View Full Version : Thinking
Thinking about selling/trading my GSG-5 for a dedicated 22lr upper......whats the consensus?
Thanks,
J
The GSGs have a pretty high CDI/Ninja factor. If you get a 22 uppr, be sure you get a Tactical Solutions or a Spikes.
I like the GSG and mine is pretty much done as far as Ninja factor but I have a hard time with how toyish it is.
Plus I'm getting tax stamps for the lower for multi caliber SBR and maybe a suppressor or two or three......
Just been wondering if its worth it to go with a dedicated upper and the reliability with that.
Got a Spikes dedicated upper. Well made, fun and cheap to shoot. Break in for me was around 100 rnds, a few stove pipes and ftfs. Now it eats everything from the Wally value packs, Winchesters, CCI etc. I like it because I can put it on any of my lowers.
Never shot a GSG though

IT's cool to have a .22 upper and all, but really, is it neccessary? I mean, I bought an AR cause it's a relativley high powered rifle.
If I wanna shoot .22, i'd just bust out one of my Rugers.
I guess you wanna look cooler than all the others while shooting at the USOC, then hell, get one!!
That being said, do you guys prefer dedicated uppers, or do the CMMG conversions work just as well.

I am totally down with the .22 upper it just makes sense to me. I want to shoot more often, but I want to pay 2005 ammo prices. Until the price of ammo comes down... I think it would better training by shooting twice as much for half the cash.
I want to know which to buy: Spike's or Tactical Solutions?
Who has them? Which is better? What configuration?
Spike's wins on flash factor but I want it to shoot straight. Period.
Please enlighten me I want to buy one in a week or two. Or sell me yours.

I didn't buy it for the cool factor or to show off at the range, just the simple fact that I wanted to shoot my AR's and not spend a mint on the ammo. It's definitely not the same as shooting 556, but at least you get some good repetitions with you weapons. Mine shoots straight, can put some decent groups at 50 yds. Heard good things on Tac Sol and the CMMG conversions. I went with Spikes because of the quality and customer service. I actually talked with Tom(Spikes armorer) a few times to figure out what configuration worked best for me. All I can say is read as much as you can, theres a lot out there.

Trey,
What barrel and setup did you get from Spike's?
How is it at 100 yards?
How long did it take for Spike's to get it to you?
Thanks!
I have a 16 inch Lothar Walther barrel, with the 10 inch DD lite rail.
Only shot at 100 yds a few times, not too accurate, around 6-8 inch groups.
After talking with Tom I ordered in Oct 08, he said 2 months due to volume of orders. 2 weeks later I get a call from Spikes saying they finished and it was shipping out that day!! Came with instructions on what to expect with break in issues and ammo recommendations.

If I had it to do over again, I might consider a dedicated upper.
I have the Nordic AR-22 10/22 conversion and it works very well.

I am putting together a Not-So-Dedicated upper. My Gunsmith talked me into building a cheap upper that is still chambered 2.23 5.56. This way I have a something that will shoot .22lr, but could still be a real rifle at the end of the day (or if something breaks). I have all the parts less the BCG.
I bought the CMMG .22lr conversion from Mike at Bowers Tactical in DTC (big thumbs up). When I get it back from the smithy I will post my experience and hopefully some pics and range report.
The only drawback so far has been trying to find reasonably priced AR parts lately. A lot of phone calls and driving.

I completed my "not-so-dedicated upper!
It went to the mountains this weekend and it performed awesome. It is a Brownells upper, 16" 5.56 barrel 1x9, FSB, carbine gas system, forward assist, charging handle, Matech BUIS. Fits good on my lower and you just drop in the CMMG kit and away you go. BCM mags worked good (I broke them in before going).
We did do some work to the CMMC Kit/BCG. We cleaned it (CMMG test fires the kit), and lubed the 5.56 casing on the kit with choke tube lube. This is the piece that can get lodged in you chamber and be a pain to remove. clean of the excesse and CLP the carrier. I also cycled the mechanism a bunch, both in the rifle and removed with just my fingers. I heard a lot about break-in and wanted to avoid it with both the kit and the mags.
1 FTF / FTE out of 70+ rounds.
Probably my fault, it was like the 3rd round and I couldn't imagine that there was enough energy to load another round, so I pulled the charging handle back to check and there was a round in the chamber, closed it and then I got the FTF.
3 Mags Fired 1 of Each:
CCI Velocitor
Winchester Super-X HV / HP
American Eagle HV / HP
Lots of fun!!
I cant believe how little pop and recoil there is. It was trippin me out. I had to shoot some 5.56 to make sure I still had my ear protection on.

I dont know how accurate it is or will ever be. I only bore sighted it with no optic. I just wanted to see how if it would work, and what ammo it liked (if any). It shot great in rapid fire and functioned well generally. I will take it to the range soon and try to get a better idea of how accurate it can be, as well as shoot some 5.56 through it for testing.
But as far as putting those left over parts to use and having a near exact mockup of your tactical or service rifle it is really nice. I am free-floating my good rifle and the rail and grip are going on the .22lr. Not to mention the project pays for itself on after a couple of cases of ammo. And you have a spare, backup, or parts upper ready to rock!
Ended up being about the same cost as a dedicated .22lr upper from Spike's or TacSol.
Later,
Pedro
