View Full Version : Anyone here build PCs?
Mod's please move if this is not a good location; I wanted to get the most visibly in the near term.
I'm looking for a new desktop and even though I've built many over the last 20 years I just don't have time to do the research at the moment. I'm looking for someone who is skilled and up to date on current technology that can build a custom desktop; primarily for photo/video editing but maybe some gaming.
No problem paying you for your expertise but I don't want to be gouged on hardware prices (if you pay $200 to order from newegg I want to be billed $200 plus your labor, not $300 and no labor). I'd rather pay someone a solid wage/fee than get charged 50% more for the hardware. I know it's just semantics but that's how I feel about it.
I'm looking high end, maybe in the 3-5K range; no need to worry about monitors; I'll supply those.
Hit up Mazin. He's been known. to do that sort of thing.
Besides, it gives you a reason to stop by Ark...

I was just there last month; didn't realize he did that as well. :) Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe not.Maybe still, depending on the desired games.
Apples are now pretty much all using Intel processors now, so that advantage is gone when working with graphics/photos/video. I don't know enough about the Apple OS to say if that gives any advantage, but in terms of gaming, Windows certainly has a huge advantage, if for no other reason than all the high end graphics cards are supported first and foremost for Windows.
Edit: I just completed a new machine for the shop: 8 core AMD processor at 3.5 Ghz, 8 gig ram, 256 SSD, mid range fanless graphics card with 1 Gb video memory. I'll be loading up Win 7 Pro tomorrow or Monday, but I expect it will feel pretty snappy for a work machine.
More software is coming in universal with Mac / win. I work on windows computers and own a Mac. Personally I would rather run a VM windows system then have it as a stand alone os but that's just me.
Get a Mac or build something like this http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4jrsVn
The hard drive, case and OS are place holders for what you like and trust. If your not going to do a lot gaming i would down grade on the video card but your budget allows for it so i throw it in.

Yup, that's what i usually do - OSX for the daily driver OS and Win7/8 VM for most stuff.
I do maintain some dedicated Win games machines for hardcore gaming, though, my beefiest one is currently an upgraded Mac Pro with just Win7 installed. It supports quad Radeon HD 6-series in crossfire-x mode quite nicely.

Have you guys seen the new Mac Pros????? My personal opinion is that is about as ugly as a computer can get. :)
I've got a 2011 and 2013 MBP and an 2013 iMac but I'd like a bit more flexibility. Plus I just don't like OSX, I tried to use it for work but couldn't come up with a good way to deal with email (I know it's a MS issue but it forced me back to Lenovo for work).
Also, I tried going the VM route with my work MBP but there were known battery issues with running Windows 7 in fusion on an MBP. Not sure if that has ever been resolved; I haven't booted my windows VM in about a year.
I run Workstation on my main computer and run Linux from there if there's something else I need to do.
