Another forum member (Zach O) and I have started prototyping secret gun storage devices. A big thanks goes out to Irving for the inspiration. (Irving, we have a special deal for you if you want one by way of a thank you)

These pics are of the first prototype. It runs on 100# rated ball bearing slides, and it moves very smoothly. There are detents in the closed position so it doesn't creep open. It feels extremely sturdy on the wall. I didn't load test it by piling it up with weights from the gym, but it's more than strong enough for any typical decorator stuff plus the guns inside. This one measures 42" Wide, 13 1/2" Deep, and 6 1/2" Tall. The inside of the drawer is 38" Long, 11" Deep and 4 3/4" Tall. We pre-drilled it with three mounting holes on 16" centers, though you could add additional holes if your stud configuration didn't suit you.

Prototype number two just needs final assembly. It's sized for handguns and is 22" wide, 13 1/2" Deep and 5" Tall. It's sitting in a pile on the bench and I'm expecting to assemble and mount it tomorrow.

As we get going, we'll work on other colors and styles to match various types of decor. The material we used for this one is a brand new offering from one of our major suppliers. It's a textured melamine, and it's extremely cool in person. We've been using it for high end closets and the like, and it's a hit. It's even manufactured in Denver. We chose green simply because I had some left over from another job. It's available in 11 colors, and we're going to have to narrow that down to 2 or 3. If you'd like to see what's available and voice your opinion, we'd really value it.

http://www.premiereurocase.com/capabilities/roucke-hd

Almost immediately (like I'll probably run it on the CNC tomorrow), we'll try a primed and sanded version that will be ready for paint. Pick a rattle can color or use latex paint and have any color you like. I imagine we'll offer black pre-painted. We're thinking about some more traditional styles that aren't so contemporary. Once we get the initial stuff sorted out, I'll work on those pretty quickly. We may also think about locking mechanisms, but I don't see much of a need. They stay closed very well, and no one would ever guess of trying to pull a shelf off the wall. In fact, most people are a little bit reluctant to touch anything hanging on a wall for fear that it will fall off. I probably can't sit on this without breaking it, but I'll bet my daughter can.

Sweet what is the approximate price point? Any plans to incorporate a lock of some sort like magnetic or RFID for those with roommates or kids?

That's very cool, and you completed it VERY quick. Thank you for the shout out. I bet some gun case foam in there would be cool to keep everything in place. The only example of why you would need that though, is if you were having a rowdy house party and someone crashed into the shelf, or hit their head on it, and knocked a magazine over. Very impressive.

Also, that shelf looks like it'd look right at home as a fireplace mantel. How hard is it to protect that from heat?

Don't know about price yet, we have to get a feel for the labor on the painted versions. We will get two or three more prototypes built in the different sizes and the paintable versions, then we'll get some numbers out.

There are lots of ideas for locks from a simple unobtrusive pin to the more complicated magnetic locks. We'll be looking at it.

The painted version should stand up to the heat of being over a fireplace as long as you follow the guidelines in the building code. I wouldn't use one of these textured melamine versions in that application.

Would there be interest in a rustic style, maybe with a half log for the front face?

Of those colors, I like Durango, Basalt, and Vail. After that, maybe Cortez, Silverton, and Aspen. I imagine there will be people who want an option of the solid colors (Black, White, Slate).

Very interesting! There seems to be a lot of assorted furniture items with hideaways popping up. If anyone can come up with and produce similar Colorado-made items, it would be Tim K! We have another talented cabinet maker here too, who maintains a lower profile.

I have a set of these in my home:

My first thought when I unboxed them was "boy, there is a lot of wasted space in these. They could make really great hidden storage!"

Will you be doing specific sizes, or work with customer (within reason) ? We have SBR's as well as limited areas / spaces to install. Didn't think the spouse would be interested based on space limitations. Turns out she thinks we need one in every room. HOUSEHOLD EXPENSE, yeah baby.
Once you work out price point we can go from there.

