View Full Version : BigBears' Intensive, Project Appleseed, v2014

BigBear

I am proud to announce that we are a "go" for the 2015 Appleseed Intensive.

Who: 6-8th graders
What: Constitutional History and the Revolutionary War week long lab class, with a day at the range
When: March 16-19, 7:30 a.m. -3:45 p.m.
Where: Classroom for Mon/Tues, range on Wed, presentations on Thurs
Why: Those who do not know history...

Details: With the gracious and awesome help of Project Appleseed and other volunteers, we have several Revolutionary War re-enactors come out and talk about military/civilian life during the time period. In class we learn of the history surrounding the Revolutionary War; why it happened in relation to the "three strikes" and the founding of our nation and the Constitution. The kids have projects such as learning about symbols through making their own flags, they learn to cast wax bullets, in-depth stories/discussions that just don't have the time to be covered in a traditional history class, firearm safety and basic marksmanship skills and how they relate to our founding as a country, and the such. We learn about rifles and have a hands on demonstration of different firearm types. We also have a "range day" where we review the basics of firearm safety and marksmanship (how to shoot, different positions) using live ammo on .22lr rifles. Kids also have the opportunity to try some larger calibers if everyone is in agreement.... This year I would love to get a cannon out there the kiddos can fire off, maybe some surprise tannerite... I don't know, lots of ideas to make it fun (BUT SAFE!).

Needs: We could use some donations in monetary form (hoping to raise around $2K to cover the cost of getting people in, insurance/etc paperwork, classroom supplies, reserving the range, etc), ammunition (22lr only), and volunteers to help out with the range day (and who are also more than welcome AND encouraged to come to the classroom portions as well). It was a huge hit last year, this year will be bigger and better. If you've ever wanted to attend an Appleseed shoot but weren't sure about it, here is your chance to check them out!

Financial donations may be given to me via paypal or mailed directly to the school. If you choose to send to the school PLEASE contact me first so we can make sure they go to the correct intensive or it might just get thrown into the "general fund" which means we will never see it again. Contact me for more information.

So, questions/comments/concerns/etc... let me hear them. Thanks for your time.

Thank you,
Tim aka BigBear

Thread made sticky as requested. When do you need donations by? I'm in for at least something, cash and ammo. Currently figuring out job situation, so I won't know how big that something can be until that is more solidified. Shouldn't be too long.

Also, any idea on the ability to write off donations on taxes?

This was Craver MS in Colorado City. Just South of Pueblo.

Outstanding. I appreciated the help last year!!

i won't need actual donations until after Christmas break. I just wanted to put the bug in people's ear so they start thinking about it. As far as tax write offs, I have no idea. Any guidance on figuring that out would be appreciated.

Another thought: if anyone has some classroom activities that we could add this year, I'm open to ideas.

Examples last year: made a flag after studying symbology, casted wax bullets and loaded paper cartridges, etc.

An idea I'm working on is going out to the football field and recreating the British fire fields or capture the flag or something....

Teach em to fish? Proper knots, different reel and rod types, how to cast, lures, bobbers, etc?

Bear --

I have over a dozen bolt action .22 rifles we can use for this (mostly Winchester 52s and Mossberg 44USes) as well as cases of Aguila .22 LR. I won't use Remington Thunderbolt in my rifles anymore, had a really bad experience a few years ago. I can help with either RSO or instructor duties.

Current inventory is 200 rounds. We will need approx 200 per student, looking at around 40 students (won't know for sure until late Feb). 40x200= 8K

I can handle what you don't get from others. I did a couple bulk orders of Aguila from the CMP just in case we didn't get our ammo for summer camp.

Outstanding, please keep your eyes on this thread and I'll be getting volunteer info after the Christmas holidays have passed. Curious, what is the story with Rem Thunders?

I supported a district shootaree several years back. The district was using Remington Thunderbolt because they'd procured 7000 rounds cheap. In addition to the camp rifles, I took down my own collection of Winchesters, Mossbergs, and Kimbers. I had the bolt on one of the Mossbergs blow out -- curious since it was over 60 years old and had survived decades of military training but it WAS 60 years old so I put it on the rack and pressed on.

After the shoot, we were unable to clean the rifles normally -- I broke a cleaning rod trying to get a brush down the barrel. Later, we had a service project to tackle the cleaning; it took some vices and a lot of muscle but they were pushing out long thick chunks of lead. At first, I was going to blame the summer camp staff but then found they were pushing it out of rifles that had literally just come from the factory (we unboxed them at the shootaree!).

When I finally located a replacement bolt for the Mossberg (no easy feat), I took the rifle down to Hickman's and they had to use power tools to get the lead out of the barrel.

