demand we will be doing single hit anywhere to neutralize slug targets
2. We will have squad sign up sheets at the check in table.
3. We are adding a few thrown birds this month. Nothing crazy hard, but few easier ones.
4. We are adding wooden fault lines, so no more caution tape.
5. There will be a couple of new target presentations this month (well new to us).
6. Round count is about the same. Roughly 90 bird shot and only 3 slugs this time.
Also, we would love to see some new faces at the match, so we are implementing a "Never Ever Pass". If you or someone you know has never shot 3gun or a practical shotgun match such as ours before... bring whatever shotguns you have and come try it out. Your first match is free. You still need to sign in at the club house, but just let the cashier know you are a Never Ever and we'll get you hooked up. We will make sure the Never Ever shooters get some extra coaching.

Match is this Sat 10/18. Looking forward to shotgunnin fun. Remember that chamber flags are required. Set up at 7:00, shooter's briefing at 8:00. About 90 bird shot targets and 4 slug targets. 2.75" lead shells only. If you have never shot 3gun or a practical shotgun match, tell the kid at the register that you are a "never ever" and your first match is on me.
