View Full Version : New member soon to be in Denver
Hey guys, I'm moving from Massachusetts to Denver in about two weeks. Definitely looking forward to living out there!
Looks like I've got a bit to read about CO new laws and such. It's gotta be easier than being behind the iron curtain in Commie-chusetts though... haha
I'm a very active user on the Northeastshooters forum, and have done a couple shooting competitions.
Anyway, just saying hi. You'll see me in the threads soon enough haha

Welcome!
Thanks guys! I've heard there's some sort of assault weapon ban for denver? Not sure if it was bad info or not...
I'm used to dealing with that in MA, but can someone direct me to what the CO laws are on that, specifically Denver?
Also, looks like there are some hoops to jump through for a CO concealed carry?
I used to live in Washington, and that was a "go to the county court house, get fingerprinted, fill out forms, wait 30 days and it's in the mail" for a CCW. ($60)
Massachusetts was "take a basic firearms class, fill out app, need two references, finger print, wait 6 months and hope for the best" for a LTC-A unrestricted. ($100)
From what i gathered so far, CO requires you to have a firearms class? I wonder if my MA class certificate counts...?
I understand the new mag law.(which needs to be overturned ASAP) I'm used to trying to find mags made pre sept 1994... haha
Thanks in advance

Yup,been here about 3 years now.Even with some of the crappy laws it still beats the northeast by far!!
CCW here is easier (and faster) than what you described in Mass.

"Assault weapons" are illegal in the city/county of Denver. Can travel through with them. If looking at other cities/counties you're good to go

Thanks for the info. Looks like i'll keep them in Washington until I move from Denver. And yeah, I hate the "assault weapon" tag for something that isn't select fire
When you say "Denver," do you know exactly where you are moving? Denver is a relatively small area in the metro area.

A block from Denver U
Yeah, that's likely Denver.
Yeah, that's likely Denver.
Haha yep... Sheit.
Oh well, I'm only planning on living at that location for a year max. Just to get me out there
Yeah, plus a lot of other places will be cheaper than that neighborhood. I don't want to give you bad advice, but since I live here, I'd just bring your stuff. The decision will ultimately be yours.

This isn't my first rodeo. I live in Massachusetts haha
I'll need to find a local club to get some trigger time in. There are only two public ranges in Massachusetts... The private one I belonged to, I let the membership lapse at the start of this year. I bet I'm rusty

Forcibly left CO in January, 2003 for incarceration in Bedford, MA (Active Duty USAF PCS).
Went on Terminal Leave as I retired from the Air Force and left MA to return to CO in June, 2005.
I may visit MA again very briefly, but I never again want to spend more than 5 consecutive days in that state. Brrrr. The thought gives me chills.

I moved here for a job straight out of college from Montana. Let's just say, after just over 3 years, it's time for a change haha

Montana to Massachusetts?
Oh man, you are long overdue for moving to CO. We've got some bad laws to over-turn, but it's a great state to live in. ...BUT, you will miss those amazing fall colors!

Welcome to the board!
Thanks guys!
I start my drive across the country on Sunday.
Have a safe trip.
We'll leave the light on for ya...[Coffee]
All in one trip? Like once you arrive, all your stuff will be here as well? Good luck. Don't speed through Iowa (if you go that way).

Packing up the biggest uhaul trailer and whatever doesn't fit is staying behind haha.
This will be my second cross country trip. The first was when I moved from Seattle to Massachusetts.
Perhaps i should sell my Glock 19 here before I leave. They go for $750 on a bad day, used. [ROFL1]

welcome
Thanks guys, got into town yesterday and moved everything in. Looking to hit the range soon. Suggestions around the Denver area? Or maybe a spot in the woods?
The Shootist on Santa Fe (?) isn't real far from you. They have poor ventilation but you can do mag dumps.
Centennial Gun Club on E Arapaho Rd is South and East of you. They are a new club and just expanded their place. Their range is pretty nice and I've shot there a few times testing reloads.
2nd Saturday of every month is IDPA in Dumont, CO. 4th Saturday of every month is IDPA at CRC (I want to say near Byers, CO, but it's not really NEAR to anything). There are plenty of other local matches of which I do not know the dates or locations as well. See you around. Welcome.
Did we ask if you've ever been here before? Or what made you decide to move here?

Thanks man, I appreciate the info.
My uncle used to live outside of Golden in the mountains, so I've been through few times when I was younger. I've got some college buddies in the area, so it's nice to meet up with friends I haven't seen in a couple years.
Honestly, I missed the mountains since I used to teach snowboarding. And since I'm originally from Seattle, I wanted something without 24/7 rain haha.
I want to get into IDPA at some point, but I'm not fully setup for it yet. Need a good holster and belt dedicated to that.
Are these ranges public? Or is it all private clubs. Washington was almost all public ranges, and Massachusetts was almost 99% private clubs
The ones I mentioned are public, and there are several more around the metro area. The ranges the IDPA matches are at are private, but anyone can show up for the matches.

Excellent. I'd definitely like to watch a couple matches. Only competitions I've done are bowling pin shoots on tables, and they were pretty casual. I'd run the shoots occasionally

Welcome!
Welcome aboard, the "Assault Weapons ban in CO ended in 2004 I believe. The only restrictions are the mag restrictions now.
