Bad bite: A tick can make you allergic to red meat
By Marilynn Marchione
The Associated Press
© August 7, 2014 A tick bite might make you a vegetarian, or at least make you swear off red meat.
Doctors across the nation are seeing a surge of sudden meat allergies in people bitten by Lone Star ticks, which are found in the Southwest and eastern half of the U.S.
This bizarre problem was only discovered a few years ago but is growing as the ticks spread to more areas. Eating a burger or steak landed some people in the hospital.
The bugs harbor a type of sugar humans don't have but that is found in red meat. The tick bite conveys the sugar to the bloodstream, and the immune system can go overboard reacting to the foreign substance.
Doctors say the allergy is one more reason to avoid ticks.

Similar in the sense that a disease caused a food problem - my lymphoma caused this weird reaction with alcohol. Drinking (even 1/2 of a beer) would give me an absolutely disabling headache. I don't suffer from migraines, but that sort of idea. Did a literature search on it and the reaction is rare, but there have been reported cases of alcoholism cured by this reaction, although I wouldn't recommend cancer as a treatment for alcoholism! Once I was in treatment, I could slowly add beer back. :)

Unless you've never met a chigger. Little red bastards...

Got practically eaten alive by chiggers around Midlothian, TX. That really sucked.

...but I really love me some steaks, burgers, and brisket and can't imagine not being able to eat those again.

Eh. Whatever. You'd just have to start barbecuing chicken instead.

I'd rather keep chicken in the 'also' category and not make it an 'exclusive'.

My folks live in a majorly tick infested area of Missouri. I need to pass this on to them. Eating red meat there is like breathing air.

Don't worry. They are probably immune to it.

I've been bit my millions or maybe billions of mosquitos in my life time. I don't fear getting bit and am pretty sure there's no way I could get west Nile. Pretty sure my body has built up a tolerance to anything a mosquito could give me.

I'm sure it's the same for them and ticks.

Famous last words. I'm the same way.
