It could happen fellow nerds!

Fans have long been clamoring for an unaltered Blu-ray version of the original Star Wars trilogy without all the fancy special effects that were added in years later. If rumors are to be believed, this might actually happen. The first rumors surfaced on Comicbook.com (http://comicbook.com/blog/2014/08/16/exclusive-original-unaltered-cut-of-star-wars-trilogy-to-be-rele/) which said:

According to our sources, Disney has plans to release the original cut of the Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray. Our sources indicate that the project has been under way for quite some time, but it’s been challenging because of some damage to the original negatives they are utilizing. The goal is to release A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of Jedi in their complete, unaltered, original form without the redone special edition SFX.
Huzzah! But wait. As many have pointed out, the problem is that Disney doesn’t even own the rights to the original trilogy. The rights to those films all belong to Fox (along with the distribution rights to the prequels), so Disney can’t release anything on their own. The rights for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi revert to Lucasfilm in 2020, but A New Hope belongs to Fox forever.
Now, this doesn’t mean Disney and Fox couldn’t work together. After all, there is a lot of money to be made here. However, the fact that the rumor doesn’t seem to take Fox into account sheds doubt on its credibility. And let’s put one more nail in the coffin of this idea with a quote Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/05/could-disney-finally-give-us-the-remastered-unedited-star-wars-we-want/) dug up from George Lucas during an interview on The Today Show (http://www.today.com/id/6011380/ns/today-today_entertainment/t/lucas-talks-star-wars-trilogy-returns/) a decade ago:

The special edition, that’s the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. … I’m not going to spend the—we’re talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn’t really exist anymore. It’s like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I’m sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it.
And that was the sound of millions of fans cheering in joy only to be suddenly silenced. Still, a shred of hope is better than nothing.

All I want is the ORIGINAL UNALTERED (just THX) version, or, AKA, the BEST version. On blu ray.

The only good part about bastardized Ep IV = a bit more Boba Fett.

Eh, I moved on from Star Wars when Lucas kept showing regurgitated fecal matter. Much as I loved Star Wars in 1977 and 1978, Return of the Jedi was trite predictable garbage and everything that followed was a waste of acting talent and SFX that ruined the first two films for me. I would love to see Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back get the same 4K treatment when they restored The Godfather but I just can't see spending any money on it.

Star Wars? You flippin geeks. Damn fairy tale that Lucas stole from a Japanese story. No women, no guns, and no sex. Now Star Trek- you got sex, ground breaking plots (1st interracial kiss, birth control, euthanasia, race wars, religion), great Sci-Fi, O K Corral, firearms, Greek Gods, chemistry, drugs, and some fine looking honeys. Just sayin...

To be fair, The Magnificent Seven was stolen directly from Seven Samurai. Frankly, I think it improved on the original. On the other hand, most everything good in the Star Wars franchise was "borrowed" from other sources including some of the best visual scenes. Lucas' genius was in pulling it all together in a single visual epic which was frankly stunning and groundbreaking (for Hollywood) in a way that still holds together visually even without the Special Edition garbage.

I'm as much of a (original) Star Trek geek as anyone on this board but if you want truly epic SF storytelling, I'd go with Babylon 5 although Space: Above and Beyond tried very very hard and should have gone more than one season.

IMO, they should have always made the new edits an option and the theatrical releases a 'must have'.

Star Trek is just "Benevolent Commies in Space. "

Nope. Seen all 6 of those films( those last 4 really sucked). Lotta imaginary blasters and light sabers but nothing ...you can own today.

Blaster pistols were made from Broomhandle Mausers, the stormtrooper assault rifles were Sterlings. The guns in Star Wars are mostly based on real guns.

No, it's "Benevolent Fascists in Space."

I'll take Han's Broomhandled Mauser over Kirk's bamboo black powder contraption any day of the week.

I think a Broomhandle Mauser dressed up to look like a BlasTech DL44 would be cool as hell.