Since then, we've made it a council policy that only camp ammo -- or previously approved substitute of known quality -- gets used in the camp rifles. Federal and CCI are good, Aguila is clean but the Henrys seem to have a problem extracting the Aguila cases so we don't use it with them. Remington Thunderbolt is on the banned list -- for my rifles as well. If we use my rifles, we can use my ammo -- if you get other ammo donated and feel bad about using my ammo, I can take the other ammo in trade. I don't have a problem trading it off to others who are happy to use it and have other ammo or parts I can use but I just won't let Thunderbolt in any of my guns anymore.

Maybe this is a crazy thought, but could COAR15 make a collective donation and officially "sponsor" Project Appleseed? Might be a good way to get some good press with the community for our site. Maybe it's not appropriate, but it might be worth talking about. [Dunno]

Interesting idea, but you'll need to give me some more specifics... You just talking about a big banner we can hang on the berm for the TV interviews or....? I personally would LOVE to see as many people as possible there this year. PM/call/text/email/etc and chit chat if you'd like. I'm always open to ideas.

Honey Badger, still waiting on your ideas. There will be news crews etc there like last year so it could be good for the community, but I'd need some more details.

Also, everyone else: As the Christmas season comes upon us, please remember that I could use donations both in ammo (.22lr only) and in money to help pay for it all.

Thank ya, Merry CHRISTmas.

Sorry Bear, I really don't have any grand ideas. I was hoping one of the admins would chime in to endorse or deny. I was thinking that a bunch of forums members would help set up, help with safety, help with equipment, and generally help fund it and then we could maybe have a big "Colorado AR-15 Club" banner made to hang up. Try to get some good publicity for the club and forum.

BigBear
12-25-2014, 10:37
The more volunteers, the better, the safer, the more varied firearms the kids would be exposed too even though this is traditionally only a .22lr thing. Last year we did have a fellow bring out a AR and a M1.

BTW, MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone. If you find it in your heart to help out whether through your time or money or donations, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. Thank you.

Anyone who wishes to loan rifles, semi auto mag fed is best, please note, need sling and should remove bipod if equipped. The Appleseed folks usually have some extra slings available for those who do not have.

How much more ammo do you anticipate needing?

They like to have around 150 rnds per kiddo. About 35 kids. So, 35 x 150 = 5250. Probably round up to 5500 to be on the safe side. Last year we needed less rounds donated because me and another teacher were able to supplement some of our own, but that has obviously been depleted, AND we expect more kids this year too!!! Last year we had 30 kids? (Do you remember Buffalobo/other guys?) This year they will probably cap the class around 35-40, but there is always one or two who refuse the range day, so probably 35 kids will actually shoot out of the whole 40 class.

Also, we need financial donations as well. I suck at asking for money and have been hitting up some local places,... but I'm just not getting anywhere with 'em. Currently talking to Dragonman to see if he'd be willing to help sponsor or something, we can throw up a banner or mention his business in the news articles, or who knows? But it doesn't sound like he'll be interested either.

In case any of you still don't know what this is. Here's a link to Appleseed and what they are all about: http://appleseedinfo.org/

Last year was the first year (nationally) they were able to get into the public school and it was a RAVING success... so this year will hopefully be bigger and better.

Ok Ladies and Gents.... it's getting close to begging time...

On the ammo front we should be close to being ok (hopefully, if I can find a few more bulks).

On the volunteer front, we could really use a lot more people. If you're able to help out on March 18 from 8 am to around 3 pm down outside of Pueblo at a range, we could really use the help watching the kids and keeping things safe, etc. It would be a great time to meet each other as well. If we could have 1 adult per kid, that would be OUTSTANDING!!

Lastly, I hate this stuff, but we are waaaaaay behind on where I thought we could be for financial donations.... Anything would help, if you have the means and heart, we would greatly appreciate it to help out with gas costs, meals, etc from the folks who help put this on that travel from all over Colorado (and I think at least one out of stater)...

That is all, carry on!

A few other notes:

- I would still love to see more volunteers out! Even though we "should" have enough it always happens that something comes up and x can't make it.
- If you would let us use your .22lr rifle as well, we would appreciate it. Make sure it is marked with your name/contact info. (iron sights are all that is needed)
- Could still use more $$... I always feel like a hooker saying that....

****Businesses, if a business would like to donate and you have a banner of some sort, I can get a little advertising for you. We always have a news crew come out and we can set up your banner on the berm and make sure the news people get a few shots of it. Ammo: Secured if everyone donates as mentioned, however I won't turn away new donations. Please check the threads for your particular area. If you don't see one for your area, gimme a call/text/PM and we'll get something figured out. (THANK YOU BUFFALOBOB for helping with this!!!)

