Always fun to watch.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor James Garner, whose whimsical style in the 1950s TV Western "Maverick" led to a stellar career in TV and films such as "The Rockford Files" and his Oscar-nominated "Murphy's Romance," has died, police said. He was 86.
He will be missed. Always seemed like a very likable guy. RIP.

From a time when men in Hollywood were men.
I recently watched 'The Racing Scene' on Amazon prime. Some great racing stuff with an off screen personal feel from Garner.

Sad news but he did some great work. He was great in Westerns as well as the Rockford Files but he'll always be Hendley (The Scrounger) to me.
I would point out he not only volunteered for the Merchant Marine near the end of WWII but served in the Army in Korea during the Korean War (twice wounded in combat). He was a hard worker and class act -- current Hollywood stars would do well to follow his example.

Support your local Gunfighter was funny, as were others he was in. A few good serious movies, like Up periscope, Darby's Rangers. etc

I liked just about all he did but especially Grand Prix and The Great escape, Support You Local Gunfighter.
And I just watched "My Fellow Americans" the other day... He was a great actor. "Will somebody go pick up blinky."
I didn't know he was still alive.
R.I.P. to one of the good one..
My favorite actor of all time.
I still watch The Rockford Files on Netflix.
For what it's worth...
"He voted for Adlai Stevenson in 1956, and calls him "the most intelligent presidential candidate we've ever had. I think Obama runs a close second."

Yeah, his political opinion was crap but he was still a fine actor with a strong work ethic and seemed like a decent human being. Obama fooled a lot of people and continues to do so.
I can agree with that. Fortunately his politics didn't show up in his movies.

I liked his acting. I think he was the first voice for "Beef, real food for real people". Might be wrong about that though.
I know he was on the Raiders sideline for every game back in the day.

That's Sam Elliott.
Garner was a spokesman for the beef council. It was the predecessor for "Beef, it's what's for dinner.". I even remember a plug he did for beef hot dogs.
...and then he had a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery and they dropped him like a hot potato.

Funny, he sounded like a Truman Democrat in this article but not the 70s-present Democrats he supported later:
Garner ... personally feels the situation is much like it was in Korea when General Matthew Ridgway addressed the troops and asked, "If you see a burglar coming, do you want to stop him at the back fence or wait until he gets into the house?""Here in Vietnam we couldn't wait for some sensational incident to happen or it would have been too late to help these people save their country from communism," Garner added.
Traveling solo around the country, he has arrived at the conclusion that "the morale here is about 100 percent higher than it was in Korea."
As for Hollywood and the war, Garner feels it will be some time before any pictures based on the Vietnam war are produced.
"There are a lot of technical problems — getting the right equipment, finding the right locations and such, but above all it is too soon. The pictures made about the Korean War didn't do well at the boxoffice, but World War II pictures are well received now."
I find his die-hard Democrat Party support hard to understand -- he seems like he would have been in the Reagan or Zell Miller camp of feeling the Democrat Party had left him behind -- but he was still a class act.

He also was a spokesman for Polaroid, Mazda and Kodak.
Loved this actor in both series.
The hypnotized never lie
Hendley "The Scrounger" was my favorite as well, he put his own recognized personality in all his roles. Like Heston, McQueen, John Wayne and others, he made an impact in Hollywood and peoples memories. I think he showed more humble, honest class than most actors past or present. Cool guy!
