View Full Version : FU Denver... How does this ticket work?

So today I worked a 12 hr shift over at the Filmore, and for those unaware, the entire surrounding area in vicinity around Colfax just east of Downtown has street parking from 8AM-6PM limited to 2 hours. Due to me working at the venue and parking pretty much non-existent in that area, I had to park on the street and get a street parking permit from my boss. No problem. All set, and should have been an easy day at work. Wrong. Go out to my car around 3 this afternoon and this is what I see:
47953
The dreaded yellow City and County of Denver Parking Violation envelope. Effing really? I took this picture so I can go contest it. Even if it gets tossed that's still a drive down to the Wellington Webb building, paying for parking, and then spending who knows how long to get them to throw it out... if they do. If they don't I have to pay the fascist Parking Violations Bureau? Or refuse and risk getting booted next time I'm at work... Is there a way to get in touch with someone and complain about the absolutely blind parking enforcement a-hole?

Who issued the street parking permit? Why should the city of Denver honor that permit?

Just curious. I have no dog in that fight. I've gotten my fair share of parked 15 minutes after the meter expired tickets in Denver.

If you look at the picture it states at the top it's from the City and County of Denver. My guess is that they give Argus the permits for employee parking... otherwise, if I can't legally park then how can I get to work?

Light rail.

I passed up working for the CBI just because it was located in down town Denver. I picked a job for less money.

RTD?

Brownies, or ticket writers generally don't care about anything other than the status of the meter. I've found this to be true in most cities.

It wasn't at a meter though, it was street side, so the snake in the grass had to scope out the parking, which they did a mere minute or so after I parked, and then issued the ticket after my 2 hrs had expired... however, in that two hours I placed the parking permit on my dash.

Denver parking enforcement are real offensive and stupid little gits. I think that they intentionally write bad tickets for giggles.

you gotta see the parking "judge" they should throw it out ... but of course you have to spend the time doing that .. royal pain I know ...

as for booting you can only be booted for 3 or more outstanding parking tickets.

Pay the fine .. cheaper then the time spent at the parking judge

park down by 16th a block or two over in the residential area... I don;t think they have resident permits down there... but read the signs before you walk away .

And Welcome to the joys of working the Filmore/Ogden/ Bluebird .... been doing that dance for 15 years.

We got nailed ten minutes after out meter expired. We parked at the meter on Blake street for a concert at Summit Music Hall. Every time we go to see that specific band we get ticketed. I've just started to figure in the $25 fine with the rest of the cost. When did the rules for parking downtown become so %$$#^# complicated?!

Actually, I worked with a guy that lasted about 3 months with parking enforcement. They have a very high quota of tickets to write otherwise they get in trouble. He complained about other parking enforcement people poaching in his area just because of the high quota.

Have you talked with your boss about it and see if he has connections to get it taken care of, either dropped or paid?

What's that saying, Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law ??

I hate that ignorant saying, even the lawyers can't keep up with the flood of laws how the hell am I supposed to? I'd venture that every damn one of us breaks at least one law everyday and in some cases without even being aware of it but hey, we don't care it was legal last week and your "ignorance" is no excuse when we're trying to swipe your money!

Ronin13
08-06-2014, 11:11
For those saying this is a case of "Ignorance of the law is no excuse"... umm, can you read? I stated (and even put up a pic) I had a City of Denver issued parking permit for negating the 2 hour limit on street parking. So yeah, I was following the law, I am not the one to blame in this case as this was an erroneous ticket. So don't be dumb. :)

Sorry Jim, that one and "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear" are two that peg my BS meter, nothing personal.

Agree HBAR, they have you by the short & curlies and most folks don't even know it. Or worse know it and think it's okay like the prison guard union lobbying against pot legalization.

It may be cheaper (time spent waiting at traffic court) to pay the fine. It looks like it was raining when the meter Nazi wrote the citation, probably did not get out to look before writing. You might be able to scan the permit and send a copy to the referee.

BOulder parking enforcement is far worse than Denver.
Boulder has a campus parking ticket people and City of Boulder parking ticket people. Expired meter Parking ticket during mid-late 90s were about $15. However, even 1-2minutes late, we get them. I've seen a city of Boulder parking guy (again, during late 90s) who ticketed a vehicle with 2 minutes remaining on the meter.

UPDATE: looked into the matter, sent an email to the parking violations bureau and they'll send me something in the mail once they decide. Hoping they just throw it out. It's a matter of principle, dammit!

You should start working on that personality flaw now before you get sworn.

It is a very gray world out there and after 25+ years it gets harder to even see the light gray any more.

Be safe.

You guys are complaining about 10-15 minutes after your meter expires and getting a ticket???

I've had two this year alone that were 2 minutes after the meter expired. In fact, one of those I put money in my meter and the guy rolled up and shoved it in my door as I was putting the money in (was after 10 PM so the 2 hour rule didn't apply). I wouldn't be surprised if they have some sort of notification system when a meter goes red.

I've had 5 parking tickets since 1/1/14.

^^^ This, makes me glad I live in the country- Since I have acres of land at home, it always irks me to pay for a single parking space, even when there is no fine.

See the two lights above the green button? One is red and one is green. The red one starts blinking the second time expires. The parking Jeep drives the same 4-6 blocks and catches them quick!

Does DPD write parking tickets as well? Last spring we were parked over on Platte off of 15th and headed back to our car with about 2 minutes left on the meter. When we got to the car there was just under 1 minute left and there was a patrol car parked about 3 feet from our rear bumper. We got in the car and drove off with just a few seconds to spare.

The patrol car followed us till we got back on I-25 headed South. I felt like he was pissed off he didn't get to write the parking ticket but who knows; may have just been a coincidence.

I believe the permit is issued to a specific individual or vehicle. I'm sure they looked up the permit, the plates of the vehicle and Ticket!

Parking Magistrate @ Wellington Webb building, most likely not much of a wait, they run them through pretty quick I believe. If you go, let me know so I can see in person how this plays out.

RARELY will DPD write a parking ticket most officers feel it is "below" them . but the old you piss a cop off... or if his commander is getting heat from the neighbor hood... things happen.

smart meters these days signal their paid or expired status wirelessly to a central system that helps plan the parking enforcement sweeps to get to expired meters quickly and ignore streets where the meters are paid up for now. Wouldn't surprise me if there were sensors of some sort to know if a car was parked in the spot, too

There are some downtown. It won't allow you to feed the meter with moving the parked car.

I got a ticket in Denver while working, flashers on, about to boom up. Street sweeping day don't you know. And the sweeper just went by. I don't know anyone with a car who thinks fighting a ticket is worth the trouble.

still going. Pay the ticket and move on. Making sure you have the correct permit in plain sight when parked. However like other states/ cities across the country. the meter readers are an entity unto them self.
