Any single shot handgun shooters?

For some reason I have a bug to pick up a rimfire single shot handgun for general plinking/varmint hunting. Not stuck on rimfire, but really like the 17 HMR but open to 223.

TCA's Encore or Contender line is probably the one most folks are familiar with, along with the Weatherby CFP, Ruger Charger, Savage Striker and the more obscure MOA Guns, Brown 97D and Freedom Arms 2008 Single Shot.

I have a Brown 97D rifle in 6.5 BRM and like the falling block design over the break action on the TCA but not a major issue. Affordable caliber swap on the TCA is an advantage, compared to MOA guns and FA.

Anyone have any experience behind one or more of these?

I tried a TC , for what it is, nice shooter. Just not my speed. Even gave the H&R single shot rifles a go. I will say, they are impressively accurate. There is different load data / specs for TC's.

Expect they are one of those weapons that you are gung ho about in the beginning, upgrade the heck out of it and then sell for a lot less money than you have in to it. It's all about giving someone else a good deal isn't it?

Would make varmint hunting a little more challenging.

I had a Contender for a while. Had several barrels in calibers like 30 Herrett, 7mm TCU, and 223 Akley. Had a few standard calibers as well and a 22 "match" barrel.

It is fun for longer ranges with the bigger calibers but I think I actually enjoyed making the ammo more than actually shooting the handgun.

If you were to get into something like IHMSA competition you would probably really enjoy the Contender. If it's just for a range toy or the ocassional hunting trip I would think you will get bored with it rather quickly.

I felt that way about the H&R in 223. That was a hell of a shooter. You pointed it at something, dead nuts on. Turned out to be one of those love hate things. Loved how accurate it was, consistently. Hated the Bang, open / eject, chamber, close action, bang.

Speer #10 has TC load data.

The charger fits the single shot bill if and when it's time to sell. Had a nice unit, threaded the bbl, nice red dot, nice shooter. Went to sell it..................[facepalm]They may be more popular now than 3 years ago. However if you tire of it, don't be upset if it's a slow sale.

I look at firearms as an investment. Rarely do they go anywhere. However IF i needed to sell them, would they or be one of those BTT for 2 weeks ? The charger like a 40 S&W is in camp 2.

Based on what I'm seeing on the boards, expect that is true.

This one started with a TI receiver with the remaining parts from KIDD. I've always been a sucker for a nice piece of wood and this splayed maple burl fits that nicely.

Another weapon I wouldn't get my money out of if I decided to sell but wouldn't want to ruin my reputation.

+1 to what's said about the Charger. They always intrigued me, but could never justify the cost/sell factor... I think single shots, as a whole, bring a different aspect to shooting that's good: discipline, timing, focus, etc. My theory is, if it shoots, it's good!!

The Anschutz Exemplar is a good option for sure. Hard to find now days, but a very fun and accurate 22.

My "Competitor" single shot pistol in .45/70 with factory muzzle brake just got traded off this week. Nice gun that I just HAD to have a few years ago but quickly got tired of it and don't reload .45/70 anymore. Adios Competitor.[blaster]
