View Full Version : Is a sport quad a bad idea for Colorado?

I'm looking into getting a quad. I'm on the fence between a utility atv and a full out sport. Would the 2x4 screw me if I wanted to go ride some trails in the mountains?
I like the speed that the sports have and the fact that they have a ton of suspension travel.

Does anyone here have a sport quad?

I don't own one but have ridden them. Kick ass fun!

Personally I'd get a utility for plowing, hauling elk flesh, firewood, etc. Once the money tree seeds sprout.....

2 completely different vehicles. You really need to figure out what type of riding you will do most. A sport is more like a motocross bike. Limited range, hauls ass, fun on open trails and jumps but wont like slow trails, climbing over obstacles, going to get stuck in some situations.

I have a utility quad and love it. But I do have a mx bike too.

The sport quads are fun on fast trails. They are utter crap on muddy or snowy trails. Had a borrowed one for a hunting trip once, was really almost useless.

If you get something like the renegade or the new scrambler 850 or 1000 then you will be happy. Something like a raptor will just beat the shit out of you in the mountains. Utility is much more comfortable and much more versatile.

you will have plenty of scare the crap out of you power if you get a 650+ size machine.
ive run canam 800xt maxx machines up to 75mph. The single seaters are just a touch faster.
the new 1000cc machines will blow your mind.

ive ridden a raptor up at central city and by Georgetown and hated it. Pure miserable riding, had to stand up most of the ride. A grizzly 700 on the same trails was very nice and comfortable. Canam is even better. Now my RZR is awesome for the three of us.

if you want to pay to go on tracks and jump and race, get a sport quad. If you want to ride in the mountains get a utility machine or the newer hybrids like the renegade or scrambler.

Several of my neighbors have sport quads but they go to the sand dunes mostly.

Always seems to be one or two in our group riding a sport quad. They do suck in snow and deep mud and we have to ocassionaly push or pull them out. But, at the end of the day, they always seem to make it back to camp just like everyone else.

Depends on the application. It you want to haul ass and hit jumps, they are great! It you want to crawl around on rocky terrain, they kinda suck.

Personally for colorado being basically all rocks I would never get one that didnt have independent rear suspension. 2 wheel drive will be fine for most riding but a solid axle rear end has a horrible ride quality and terrible ground clearance. Both honda and polaris make or made an independent rear sport quad. I would go 4x4 utility. Their weight makes them ride better, they can carry supplies for camping, and they have more uses.

I have on 01 Kawasaki Mule diesel. It tops out at about 15mph even though the book says it'll do 25mph. It isn't shy about going places it probably shouldn't be driven. And it'll carry an 1100 pound payload in the bed. It works for what I need. It won't get you anywhere fast but you can certainly take ALL your stuff with you. And I can't even imagine how good the fuel economy is...I'd have to guess in the neighborhood of 75-80 mpg. I almost never have to put fuel in the damned thing. Even has the original battery and still starts on the coldest day after not running for weeks.

Unless your only going to ride a track or sand dunes then get the sport quad. 99% of Colorado a utility quad works best.
Yamaha grizzly has my vote of course I'm biased and have 2

And if I want to do both? I'm guessing im going to have to try to get financing for a dirtbike and an atv! haha

The bigger utility quads will do 70
You'd be surprised how quick they are. The only things mine can't do are steep sand hills. (Walden) do yourself a huge favor and ride one.

I had a Honda TRX450 sport quad and we would ride up on the Rampart and Rainbow trails most of the summer. It was a blast in those trails and would make better time and give more excitement than a utility quad over that terrain. The more rocky technical trails made it tricky at times when a 4wd utility quad would have been better. When it got snowy a utility quad would have been better.

Now I ride a modded crf450x and wouldn't go back to a sport quad. If I did buy a a quad these days I'd get a utility one for hunting.

A friend of mine has an Arctic Cat 550 utility. Limited at 64mph. It did a pretty good job of trying to kill me once... Good machine though.

Sport quads are a blast. We have always taken a few up to the mountains on our camping trips. If you plan on constantly taking passengers, it may not be the best choice. For most trails in Colorado, 2WD ATV will just fine.

You will enjoy that every where you go. Great machine for CO. But you will wonder what the 1000 would have been like[Coffee]

That looks fun! We will have to hit the trails together sometime. Might take me awhile to get up to your skill level, I was a dirt bike guy for years but I figured I'd try something new.

Sounds like we might need to get a group ride together. I just joined the club with an '09 Brute Force 750.

I always have weekends off so that works for me. I like to ride in WY like Tin does as well.
