View Full Version : I hope this works.
The car wash at the gas station knocked my fuel door off. Instead of paying the $300ish that the dealership wants to replace it I went Ace Hardware and got some supplies...

JB Weld Plastic Bonder, sandpaper, fiberglass mesh, and a clamp.
The clamp didnt work out but everything else seems to be working.

Once it sets a little more I'm going to sand it down and lay another layer of fiberglass and epoxy. The back side hardly has any epoxy on it at all. Getting both sides at the same time was tough.
I hope this works. It seems to be working pretty well.

The plastic bonder works a LOT better if you rough up the bonding area really good. And make sure the surfaces are clean.
Duct tape. You forgot it.
1. Why isn't the car wash paying for this.
2. Why are you driving a plastic car.
3. Next time, use some mylar and you'll have a smooth repair.

1. Why isn't the car wash paying for this. HE left it open[Coffee]
2. Why are you driving a plastic car. better fuel mileage than his F350
3. Next time, use some mylar and you'll have a smooth repair. I would have suggested some fine wire mesh for better adhesion.
I didn't leave it open... The car wash popped it open.
They won't pay for any damages. There's a sign on the front of it that says so.
It's roughed up really well.

Don't encourage him. The Epoxy craze will run circles around the spray on bed liner crowd.
We coulda made you a real cool aluminum one, be the envy of all the little car peeps.
Haha. I know it's ridiculous. But I don't wanna spend any more money than I have to. $25 isn't bad. Especially when $9 of that was the clamp. I could probably even return it given that it didn't work out.

The jb and loctite epoxy stuff works real good as long as you do the prep right. Looks good
You could have taken this opportunity to upgrade to some sort of bilett fuel door or something. Probably would have added at least ten horsepower.
Is that a mil-spec fuel door or just one of the commercial type? Billet is much better than forged, especially if you want your car to be tacticool.
I would right your name and number on it. That way the person that finds it can bring it back to you. I'd paint over the repair after it is done, most epoxies don't like UV rays. Looks good and good for people that still fix things. Thumbs up to you.

Drive 'merican and this shit doesn't happen.
Was this a touch car wash?
You couldn't just leave it open?
Sheesh, next thing you know, you'll be telling us that ejection port dust covers are really important or something.

Was this a touch car wash?
I don't think that's an appropriate question. Maybe one of those "chat rooms" . Not here
Show us where the car wash touched you.

Do they make an aftermarket aluminum/chrome one for it on ebay?
It's a Jetta..... The epoxy and everything is on the inside of the door.

Looks like they hit you in the right, rear, quarter panel. I've never been hit in the parking lot, but I bet that would hurt.[gohome]
