Anyone know of a place local that sells ak flats?

Flats... I would try here: http://ak-builder.com

Kits, either at AK builder or Apex: https://www.apexgunparts.com

Give Apex a call. I don't believe they run a regular store but may make an exception for a pick up. Always pays to call.

I've been using ak builder, just got a flat in today and messed it up. Trying not to have to wait a week for a new one. Was hoping someone might have had them at a local store.

Gave up and just ordered from ak builder. Hope its the last time for this build.

How did you mess the flat up?
I have repaired a few that I have boogered up instead of shelling out and getting another.

My guide pieces, using the grasshopper jig, weren't straight and when I put it in the press it caved in. Tried to straighten it out and didn't work, then noticed the bend wasn't even. So tried to make it a flat again amd ended up flattening out the top rails and just gave up from there.

I'm not going to use the press amd use the screw method to pull it through like the last one I bent. That one actually almost made it to be a complete ak until I failed to think out the way I was pressing on the rear sight and caved the entire reciever over.

Live and learn, hope this one is the last for the build.

Probably would have went better if I had, guess I'll see how it goes on finishing it up tomorrow. Just need to finish up some trimming and fine tuning so the bolt rides smooth. Here's to hoping I don't end the day tomorrow wishing I'd just have bought a stupid wasr instead.

balyon885

Guess kids in Afghanistan can build ak's in a cave but I can't seem to build one in my garage. I give up, should have just bought a stupid WASR. Would have been cheaper and saved me the frustration of another failed project.

I have some 80% polsaki bends, needs rails and holes drilled. You drive up, pay me a few federal reserve notes, take them home. tripped over 1 yesterday. It has to go, cause i'm not putting it away.

I appreciate the offer, but sadly I now need more than a reciever to get a built gun out of the mess I have left. I'm going to leave the ak building to others.

What all do you need? I have a ton of extra parts as do others here.

balyon885

A bunch, probably a new parts kit with my luck.

OneGuy67

If you were more specific, we can help. You need trunnions? What?

balyon885
08-17-2014, 13:38
The barrel is now bent, who now's about the front trunion, the front sight block is bust, a bfh can do alot when one gets frustrated. I'm going to just call it what it is and leave it as a failed attempt. I have the welder, drill press and shop press, if I ever decide ro do another down the road I will just start from scartch. Thanks for trying ton help though. I bit off more than I could chew it seems.

Okay! We have people here who taught me how to build them. Reach out when you are ready.

balyon885
08-17-2014, 15:10
I sure will. I watched alot of videos in YouTube and thought I had a grasp of it. I had a reciever bent and seemed good to go. Got the trunion in, barrel pressed in, headspaced and pinned. Was on a roll, then when I tried to press the rear sight on I wasnt thinking and pressed it using the reciever, that was dumb. Ruined it and was all down hill from then on.

Great-Kazoo
08-17-2014, 18:58
and the bbl is bent, how? if you're that torched over it and interested in selling it as a parts kit only. It's not beneath me to say i have an interest AND cash. Or you can try fixing it

A big hammer in the wrong spot, and its history. Lol. Not much of anything to sell. Its a loss.

front & reat trunnions, trigger guard, gas block. There's lots of scrap, you jius haven't seen it yet.

balyon885
08-17-2014, 21:28
True, one day I will try again I'm sure. I just need to take some time away. I want a quality full-size ak to go with my little one. Guess I just need to take more time and get a better jig to bend my flat.

Sucks to hear about your build. It's a hard way to learn what not to do,but that's how I learned as well.
Before you go building another one get together with some of us who have done some building and sit in on a build and learn.
That is also how I learned by doing small stuff before attempting a full on build.

And you can recoup some of your loss by selling off the parts, you'd be surprised at what's salvageable.

balyon885
08-17-2014, 22:30
I wouldn't mind seeing someone build one. I think my biggest hang up was the flat bending. Even this last one didn't bend perfect, then the center support ended up crooked. Things just kept messing up and the bolt was jumping the rail and getting stuck. The rest, well was history. If I ever see a cheap pattrsn kit I might try again.

Guess a drive to the Springs would have been cost effective in hindsight.

Well Rob I'll keep you posted when I get ready to do another and you can come down and watch.
Also bring your basket case and we'll see if anything can be salvaged.

Now I have a few of the Polskis myself, and never did build on them yet. I know the top rails have to be trimmed,I have the scribe jig to do it with and the holes shouldn't be hard to measure out. But will these heat treat like other flats? I have been hearing all different things on them and never tried yet--Paging Rachel Ray....

Have to clean them good, before hand. Remember install / spot weld rails BEFORE Heat treating.

I've heard that the polish blanks can be finicky to heat treat. There is a guy the akfiles that has it down to a science aand sells them heat ttreated with rails.

My internet is down right now so I'm limited to a phone otherwise I'd link the guy's website

Centerfire systems has kits at decent prices. Might want to check them out. Complete kit with barrel, minus receiver- $320.

Why does that site show a restriction to CO on the AMD65 kit?

If it's an amd kit you want this one has a much better barrel since it's the correct length also they are professionally installed and headspaced centerfire barreled kits now days are cut up warranty return guns from century generally.

if you're looking for just the cheapest kit with a barrel then I'd get this if I were you

or this

I kinda want an amd front with a fixed stock back end. Weird and defeats the reason of the amd, but I think it be a good looking hybrid. I'm not sure if I'd go with the pinned 12.5 or 14.5. I already have the M92 sbr, so wouldn't want to go that route with another build.

Going to have to wait a month or two, but the urge to build one is still there.

I'm not a fan of the amd rear folding stock either. I might have a 3.5 / 4" amd f/hider. The 1.5/2" ones are easy. Any AK f/hider will do. I did a few tack welds (per ATF) on my draco prior to NFA approval.

balyon885

If I did a folding stock, I'd get the ak builder ace stock trunion. That would make a pretty decent "modernized" amd.

What ever you do. Please do not put something that requires use of an AR stock.
