Bill Gates and his wife give $1 million to gun control push (http://money.cnn.com/2014/08/26/technology/gates-gun-control/index.html)

Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda have together donated $1 million to the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility, a gun control advocacy group, according to its most recent financial report with Washington State.

The contributions by the couple, who are now full-time philanthropists running the foundation bearing their names, are only the most recent big dollar donations from billionaires who made their fortunes from the software company.

Previously, Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) co-founder Paul Allen gave $500,000 to the group, while recently retired Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave $250,000 and his wife Connie contributed $330,000.

It's not just Microsoft billionaires throwing big bucks at the gun control campaign. Tech venture capitalist Nick Hanauer contributed an additional $1 million, according to the filing, on top of his earlier contributions of $335,000.

All of them are billionaires who can easily afford the six- and seven-figure donations. Gates is the richest man in the world according to Forbes, with an estimated fortune worth $76 billion. Ballmer just paid a record $2 billion to buy the Los Angeles Clippers.

But the contributions by the tech billionaires make up a significant portion of the war chest the group has raised so far. It's most recent report shows total contributions of $5.8 million.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gives away billions of dollars a year to generally less controversial recipients such as groups working to expand childhood immunization, combat poverty and hunger in the third world, and helping the poor to attend college.

Gates himself makes relatively modest, and balanced, political contributions. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, he has given $15,000 each this year to both the Democratic and Republican committees seeking to elect members of the House and Senate.

The Alliance is backing a ballot measure in the state this November that would require background checks for all gun purchases in the state, including those made at gun shows and online. The measure is opposed by a local group known as Protect Our Gun Rights, which has raised $1.1 million and has its own measure on the ballot to try to block background checks.
C'mon, Bill. Stick to your humanitarian aid and leave our rights alone.

How much money would Bill and Melinda have to give you to sign away any of your rights under the Constitution?

What they does with their money is their business. My rights aren't given to me by the government and they aren't for sale.

ZERO THEORY

I feel the same way about this as I do about Levi's jeans. I use their products and I shit on their ideology. Part of my allegiance to absolute American freedom is leaving alone Bill's birth right to say, believe, and be a part of whatever the hell he wants. I don't play the my-way-or-the-highway game that most liberals do. That said, I think his opinion sucks, and it's my right to say fuck it. As long as Windows 7 works, I'll keep using it. And if Bill doesn't like me shooting paper, criminals, elk, or tannerite, he can shove his opinion up the 5 hole.

Awesome post.

You can't fault someone for trying to create what he or she believes is a better world.

However,

You can fault someone for going against the very system that allowed them to become what they have become. Captain Obama said something along the lines of 'you didn't build that' at one point. And he was right. And also very wrong.

Those of us who are citizens have certain opportunities available to us that others who aren't born of this country simply do not have. I don't take them for granted. And because I don't take them for granted, I don't need someone telling me that what I have created for my life doesn't belong to me. I am aware of the opportunities I have been afforded and I work within those opportunities to better my life and the life of my family... and I will defend those opportunities if they are challenged.

But I will not - not now or not ever - try to change the fabric of this country that has afforded me so much. I fully realize that the sweat and blood of others before me, under the same flag that I honor, have made the life that I have possible. I think Bill Gates may have forgotten that. Or perhaps he believes he is smarter than our founders and believes he can make improvements on the very system that made him what he is.

One of the greatest poisons of success is the belief that one's accomplishments are entirely their own. They are for the most part: as an individual working hard within the system they're born unto. But we should never forget the sacrifices that allowed us to be who we are and pursue what we might.

Firearms and the right to own and possess them are a part of a system all of us (as well as Bill Gates) were born into. I haven't forgotten that. And I believe that the only way I could forget that is if my own desire and ability to further change the world was impeded by anyone who said:

"I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery" -Thomas Jefferson

Tom was more intelligent than you, Bill. Get over it.

Sometimes you just can't get away from supporting these types of people, even indirectly. It sucks, but that's life. I may not have the platform or money he does but I can still counteract what he says with regards to influencing people's opinions about guns. I'll do what I can and when my voice is combined with millions of others through organizations like the NRA, his voice isn't quite so loud anymore.

And, Bill...you should spend that money working on an OS that works better for the average computer user than Windows 8. It sucks.

Meh, have never had any use for Bill Gates. He got where he did by hoodwinking IBM and lying to Apple, also by some very underhanded shenanigans in the way he was playing off Windows and Office dependencies to cripple competitors in either arena. His competitors could have fielded (in many cases DID field) better products that would have doomed the Windows environment if they had just worked together -- desktop and laptop PCs would be in an entirely different world if Digital, Lotus, WordPerfect, etc. had worked together on a collaborative integrated product suite -- or if IBM, Corel, etc. had taken some initiative and integrated their products as OS/2 was a better Windows than Windows after version 3.

Crap, I was just going tomorrow to check out the 10.1" TW100 WinBook tablet for work. Seemed like a nice set up with 32gb flash, 2gb memory and Intel quad core processor all for $200. I guess I'll just get a Samsung and reward the South Koreans, at least they are not trying to take constitutional freedoms from the people that made them rich.

This is the truth. No one is ever truly anti gun, they want someone to have the guns to protect them and their family. But they can't stand the idea of having "non professionals" having them.

Run the Linux OS! Has Chrome and Firefox and you can access Google apps for spreadsheets or word docs. The Ubuntu distro seems the easiest for most people I know to install and use. You don't see ads for Linux because there is no charge for Linux as far as a license fee. Been running Linux for years. Lately just Mac and Linux and have shut off my Windows boxes altogether.

I still run a M$ box for work compatibility, however, my current laptop is running CrunchBang or #! for the more nerdy in the group. I have an older PowerBook G4 running 10.5.8 Leopard and it still provides adequate service. One of the nicest parts of linux is the easy ability to run from a live CD or USB drive.
