WASHINGTON — National security leaker Chelsea Manning can get initial treatment for a gender-identity condition from the military after the Bureau of Prisons rejected the Army’s request to accept her transfer from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to a civilian facility.Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has approved the Army’s recommendation to keep the Army private in military custody and start a rudimentary level of gender treatment, a defense official said Thursday. Defense officials have said the Army doesn’t have the medical expertise needed to give Manning the best treatment.
The initial gender treatments provided by the military could include allowing Manning to wear some female undergarments and also possibly provide some hormone treatments.
The decision raises a number of questions about what level of treatment Manning will be able to get and at what point she would have to be transferred from the all-male prison to a female facility.

But you wouldn't want this convicted traitor who should have been stripped of all rights except basic human rights, to go through his time in prison feeling confused or in a body that doesn't represent his mental gender...now would you?

My personal feelings are: You didn't get the sex change before you became a ward of the state, you can wait until after you are released to pursue getting it - on your own dime, not the taxpayers.

There you have it. Bonafide American patriotic. valorous veterans are denied care by the VA, but a convicted,traitorous POS gets gender re-assignment treatment, IN PRISON. God forbid we violate his/her/it's civil rights.

I say, put manning in gen pop for a while. He'll still be gender re-assigned, but it would cost the taxpayers a whole lot less.[pileoshit]

Okay, okay, I relent.

Let him have his gender re-assignment on the taxpayers dime. Instead of using the Army's or some civilian medical system, I say we add him to the list for care through the VA. With the current process he'll just have to continue to be re-added to the list every 6 months since they keep losing patients data, then with the existing backlog & wait times he should be seen for initial evaluation by the time he's ready for parole (when's that scheduled?...in about 50 years?)