Volunteers: Had a few people that needed to step back for various reasons. Could use about 5 more volunteers. Please let me know if you'd be interested. This is a great way to hook the young ones early and help promote our history, passion, hobby, and lifestyle. The date is Wednesday, March 18, from around 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Avondale Clays and Gun Range. It will be a closed range, SAFETY first and foremost. You'll be helping guide kids, watching over them, calling shots, helping with rifles, etc. Safety, safety. Great way to develop a mentor-ship and leave a great impression with a young one even if it is one day. Also, last year at the end of the day, we usually let adults take a few shots showing the kids some bigger rifles, so... I'm bringing some Tannerite this year to end the day in a big boom. Should be fun for the kiddos.

Rifles/Mats: I neglected to start this from the beginning,... no excuses, I've just been swamped with my work and organizing this is... not easy and I forgot. HA! If you have a rifle/mat we would be able to use for the day, it would be greatly appreciated. We'll need about 15 rifles/mats more if possible. I'm planning on using some blankets as well. Just PM me or Buffalo if you'd be able to help out with that... Eventually to help with fundraising, I'd like to do a raffle and actually GIVE a kid a .22... but with the new laws, etc.... that's on the back burner. Maybe next year.

Money: ... I'm waay behind and am spending a lot of my dime when I can't really afford it. I don't mind, honestly, it's for the kiddos, but the wife does, HA! ... I don't make a lot. We are currently at $220 of the $2K I wanted to raise to help support this... Plainly stated: I could use some help.

Other items: If there are any questions, comments, etc. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. You guys rock!

Thanks,
Bear - Tim

BigBear -- I have your event on my calendar and am planning on supporting. NRA-certified as rifle instructor and CRSO although I prefer instruction to RSO.

As said in another thread, I have a number of target quality bolt-action .22s we can use for this including one with a scope zeroed for 100 yards -- but only have a couple mats. All of them have aperture rear sights, most of them have aperture front sights (some of the Mossbergs have front blades). The one catch is that I don't want just any ammo run through these. CCI or Federal are okay but I have plenty of Aguila ammo that we can use if that's an issue. I've already had one instance of having to replace a bolt due to Remington Thunderbolt ammo and it's hard to find parts for these.

Will try to give you an exact inventory and maybe even some pictures tonight.

Tim, I am taking the day off from work and I'm still planning on coming to help.

I have a plain jane Ruger 10/22 I can bring. It's obviously not bolt action, but let me know if you want me to bring it. Don't have any shooting mats.

Awesome, when Buffalobob picks up all the northern site ammo donations, we can run through them and I'll seperate CCI/Fed and put them to the side for your rifles only. That shouldn't be an issue. Sights shouldn't be a big concern either (app vs. blade/3 dot)... Biggest thing is sight picture, no matter what type of sights. We actually go over that for the kids during the pre-fire instruction.

HB, anything would be appreciated my friend. Doesn't matter if it's semi or bolt. Again, it's all about actual safety shooting, sight pic, etc. No one is going to yell because it's a semi and not a bolt.

Thank you.

Rgr, info will be coming out in about a week. It's the same place/time as last year. But I'll send out a mass once everything is rolling.

Thanks,
Tim

Hey Folks,
Just another quick bump!! The intensive is March 16-19 and coming up quickly!! Donations are still appreciated!

If you are planning on coming to the classroom portion: PM me and let me know so I can get your name on the list, etc. It's a LOT of fun!

If you are planning on helping watch the snot rags at the live fire event: PM me and give me a final "yay/nay" as you will not be allowed on range (whole range to ourselves) without name on list. Also a headsup, there is usually a News crew there as well. If you do NOT want to be on video, I need to know that. Thanks.

Who: A bunch of middle schoolers and adults!
What: Appleseed Project v2.0! (Introduction to Revolutionary War with Intro to firearms safety, basic marksmanship, etc)
When: Range day is Wednesday March 18th
Where: Avondale Clays and Gun Club (4960 44th Lane, Avondale, 81022)
Why: 'cause... 'Merica, that's why!

Also, I have 6lbs (6, 1/2lb targets) of Tannerite to end the day at the range for some Booms for the kids (no luck on getting a cannon), if anyone wants to bring a centerfire rifle, let me know caliber and I'll get thirty rounds or so. Still tossing ideas around on how to pick who gets to shoot them... thoughts? (Kids will just be excited to see it, so I'm thinking maybe the adults could have a little fun while Johnny watches.)

You have a donation headed your way via "crays", I would have let you know sooner, but due to the communications blackout during the " Moderators Super Secret Vegas Conference" the site was on lock down to prevent us finding out. I couldn't let you know...... Oops, I wasn't supposed to say anything about that........
