I wonder what type of pistol managed to go off like that ?
http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/motorcyclist-shot-by-his-own-gun-during-bizarre-hit-and-run-collision-in-black-hawk
In a bizarre chain reaction, Black Hawk police say a motorcyclist was shot in the chest when a gun he was carrying went off as a hit-and-run car struck the motorcycle. The hit-and-run happened about 10:15 a.m. at Highway 119 and Richman Street in Black Hawk.
A four-door Chevrolet sedan hit the motorcycle and the rider was thrown to the ground, Police Chief Stephen Cole told 7NEWS. The impact of the collision caused a handgun the motorcyclist was carrying to fire, shooting the rider in the chest.
The Chevy driver fled the scene. The motorcyclist, a 60-year-old Pennsylvania man, suffered serious injuries and was rushed by ambulance to a Denver hospital. Police recovered the handgun at the scene, Cole said.
Gilpin County sheriff's deputies later found the Chevy sedan abandoned at a campground north of Black Hawk. The driver, a white man in his 30s or 40s, ran from the car. He was wearing a black T-shirt and black shorts.
Police arrested the hit-and-run suspect about 1:30 p.m. after he was spotted near Highway 119 and Gap Road north of town.
During the search for the driver, authorities sent emergency telephone notifications to residents in the area.
Hit and Run drivers are the worst. I hope he chokes in his cell.
Hmmm.. Shot himself in the chest? Maybe a derringer (most don't have trigger guards) in some sort of odd concealed holster? Any other concealed weapon would be pointed downward at the waist.. Unless he had the gun in some sort of tank mounted bag or something.

unless it was in an upper pocket of his riding jacket....
one of mine would fit a compact Glock or 1911 with ease and be more comfortable then waist carry while riding .

True.. Didn't think of that.

Dang. All hit and run drivers should hang.

Half the bikers I know seem to love those Bond two-barrel derringers. Usually in that silly .45 Colt/.410GA configuration. [facepalm]

It was rumored I often kept a derringer in an inside vest pocket years past.
Anyone else think the hit and run problem in Colorado has gotten a little out of hand?
This is ridiculous. Seems like every other day we hear of a hit and run involving injuries. I wonder how many other hit and runs happen that don't involve injuries...

A lot. It's very common.
Two weeks ago as I was coming back from Blackhawk and a Blazer coming up the canyon came across the center line and hit the car two vehicles in front of me almost head on. He tore the left front wheel and tire completely off his blazer and yet he still swerved around me and took off up the canyon. I went back a couple days later and it appears all from the oil running out of the engine the vehicle stopped about a mile up the road. At the time I went down the canyon and found a cop giving a ticket and informed him of the incident and the hit and run. I have never seen anything about it anywhere in the news.

It probably just wasn't in a proper holster and the trigger caught on something during the collision. Lots of wild forces at play with a collision like that too.
I've probably handled well over 100 hit and run claims in the few years I handled auto claims.

We got the call. Our kids school was on "soft lockdown" for a few hours.

Used to carry a walther PPS in my riding jacket: perfect size.... I did not have it on me during my accident, and it was for the best since I fell on my left side.
I've always found it ironic that liberals get so worried about private gun sales yet they think nothing of private car sales. You don't even have to ask If someone is legally allowed to drive when selling a car. $1,000 and Craigslist and anyone has a 3000 lb torpedo. With all the hit and runs, where's the outcry from the left for "common sense regulation". All of a sudden when you present the idea that all car sales should be run through a dealer, pay a fee for background check (even if you show a valid license) and then you can require everyone show proof of insurance at time of purchase, it doesnt sound as good. Not to mention, cars aren't scary looking...
May only be a matter of time until that happens though. :(
Pretty crappy day right there. Hope the guy pulls through and the idiot who hit him gets man handled
Copied this from a text I sent someone awhile back. I wish I had the link still.
Mary Dulacki, a spokesperson from the city’s Department of Safety, told FOX31 Denver that in 2013 there were 5,447 hit-and-run accidents reported in Denver. The number included everything from minor property damage, to serious bodily injuries and fatalities, she said. That averaged about 15 hit-and-run accidents per day in 2013.

I just spoke with a Black Hawk Police Officer. He said the guy had a "single action revolver" and he was only grazed by the bullet.

Hit and runs are a huge problem in CO. We're one of the worst states for this statistic. It's bad enough that the legislators more than tripled the statute of limitations on it.

Something with a fixed firing pin and a live round under the hammer took a hammer hit?

That'll do it every time...
Probably a NAA mini. Very popular with bikers, and the older versions did not have safety notches in the cylinder. You're supposed to carry the old ones with the hammer on an empty chamber, but of course no-one ever seems to do that.

I'd also add the guy was riding a BMW touring bike..... not your "classic" "Biker"

NAA mini just disappears in a vest pocket. Lots of guys carry them. They are stainless steel and can be chambered for 22WMR. They're pretty good within their limitations.

Just putting this out there but has anyone asked the question, huge increase of marijuana and now huge increase in volume of hit and runs? Perhaps we have a bunch of stoned drivers who actually don't know they are hitting people, or they are running because they know they are high?
just saying
They had a piece on this problem on the news last night. Colorado has the 9th highest rate of uninsured drivers in the country at 16% (roughly 1 in 6), and the 14th highest rate of hit-and-run incidents. Anecdotal evidence puts the rate of uninsured hit and run drivers somewhere between 33 and 50 percent, based on the ones that are apprehended, with similar numbers being unlicensed, suspended, or previously revoked.

Don't believe the hype...
Its just more "News" coverage of hit-and-runs.
Like shark attacks, avalanches and Ebola.
There may not be more actual hit-and-runs, but REPORTED hit and run crashes are up over 30% since 2009.
Don't worry, now that illegals can have licenses, those uninsured rates will drop.
/Sarcasm.

No. Hit and run had always been common. Of course so had pot. When you hit someone and don't know, you don't usually drive 80mph in the oncoming Lane of a residential Street.

There's still a problem. A problem we may not have been aware of till now. But still a problem.
It be nice if lawmakers would address real issues, like hit and run, instead of imaginary ones like guns.... Oh well. A man can dream.

Except that studies have shown marijuana does not impair driving significantly. Now, if you mix drugs, like alcohol and marijuana, that's different.

Hmmm, my past personal experience from years ago would disagree with that assumption.
sent from a soup can and some string..
I think it'd be more likely that the hit and run driver would be afraid of the DUI after the accident.

I understand. I do think scientifically a personal testimony typically overrides control group trials.

This is what I would assume to the case as well.
What are the CCW rules, as related to an out of state person on a motorcycle? Is it treated in a similar manner as if the firearm were in a car?
What really boggles my mind are the number of vehicles that run into buildings.....

Clearly if you're blazed out of your mind it will affect you more. I don't have the original stories I read like a decade ago or anything. Most cases of accidents, fatal or otherwise, where the person is high on THC, they're also often drunk as well. Bad idea to mix any drugs. Not the greatest idea to drive high, but seems to have less effect than other ones out there.
