View Full Version : Factory SBR - What would you buy?
I've been considering doing a form 1 on one of my lowers but I may just do a factory SBR instead. Do any of you have experience with the factory SBRs out there and advice on what you'd get and why. I know some think the 10.3" DD is too short but others like it; same for other factory SBRs. I went by Centennial a couple weeks ago and I believe they had 5 or 6 different SBR from different manufactures, some DI, some piston, etc.
Prices isn't the main issue so I'm curious what you'd get if you could have any of the factory SBRs. I have a Saker 5.56 can coming in for it as well.
On the same subject I know the general consensus is that you can swap other uppers as long as you don't permanently change the configuration (keep the original upper). What about having multiple short barrel uppers and only one registered SBR lower but several standard AR lowers. I've read that it should be OK as long as you don't store the non NFA lowers without 16" uppers but there doesn't seem to be much consensus on the proper way to deal with multiple short uppers. One guy on the other AR site said he has pistol lowers for each short upper when they're not in use on the SBR.
Thanks in advance.

1st was factory DPMS lower. Took forever, back then (12+) years ago. It was a pre-order, so they were offered, but not ready. Basic serial#, you'd never know it was a SBR by looking at it. I have 3 uppers for it. All on hand, only 1 sbr at the time. When I travelled all uppers were in same case as lower. No one from ATF to date had ever asked to inspect. Personally, if an agency wants you, you have problems bigger than an extra SBR upper.
As for factory vs. Form 1 Will you as individual, or trust be buying it? If it's trust, you still have to engrave your info on receiver. You want to wait X time frame for form 4 to be approved. Or F1 a lower you have on hand, by EFile, waiting , what 3 weeks to who knows how long.
Only you can answer that. Myself since it requires engraving for the trust F1 . Other reason F1, a competent person can buy the upper, trigger group and furniture of choice and have a quality AND cheaper than off the rack. $1200 for a SBR'd AK. My draco sbr cost $720 with stamp.

I have no reason to go with a factory SBR myself. Mine are all Form 1's.
There are lots of options, with different parameters, aesthetics, accuracy and reliability. That said, I would not venture to choose one for you. If I were to choose one for myself, I would likely go with a PWS.
I've got a DD factory SBR, and two form1. No real difference beyond what form it came on. I put the same things in both. I think the factory was cheaper than the form 1 all said and done

Thanks for the replies; this is one I hadn't heard before and may help make my decision. So if you buy a factory SBR with a trust do you have to wait for the Form 4 and then once approved and you have the lower send it off for engraving? Do you have to do a Form 1 for that piece (so technical two stamps for a factory SBR)?
The main reason I was looking at factory SBRs is that I didn't put much thought into naming my trust and it's 7 words long (over 30 characters) which seems like kind of a pain to have engraved.
Thanks again
No you do not have to engrave a factory SBR

So is Kazoo incorrect here or did I just misunderstand?
I'm confused by Jim all the time.

A SBR must be engraved with the manufacturer's name. On a F4, the original company is the mfg. and already engraved on there. On a F1, YOU are the mfg and have to engrave your name/trust on the lower.

Cool, so if I go factory I can avoid the long engraving of the name of my trust. I think that's worth the extra wait time for me.
Has anyone else had an overly long name engraved and was it easy to hide in the mag well or somewhere else?
My toy guy was experimenting with different locations for engraving.. The mag well was by far the easiest.

Many moons ago I bought a factory registered SBR lower. I would do it exactly the same again.

No you don't do 2 stamps, once the factory SBR is approved you're GTG. The Form 1 unit needs to be engraved, technically you're the mfg.

I went with a classic, the Colt 6933 (a.k.a. M-4 Commando). I held one, it was so light, compact and a Colt. It was a little bit of a fan boy moment, but I don’t regret it. [AR15]

I have a DD Factory 12.5". It hasn't gotten the range time it's deserved, but its been a stellar performer for a few thousand rounds.
