View Full Version : Where to buy a new gun safe?
I know there have been a few discussions somewhat recently but I wasn't able to find much advice.
Safe & Warm out of Buena Vista isn't really an option since the issue with Liberty. I spoke with him and while he still sells a few safes it's nothing like it used to be.
I've been to all of the big box retailers and others like Murdoch's but I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for; I want a good med size safe with a mechanical lock.
I'm leaning heavily towards an Amsec BF6636 and I'm wondering if anyone has ordered a safe online from any of their dealers. I'd prefer to go local but the quotes I'm getting are just too high (almost 40% higher than online with shipping). I know I'll have to hire someone to move it from the driveway into the house but I don't think that will be too expensive.
I also looked at Sturdy but since this will be in a somewhat visible area my wife wants something that looks a little nicer.

I had a fantastic experience with Wrangler Safe & Lock. They're at 1100 W Evans Ave in south Denver. (http://wranglersafeandlock.com) The owner's name is Mike, and he runs the place with his wife and son. I bought an AmSec BF from them and they were amazingly helpful. Mike and his son also do the delivery and install themselves, so you don't have to worry about a shady middleman. They were also cheaper than the other places I found in the Denver area. I would highly recommend them. Those AmSec BF-series are freaking tanks by the way, I absolutely love mine. Just realize that they are HEAVY and need a solid location for placement.
I've heard Tractor Supply has some sweet Black Friday deals, if you can wait that long.

Anyone have a recommend safe mover? I've seen some at the farm supply places for good deals but can't get it down the stairs or deliver it.
Thanks guys, I'll check out Secure Lock and Wrangler. The build time quote I received from the local dealer was 10 - 12 weeks so timing isn't a huge issue. Sooner would be much better but I'm willing to wait. The sticking points are quality for the price, size (I'd like to go taller than 60 and 36 is about as wide as I can go) and a mechanical lock. Seems like almost all of them are electronic now.

We used Hamblen's a couple years ago to move a fairly large safe to the basement, not super heavy ~1000 lbs but it was pretty big for the weight. They were good to deal with and got the job done. I don't have their number handy but it shouldn't be hard to find; I've seen their cards at most of the big box stores over the last few weeks.

I used them for the last safe I bought (fat boy 64). Went well.
Hamblen's ? The guys who used to be in Ft. Collins, on 14 just off of I-25?
I bought my safe from him back in the 90's, he has a special dolly that 'walks' the safe down stairs.
He had plenty of ballast to work the safe/dolly, and once on the floor a few golf balls underneath were all that was needed to get it in place.
Though my safe was ~1400 lbs., he knew how to work it.

Secure Lock & Safe (opie011) is your best resource, I would check with him first.
Englewood Lock & Safe sells AmSec. Nice people too.
Yeah don't bother with Hamblin the guy is a bait and switch artist and dickhead to boot. Stick with opie011 no experience but seems like a stand up guy and he is a member here.

I like the idea of using someone on the forum but can you provide some details on your issue with Hamblen? They delivered my safe for the quoted price even though they misjudged the difficulty (decided to go around the walkout rather than down the stairs). This was about 5 years ago so things could have changed.
+1 for englewood lock and key that's where I got my safe from.

opie011 sold me and delivered my 3500 lb safe, and placed it in perfect position like he'd done it 1000 times before. Oh wait, he HAS. Call him.

theres safe trader on the north end of the springs. long drive, but decent prices.
Yeah I bought a safe had him deliver told him I wanted to go down the stairs. Spent money to reinforce the stairs measured the clearances and double checked with him prior delivery and he said no problem he shows up and changes his story when he gets the safe in the house and charges basically the same amount and didn't take it down the stairs but offered to slide it down the stairs but don't call him to get it out of the basement. The guy is real class act. Avoid this clown and his bait switch BS.

just about 2 months ago I called Hamblen. He came the day after I called, they were here less than a half hour. He came to my house, pulled a 1200 pound safe out of the basement with no issues (in less than 5 minutes). Everything went perfect, for the exact money he quoted on the phone.
Cliff or Rex Hamblen-- 970 217 3520
if you search many people on this forum have used him with success, as with ar15.com, snipershide, many locals with no issues. he has been doing it since alot of you were still wearing justin bieber underroos.

I'll step in as miss manners with a link: TheSafeTrader (http://thesafetrader.com/)
I bought my first safe from Hamblin maybe 20 years ago when they had a booth at the stock show. Absolutely beautiful National Security -- automobile-quality paint, still operates as smooth as silk, etc. NS no longer exists, but BMU Liberty bought them and has a National Security line (http://www.libertysafe.com/safe-national-safes-ps-3.html) that appears [loaded word] to be of the same quality.
I bought a second, let's call it "utilitarian" Champion Triumph-30 (http://www.championsafe.com/products_triumph.html) safe from the Safe Trader about a year ago. Looks like they no longer carry Champion safes, however...
When it comes to the Champion, let's just say the National Security spoiled me...

I thought I'd leave this 'fun' story I ran across while researching - http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=621436
This isn't a dig on any particular brand, I don't think anything below a TL rated safe would have stood up to this. I am amazed at how clean the cuts are.

any safe brand that is not UL rated as a safe is probably crap. when they mention gauge of steel, that is a clue its going to be crap. now when they start saying 3/16" or 3/8" or bigger then its something to look at. I am making a broad statement that all RSC (residential security containers) are crap.
I have the largest Liberty (size wise) and its junk. I could be into it in probably less than 2 minutes with a battery powered circular saw, sawzall or drill. They make these huge claims that the relockers are so awesome, all the 16 bolts are so awesome...but you could cut through the top, back, sides in seconds.
I am looking for a TL30 or maybe a TL15 safe right now. They used to be cheap and plentiful on craigslist. But, with all the mar ju ana sales, they are more expensive. I need to sell my liberty to buy one though. Its a good looking safe, its just not enough safe for me.
Amsec makes a TL30X6 now but they still mention their 12ga and 11ga steel in it. :)
I'd love to get the 64X34 but I don't think my floor would support the 3500 lbs and list is almost $11K.

That my friend is a sign, you need to build a nice garage.

Thanks for the recommendation; great family and GREAT prices. They actually have more safes in stock than Cabala's and Gander combined (at least it seemed like it). We can't wait for the new BF.

Updated . I was kindly informed O2Hen2 has access to helicopters. Could make it interesting. Honey is that a flight for life over our house. Not sure but the roof to the shop is missing [panic]
If I was to get a TL safe I would go with Brown safe company.
I'd like to see that safe....

Browns are nice! First time I'd seen this rating.

New BF6636 installed this week, nothing but good things to say about Wrangler and AMSEC. sic_semper_tyrannis should be getting a finders fee! :) If not from them, then I owe you a case of beer, or a bottle of whisky or at the very least some vegan bread (not sure what you're into).

Just looked at this, looks awesome I wonder how it does when it comes to a cutting torch. My next safe will be a Brown.
^^^ really nice Amsec safe! What lighting system/brand did you use, may have to upgrade mine.

Whats the best deal out there for a safe around $1500. Ive got a few hundred set aside for the move also. Storage space is what I am going for, also need it to fit down the stairs.
PM opie011, I'm sure he can help you out.

I'll get my next safe from Opie11. More space, less money, and almost the same heat protection as my Champion (Triumph). Also, he moved mine with extreme care and respect, reliable and trustworthy.
Looks like this is their light kit; it is very bright. I haven't done any price shopping yet, this was the first that popped up.
