So episode 2 just finished. What have you guys though thus far?
First: Personally I was skeptical about the writing (Moffat was out of control season 6 and 7) until I saw episode 1. Capaldi Nailed it. First time I didn't have the "new doctor" Anxiety. He's so dark, and not like the last couple we had. I think he pushed the droid out.
Second: Who is Missy? I think it's Clara from the future, or one of her echoes that has gone insane.
Overall I'm impressed so far.

So far I've been pleased with Capaldi (but its only been two episodes). I never warmed up to Matt Smith so I'm glad to see the change. I do wish the Doctor would grow out of his 1960s-1970s anti military BS (and actually I think this episode was critical of the Doctor for it so that could be a sign of improvement).
My interest is really piqued by Missy ... not sure if she has anything to do with Clara or not but it'll be interesting to see where they go with her.
I also wonder if they're going to somehow tie his choice of appearance to Lucius Caecilius Iucundus (whom Capaldi played in the David Tenant episode that took place in Pompeii) and the character he played in Torchwood.
I do think the exterior of the Season 8 Tardis looks plastic.
Are you guys referring to season 8 of the newest version of this show? If one wanted to start watching, where would you suggest? I saw a few of the original Dr. Who episodes on Netflix, but do I really need to start all the way back in the 1960's?
If you wanted to jump in, I'd start with the 2005 'reboot'.
SPOILERS
I liked the first episode better than the second episode for Season 8. I'm getting really sick of Clara very quickly; I certainly did not appreciate the anti-military snark that was a subtext of the show. I'm sure there will be some reflection in the show later on. It just makes no sense to me, as the 50th anniversary rebooted the war. Why then, the anti-soldier mentality?
I do like the darker direction he's taking; there's a lot of salt needed to counteract the saccharin that Matt Smith left behind.

Yes season 8 of the new show. Starting from the beginning is not necessary, a lot are not on netflix and a lot have been lost to history. I would suggest starting from the new show. Most people refer to the old as "Classic Doctor Who" while the new is just Doctor Who.
Every new season more or less explains what is happening at the beginning. Suggesting a starting point is hard for me. Honestly, while I do enjoy some of the older ones, some are a bit too dry for my taste. And the new ones might appeal more to our taste in TV. The show changed drastically when it was rebooted in 2005. Here are my suggestions:
From the New Series 2005 on...
To get hooked. Episode 1 season 5 "The Eleventh hour" I'll catch hell for recommending a Matt Smith doctor here, but I think the episode is a bit funny, and shows that the doctor is kind of a badass.
To get some history: Episode 1 Season 1 "Rose" Be advise the first series of the "new" Who had some terrible acting and writing, almost cheesy but cheesy to the point it's good.
To see the Doctor as a badass: Waters of Mars Season 4 Episode 17. One of my favorites.
Most of the "Classic" Doctor Who I like is not on Netflix, but if you're curious try season 3 Spearhead From Space. It's on Netflix
So start at the reboot that launched in 2005. Thanks.

i think this doctor is the sub conscious of all the doctors. dealing with the time lords on trenzalore. now knowing there's a part of galifry out there. Possibly going back to the silence. I wonder if he's going to go darker than before.
Myself always been a fan of Devros' https://sp3.yimg.com/ib/th?id=HN.607990635778738279&pid=15.1&P=0 EXTERMINATE , KILL THE DOCTOR ! ! ! !
Till the scariest of them all were introduced.http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMzk4NDQ3NDQzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzIzNzEzMjE@._ V1_SY317_CR104,0,214,317_AL_.jpg what ever you do don't BLINK
For you folks ( kids) who never watched the older Dr. Who's. The Tom Baker version figured out a way to stop the dalects, any guesses?
Just start at the beginning of any season. Each season will have an over arching story line and all of the episodes will play a part of that seasons story line. Each Doctor is different and each companion is as well. Everyone who watches the show has opinions about the writing, the acting, the production values. The only opinion that matters will be yours.
It is British (or Welsh for the reboot). They hate guns over there. No surprise the Doctor doesn't like guns, even if he is a Time Lord [Flower]