I also worked on the idea for the magnetic catch, and I think it's going to work perfectly. I had to order some parts, so it will be a couple days before I have one of those ready for a video.

The painted versions got cut on the CNC today and are in the clamps drying. I'll get them assembled and sanded up tomorrow. Most likely, I'll prime one and leave it in that condition and paint the other black.

We're narrowing down pricing. The pistol size are going to be in the $175-$200 range. Rifle will be $200-$225. We have some fine tuning to do yet on the cost of materials and labor, but I think the final prices will fall in those ranges.

I'm sure someone will ask...the two tone is a 4" Wilson Combat aluminum frame bobtail, the full size is a Les Baer TRS.

rbeau30
07-22-2014, 21:30
I'd pay $225 for a rifle sized one.

How about a small metal plate attached underneath to store the magnet ?
I wouldn't want to be searching for the magnet at 0 - Dark thirty when I need quick access to the hidden firearms.

Magnetic latch parts will be arriving today. Zach and I will be working through the remaining production issues over the weekend, and we should be ready to rock next week if everything goes well.

My sister in law is Shari Saiki, one of the top, if not the #1 interior designer in Hawaii. She's here right now, so I asked her to choose the three colors we are going to offer in the textured pre-finished versions. Her taste is perfect. Here's a link to her site, just for the hell of it.

http://www.sharisaiki.com/designstudio/

She picked Vail, Summit, and Basalt. Congratulations to all of you who picked those same colors. You have good taste, too. They can be seen here:

http://www.premiereurocase.com/capabilities/roucke-hd

To be clear, we will not be offering the goofy green color of the prototypes. We used that material simply because we had it in stock.

A question to you all. Is there interest in a unit long enough to hold a home defense shotgun with a buttstock, not a pistol grip? It's going to end up something like 52"-54" long.

I don't have a need for hanging shelf like that but I'd probably think about keeping the shotgun in the living room if you start doing bookshelves or video shelves with a hidden recess.

If these are around $230 that is WAY cheaper than all the others I have seen around on the net.

The depth on the long one is just enough to fit an AR. The strength comes from the height. We could make the pistol version shorter, but I don't know that it would be strong enough. Short answer, no.

Now you just need to embed the magnet into the base of some sort of object that can be set around hidden in plain sight. Maybe have a matching pair of the objects... one to lock, one to unlock.

Something like a candle holder, or book end, or similar. Make them different lengths... the long one locks, the short one unlocks. Then you just grab your object from somewhere near by and lock/unlock it.

J

We're also working on making the mechanism lock automatically. That way, you don't need to reverse the magnet to lock it.

I'm still not sure why they don't just make the shelf portion the part that's fixed to the wall rather than have it being the moving part. Also creates a barrier between you and your gun of whatever is sitting on top given it hasn't come crashing down when you slide it open to access the firearm. I'm not bashing, just not sure if there's a good reason why they did it this way rather than that way since they didn't address my question the first time.

Exactly right. It's all about not having a telltale joint. We've also done many, many bookcases that hide gun rooms, panic rooms, and other interesting spaces. Lots of them for guys here. Our trademark is invisibility. I'd ask them to chime in here, but people with secret spaces typically don't want to advertise the fact. The construction method we are using makes it extremely difficult to detect that there is anything going on inside.

If this product sells as we expect once we get into our full marketing campaign, we will be looking at other designs and concepts. At that time, we will revisit all ideas and see which ones can be made to work up to our standards.

But you have a seam either way. Not sure why you can't have a seam where they line up and have it slide out like a drawer for all the reasons I've mentioned.

newracer

The was it is designed there is no seam visible on the front, just looks like a thick shelf. If you had a drawer open from the front you would see the seems on the side and the top of the pullout, it would be very obvious.

Awesome! When you have a rifle size shelf ready to go, let me know!

That is slick, with the magnet feature and the drawer being able to lock it looks as if someone may think its a real shelf if they were in your house rummaging through your stuff
