Now there is a fire truck, an ambulance, and two police units.

Never a good sign. Until some of our "older" neighbors, crossed over. The EMS folks be on the block 2-3x a week.

They aren't that old. Maybe fifty to fifty-five.

Well, some lady in a normal vehicle wearing normal clothes just pulled up and is talking to the police. She has some sort of paperwork and a brief case type thing.

Not looking good. The guys daughter just came pulling up at about 90mph, slammed her vehicle in park, and jumped out and ran past the police towards the house.

That's a coroner's office investigator. The coroner doesn't show up on dead peeps typically. Just watch for the white van and the body snatchers to show up!

No. And the police are still here. I have a sinking feeling the coroner's van might show up soon.

These are the neighbors I actually like. The ones I talk to frequently. The ones who's youngest daughter went to school with my son.

I hate to think the worst but it doesn't make sense why the police are still here, some lady in an unmarked car in business attire is still inside the house, and the guys daughter hauled ass up in a big hurry.

I'm comfortable ruling out the murder/suicide thing. They are two of the nicest people you could know. They are hippies too. Pretty sure neither of them have a violent bone in their body. Plus, some of their family members have been showing up and are entering the residence.

Update. Sorry for the delay.

So, it appears my neighbor, Rodger, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes. I've been in contact with his widow and his 22 year old step daughter who he helped raise since she was four and is the only father she knew. They are both doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. The daughter gets out of the navy in a few more months and is going to move back in with her mother to help her out. Of course, I have offered to help her out if there is anything she needs. I even made a pot of chili and brought it to her the other day.

The funeral was today and the wife and I attended as well as our son and his fiancé. It was the first funeral I felt compelled to attend that wasn't a close friend or relative. I typically don't like neighbors but they have always been different. Their daughter and my son are the same age and went to school together so she was always over at the house growing up. I didn't know Rodger all that well but I know I will miss having him as a neighbor.

There are those in our lives who've touched us through one or two huge acts. There are those, like your neighbor Rodger, who've touched our lives through many, many small acts over time. Their presence, while easy to dismiss and take for granted, is engrained in the fabric of our lives. We don't understand why, but when something happens to them, we feel it. We feel it deeply.

You may not have been what we traditionally consider "close", but in a way you were and you, too, need to grieve. Maybe all this will be is something like standing in an empty room where you'll raise a glass on toast to his life and memory. Do this so that you can move on and provide better aid to his family.