If you want to watch Season 8 you either need to have BBC America or do like I do and download the torrents. Netflix has the entire 2005 reboot up to the end of Season 7. If you want to jump in at the current season, I'd suggest you watch the last couple episodes of Season 7.
Regardless of where you start, if you have questions there's an entire Dr Who Wiki where you can look stuff up: http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Who_Wiki
Not to worry, I don't start things from the middle. Except donuts.

then start with chris eccleston 2005. There is an arc regarding rose tyler, mickey, and her mum from his dr who role, over to tennants role. Plus it will make more sense, as The Face of BO, Captain Jack Harkness makes appearances throughout those 2 doctors. I think you could probably jump in at any new doctor starts. For us, watching if from 2005 ties a few minor items up / makes sense as the series progresses. Like STRAX, the clone Sontaran , River Song, Rory The Roman Centurion ;) etc.
Make it more confusing, Jack Harkness becomes a spin off called TORCHWOOD.
ANSWER TO TOM BAKER Dr Who. How does he stop the dalects? As they are moving through an area he notices a distinct ozone like smell. He figures they run on an electrical current, SO... as an experiment, he throws a towel , carpet under one as it passes. Turns out that action prevents the dalect from moving.

I wouldn't consider starting with the 2005 show "starting in the middle". It really is a different show from the earlier one. The best parallel I could come up with is 1960s Star Trek vs Star Trek: The Next Generation. You could easily start up TNG and never have seen any of the original series and still be fine.
Peter Davison > all the other doctors combined.
I'm not saying 2005 is the middle Zund. But you suggested specific episodes, mid season to watch. I don't do that. I start at the beginning.

Peter Davison > all the other doctors combined.
Bah! Best "old series" Doctor is Tom Baker ... best new doctor is David Tennant (who ironically is married to Peter Davison's daughter).
Back in the old days when us Yanks watched Dr Who re-runs on PBS, the switch from Tom Baker to Peter Davison almost killed the show for me (of course by the time Davison left and was replaced with ANOTHER guy named Baker we all loved him ... and Colin Baker really sucked).

Correct / Agree, 05 is the start of the new doctors, Chris Eccelston gets Rose as a companion, when he changes Rose is still around. He can watch the old ones, and probably wonder why they were using a plunger as a weapon on the dalects.
The new first series of British (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_television) science fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction_on_television) programme Doctor Who (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who) began on 26 March 2005 with the episode "Rose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_%28Doctor_Who%29)", which marked the end of the programme's 16-year absence from episodic television following its cancellation in 1989, and the first new televised Doctor Who story since the broadcast of the TV movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_%28film%29) starring Paul McGann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_McGann) in 1996. The finale episode, "The Parting of the Ways (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Parting_of_the_Ways)", was broadcast on 18 June 2005. The show was revived by longtime Doctor Who fan Russell T Davies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_T_Davies), who had been lobbying the BBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC) since the late 90s to bring the show back. The first series comprised 13 episodes, eight of which Davies wrote. Davies, Julie Gardner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julie_Gardner) and Mal Young (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mal_Young) served as executive producers, Phil Collinson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Collinson) as producer.

Peter Davidson excelled as Tristan, in All Creatures Great and Small. Another BBC / PBS show that would never make it past episode 3, if that on commercial telly.

I still contend that "Don't Blink" is one of the greatest single episodes of any TV sci-fi show.

Yep. It's the first one with the statues ... I found the use of them in later episodes to be kinda silly, but the original one is just excellent.
"Blink" is the episode I suggest to people that have never seen Doctor Who. :) It's excellent.

They show up in The Silence episode, with Matt Smith. The crack / silence draws them in to the dead Forrest. There's a lot of good, then a lot of really good episodes within the entire series. We're fond of the River Song story line, from her breaking out of prison, etc.Same with Capt. Jack.

My biggest complaint with the first new episode was with the sound. I had a hard time understanding the Doctor on our living room tv, I switched to the home theater with 5.1 and the center channel cleared things up. I saw other people complaining about the same thing, I think it is a combination of accent and sound recording.
I'm liking the new Doctor and the darker vibe.
